Musselman. 910m 2555 r135ai2 . . . My best wishes and congratulations to those students, faculty members, and friends of the college who have made this pioneer yearbook of Harford Junior College possible. My especial praises for those first students who entered as full time students Sept- ember 11, 1957, remained in good standing as full-time students for two years, and are graduating with the Associates in Arts Degree this June. During these first two years of Harford Countyhs Junior College, the students, faculty and friends have worked together to accomplish much. These first students have been a precedent setting group of pioneers. With the help of the community, a firm foundation has been established on which future classes may build. We can be proud together of our accomplishments thus far, and continue to work together to build a better college. Foreworcl h Out college mascot, the Owl, represents wisdom and knowledge, qualities all students hope to acquire. We sincerely hope that the students who graduate from Harford Junior College this year will continue to add to their store of wisdom and knowledge and use it ef- fectively in all walks of life. The Standard Equipment Company awards a full-tuition schol- arship to residents of Hatford County who plan to enroll in the Business Admin- istration Curriculum. Donald Thompson was the first winner of this scholarship. The Bel Air Rotary Club sponsors two full-tuition scholarships which are available to Harford County residents. Patricia Brown and Margaret Ritchie ate the recipients of these scholarships for this year. Also available are a limited number of scholarships awarded by the Harford County Parent-Teachet's As- sociation to students enrolled in the Teacher Education Curriculum. Two scholarships, covering one-half of the tuition charges, are awarded by the Hatford County Teachers Association to residents of Harford County who are enrolled in the Teacher Education Curriculum. Current holders of these scholarships are Ruth Brown and William Pfingsten. HARFORD JUNIOR COLLEGE REGISTRATION Mrs. Betty Sagi, Librarian, registering incoming students The Cecil County Board of Education is paying the difference between resident and non-tesident tuition fees for graduates of Cecil County Schools. This action has been highly praised by the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. Residents of Cecil County now have an equal opportunity with residents of Hatford County to acquire further education at an inexpensive rate. Dr. Charles W. Willis, Superintendent of Schools of Harford County, which includes Harford Junior College, was chosen by the Department of State as one of twenty American school administrators to participate in a seminar in Comparative Education. The Seminar was held during the months of Febru- ary and March, in France, Belgium, and the Nether- lands. Dr. Willis was one of more than 500 appli- cants for the scholarship, from which the twenty grantees were finally selected. His selection re- flects not only his statute as an educator onthe American scene, but it is also to be construed as an honor to the county system of which he has been Superintendent for the past fourteen years. Musselman opens the Convocation Dr. John H. Fischer, Superintendent of Public Exercises Instruction for Baltimore City gonuoaafion The Second Annual Convocation of Hatford Junior College took place on No- vember 10, 1958, in the Bel Air High School Auditorium. The processional and recessional music was played by Miss Sandra Hines; the Bel Air High School Glee Club rendered musical selections under the direction of Miss Reba Snader. The Reverend William P. Walker, minister of the Mountain Christian Church, pro- nounced the invocation and the benediction. Flowers for the stage decorations were furnished by Richardson's Florist Shop. Following the Convocation a te- ception was held in the cafeteria where delicious refreshments were served by the wives of the faculty members, and an art exhibit was on display. Dr. Musselman gave the introduction to the Convocation exercises, announced the scholastic winners,- and then stated the goals of Harford Junior College. The Dean then introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Dr. John H. Fischer, Superinteniient of Public Instruction for Baltimore City. Dr. Fischer gave an impressive talk reminding each of us that our mental ability is the most important source of power that we have. He discussed our potential ability to use this mental power for a better understanding of all man- kind in the never ending efforts to achieve a world free of prejudice, inconsider- ation, and misunderstanding. The most important aspect of his talk was directed toward personal soul-searching and the acceptance of acquiring an education as the responsibility of each individual. It is only by each individual accepting the challenge of education as A Personal Matter and striving to improve himself that the world will also be improved. 18 Organizations Sophomore Officers: Everett Cook, President; Donald Thompson, Vice-President; Margie Edwards, Secretary; Carole Moulsdale, Treasurer. Under the very capable direction of head-coach, Mr. William Capallo, H.J.C. joined the Tri-State Conference with some of the biggest junior colleges in the state participating. The Owls played twelve games, ending the season with a tournament at Hagerstown, Maryland. As the first few practices moved along, the team could see the difference between college and high school basketball. After the first few weeks of practice sessions at night, the boys in their new uniforms, were ready to meet their first opponent, Essex Community College. At the end of the first semester the Owls had a 5 and 2 record. Dale Bunnet received much attention for being one of the top ten conference players in points scored per game. He was backed by his teammates; Eddie Utz, who showed exceptional ball handling ability as well as scoring ability; Bud Chilcoat, a fine backcourt man; and Jim Foley and Walt Anthony who con- trolled the backboards for the Owls. Other members of the team included; Ralph Lawrence, Charles Beale, George Buck, David Amoss, David Daniels, LeRoy Scarborough, Neil Stemler, Donald Thompson, Ronald North, and the very capable team manager, Thomas Heintz. During the second semester, the most noted change in the team was the addition of Henry Helton. On F ebruary 20, the Owls opened the Tri-State Tournament against Patomac State at Hagers- town. Hatford lost in an overtime period. H.J.C. makes another set shot. Harford takes a foul shot Against Essex. LIVEZEY LUMBER COMPANY, INC.
