A1 9 xx, ,. .L Harding Students Broaden Skills Through Academic Involvement The skills so vital to acquiring a good education come a little easier to Harding students. The students of H.H.S. find greater opportunities for academic involvement, now, thanks to innovative faculty members. Many of these faculty members are using the independent study plan. Through its use, we find greater time for work on term papers, research reports, and group projects. Other teachers are finding success in class-wide projects. The senior government classes have begun mock legislative programs with one class playing the role of the Sen- - ' 4 ate while another plays the role of the House. Other classes actively take part in city government and report their findings in class. One junior his- tory class has become foster parents to an Indian child, while still another collects food for local needy families. Other classes are also becoming relevant, exploring such issues as envi- ronmental pollution, drugs, and rock poetry. Besides classroom activities there are chances for academic in- volvement in student government of the classes and student council. Y .,.4nl,. Within the school are the many clubs and organizations that give greater involvement in school functions. These clubs provide the extra bit of interest needed to be conducive to an educational atmosphere. Besides the clubs that focus on inter-club activi- ties, there are the groups like the Re- porter or Props and Que's that help to add some enjoyment for everyone. The Quiver and the Herold provides a record of the year,s happenings while Projectionists and librarians improve K.. 8 the techniques used in the classrooms. Outside the clubs many other activi- ties occur through the year. Last year saw visits by Bob jones, President of Bob jones University, Dr. Martin Luther King Sr., the rock group, Dust, and an assembly from the Atomic Energy Commission. Besides these examples, each year finds fine con- certs from the Harding music depart- ment, displays of fine sportsmanship from the athletic department and three dramatic productions. All of this, and more, give Harding students needed relief from classroom monotony. f ...,,.- SQQYK4 ,J ,,,,. Q , 9 N M if 1 . Q . f fx! The publicity committee drew posters and ran daily announcements, while the make-up committee dressed the actors for their perspective roles. Ev- ery sound effect and lighting scheme had to be properly carried through and that job was handled by the stage crew. The ticket committee was given the job of printing the tickets and sub- sequently selling them for the near sell-outs both nights of the musical. Each prop on the stage and used in the production had to be in the proper place at the proper time, which was aptly carried through by the proper- ties committee. Finally, the assistants to the director helped keep all of these functions together. Stage crew was in charge of curtain calling, lights and sound effects. A Sounds of jazz Come Alive in Talented Horns of Stardusters Once again the Stardusters' horns, drums, and assorted musical talents gave many enjoyable listening hours to enthusiastic audiences. Playing the sounds of the big-band era and up- beatingu their performance with re- cent numbers, the band gave shows for several city schools and other crowds. Director of the Stardusters was again Ed Miller. This year Keith Swihart assisted Mr. Miller on the band's productions. Combined with the main numbers of the group were the several individual acts by musical- ly talented Harding students. Cary Boggs, Ted Wilson, Harry Biffle, and Mike McGraw teamed up to form a 5 r F - r sl IW 4 9: . l 1 ' iff, V, M i .,i.! ' il sg 1 ii i : O n ,A f ix, I barbershop quartet complete with kazoos. Another group with increasing popularity in the Harding community, the Bob Floyd Trio, presented several numbers. The trio consists of Bob Floyd, on piano, Bob Briehoupt, on percussion, and Bruce Burton on gui- tar. All members were sophomores. With the Senior members of the group being lost to graduation, many of the apprenticed underclassmen will be- come the meat of the group and prom- ise to give more excellent perform- ances to the school. iF.,5,,,I. Each committee was responsible for a certain part of the responsibilities. Set construction sat up, repaired, and dismantled the stage made to look like the late l900is era. The stage crew ascertained that all props were in their proper positions and the curtain raisings, sound effects and lighting schemes were carried through at the correct times. Without the work of the property committee the set properties would not have been available and had not the make- up committee worked so hard the au- thenticism of characterism would have been lost. Finally the usherettes, ticket committee and publicity com- mittee assured those viewing the play of good seating and knowledge of play times and dates. Naturally the actual acting end of the production was perhaps the most important part of the production. Mr. Webb managed well to fit the right people into the right parts. The club was underqthe lead- ership of Mr. McKinley. Several field trips were made during the year. Some of the places the Seminar visited were the Marion Health Clinic, Ohio State University's mental rehabilita- tion center, Marion Water Treatment Plant, Smith Clinic, Air Traffic Con- trol Tower at Oberlin, and Fulfillment Corporation. The group also enjoyed lectures on Archeology, Apollo Pro- gram, and Astronomy. Science Fair projects played an important part in the seminar study. Each student pre- sented his project at one of the meet- ings, answering questions from the group, and receiving suggestions for his project. 50 The Debate Club completed a very successful year under the leadership of Mr. Webb, the advisor and Chair- man Dave Sifrith. The secretary was Mitsi Mash. Debating the pros and cons of the resolution, the role of the federal government in pollution con- trol. The Debate Club participated in Competition in the District in Colum- bus. It also held debates with Pleas- ant, and Marion Catholic and demon- strated an interclub debate for the Republican Club. With each debate, the members gained valuable experi- ence in learning to think fast, argue logically, and speak fluently. The purpose of the Harding Debate Club is to develop mental and organization- al spontaneity, as well as to further the participants' experience in group address. 5 I - '. of - ' y 3' Q l Hill UF WEE 1 . Virginia Alexander and Mrs. joAnn Radwin led the French and Spanish Clubs, respectively, to new areas of awareness in their two for- eign cultures. French club was honored by being chosen to present a skit at the Central Ohio Teachers Association annual meeting in Columbus during October. Carolyn Courtright and other French club members managed to portray importance of French curriculum in high schools through the use of a three act puppetplay. The play had been performed the previous year in French club. Running somewhere along the lines of a Punch and Judy show, the play was entirely in French. Later in the year, French club held several small French dinners in the inna--- members homes, culminating in a large year end feast at Mrs. Alexan- ders home. Spanish club held several new pro- jects as fine examples of what foreign language clubs can accomplish. With the hope of sending future Spanish class on a cultural trip to a Spanish speaking country, the students began undertaking projects to meet that goal. The projects ranged from win- dow washing to a Spanish Fiesta held in the Harding lunchroom. The Fiesta was first for Harding and featured Spanish and Mexican food, boutique items, raffles, and culminated with Spanish music and the grand Bull- fightm. Tim Sweeny assumed the role of torrero, with Fred White, Kathy Roke, and Bill Ferral in the cast. TT Q is j I l. The 6-4 records was good enough for a fifth place finish among Buckeye Conference foes. In some of the year's highlights, many of the games gave the fans lots of thrill and excitement. In the sev- enth game of the year Elyriais Pi- oneers' ranked third in the state, beat the Prexies by only a 10-0 score. The final thrill of the year came in the fi- nal game against Findlay's Trojans. In that game the Prexies crushed Find- Iayis hopes of a conference champion- ship by crushing them 24-6. Rick Huddle and Greg Brokaw both won first team All-Conference honors after piling up more than 1,000 yards on the ground. Second team honors went to linebackers Al Beach and Dwight Hoffman. Quarterback Frank Gifford, fullback Roger Chase, tackle Alan Mitchell, defensive backs jim Whelan, Mark Croll, and Dan Gorenflo, and defensive guard John johnson received honorable mentions. The reserve squad closed their sea- son with a 4-4 mark. They met Mt. Vernon, losing 24-6, in the final game. In the tournament action the Prexies were again eliminated by a team from Lima, Lima Shawnee. Offensively, the Prexies Averaged 62.5 points per game, while the oppo- nents averaged 63.5 points per game. The Prexies shot at a 4079 clip from the field and 6823 from the foul line. Shaffer lead in assists with 114, as Owens lead the scoring with 263 points, followed closely by Roads with 257 points for the year. The Vice-Presidents kead the Buck- eye Conference forthe second year in a row, coached by Greg Swepston. The title was cinched when the Vice- Presidents, with an 11-l record, beat the Findlay Explorers at the home court. The dress code was liberalized by includ- ing slacks for girls and no socks for boys in warm weather. During the summer, the back parking lot was lengthened to accommodate more cars for the growing number of stu- dents driving to school. In late fall, the construction of a new gym, in ad- dition to the old, was completed and is now serving the school with more adequate physical education facilities. Also, for the first time in many years, the seniors are required to take phys. ed. for a full year. Curriculum-wise, the faculty and administrators began a program to evaluate the school's edu- cation process through the North Cen- tral Association of Colleges and Sec- ondary Schools. Exam values were cut to represent only one-seventh of stu- dents' grades as a search for fairer means of using exams. Class schedul- ing in the future will now be done by computer process, as a quicker, more efficient means of scheduling classes. 5 s - . 7.4 - 5115! ,e l f Dr. David Miller Assistant to the Superintendent Marion Shank J0hl'l Steward Principal Assistant Principal 4' , 1 Q 'W 1 K uipJ' r ' ff Grace Schlientz Herbert Tillet Richard Rees james Drake Mary Rowley Shirley Phillips Beverly Marshall Cindy Winters 91 -ml. if, Virginia Alexander Mary Cree Calhoun Joyce Creager Mary Drake Alice Calloway Maxine Creen jerry Hall Patricia Kaiser Clover Mae Linscott fi ' Language Studies Bring Rewards Bright new insights into different lands and cultures and a broader un- derstanding of the English language are the profits reaped from the study of languages. The majority of their work involved making the 1971 prom a success. Again Mr. Hazlett and Mr. Shesky as- sisted onthe huge production. With heads together. the program committee came up with an original western theme for the prom, naming it the Wild, Wild West . The program committee also acquired the Stix and Stones for music and I Love You ,if ,Q li - PW, Alice B. Toklasn as the movie for entertainment. With a western theme, the decora- tion committee built up the props to resemble a western town, complete with bitching post. Other committees cared for the tickets and program booklets and helped to complete the necessary ar- rangements forthe final dance of high school. te . Q ffl? 4 s 1 .
