Bob Snow, Ted Price, Dick Tway Row 4-Floyd Harbin, Walter Bechtle, Bob Rohr, Jacl: Daum, Bill Marquis, Tom Wiant Red Cross Council The Red Cross Council. composed ol the home room vice presidents, had a very busy and serviceable year. Their projects were directed by Don Hoffman, president: John McDaniel, vice president: Dan Day, secretary: Bon- nie Schneck, treasurer and representative: and Miss Grove, adviser. Among their many accomplishments were: the packing ol approximately sixty Red Cross box- es, the sending ol stutcled toys made by the home eco- nomics classes, and the distribution ol Christmas cards made by the art department. Secretaries The major job ol the secretaries oi the home rooms is the student banking. Every Tuesday the students put their money into their own separate school account which is attended to by either the secretary himself or by his deputies. He then tabulates a report that is sent with the money to the National City Bank. The school banking system is extremely beneficial in that it trains students in thrilt and regular saving. Treasurers In the treasurers ol each home room is placed a tre- mendous responsibility. Nearly every morning there is a canvas lor some sales drive or school lunction that the treasurer must make. There are Herald subscriptions to sell at the beginning ol each semester, season tickets to football games, Quiver yearbooks, tickets to the Student Council-HieY dance, and memberships in various school organizations, each to be taken care ol by separate accounts. Student Council One ol the most active organizations at Harding was the Student Council, whose duty is to promote ac- tivities lor the benefit ol the students, to act as their governing body. and to bring about a deeper under- standing between laculty and students. The Harding versus Dayton Wilbur Wright lootball game on November 4 brings back pleasant memories. The gala event ol the third annual HOMFCOMING was sponsored by the Student Council on that date. ln assembly Mr. May introduced thirty-three candidates nominated to reign over that outstanding atlair, thus giving the pupils a chance to make their choice. Gloria Cummings was elected queen and Sue Arter, Mary Lusk, Jo Anne Saull, and Sue Sparks were chosen to be her attendants. The girls were nominated by the seniors, but were elected by the entire student body. Get your ticket to the Hatchet Hop! was the cry heard around Harding when the Hi-Y joined the Stu- dent Council for their annual semi-formal dance in honor ol George Washington's birthday. The dance was held on February I8 in the Y.M.C.A., and over one hundred couples danced to the music ol Chuck Christopher and his band. Colored lights twinkled over the crowd and gay red and white hatchets made line souvenirs by which to remember this dance. The officers ol this year's council were: Don Hotl- man, president: Dan Geran, vice president: Joyce Parr, secretary: and Gloria Connor, treasurer. Faculty advisers were Mrs. Grigsby, Miss Woltley, and Mr. Williams. STUDENT COUNCIL Front row-Gloria Connor, Beverly Hurley, Jo Ann Roseberry, Peggy McWilliams, Susan Courtright, Dan Geran, Don Hoffman Second row-Ed Boldaul, Joe Thomas, Steve Lacey, Mr. Williams, Charles Borland, Miss Wolfley, Mrs. Grigsby Standing-Virginia Schertzer, Dave Ulrich, Joyce Parr Spanish Club 01,05 aihalafgoa All students taking second year Spanish met once a month to learn more about the customs of the people down South. Plays, songs, speeches, and poems made their meetings entertaining as well as informative. The outstanding meeting of the year was the Christmas party. After an enjoyable program, according to old Spanish custom, the pinata, a large, brightly decorated bag sus- pended from the ceiling, was broken, and candy and favors tell in a shower all over the room. The officers of the Spanish Club were: Dean Drake, president: Dick Leffler, vice president: Gloria Cummings, secretary: and Gloria Connor, treasurer. Miss Duffy was their adviser. French Club JL pefif Sabn The Le Petit Salon was composed of second year French students and their adviser, Miss Isabel Freer. Their officers were: president, Virginia Schertzer: vice president, Joan Bayles: secretary, Rose Reidy: treasurer, Rae Fetter: and reporter, Jane Lockwood. The meetings were held every other Thursday of each month in regular class periods. The programs, arranged by the vice president, consisted of translated reports on various subjects of in- terest to those studying the French culture and customs. Games and anecdotes which contributed to the knowl- edge and enjoyment of the French language were also part of the informative programs. Art Club Cofor mauled This group was made up of the art students and other enthusiasts who were unable to include art in their schedule. Their plans were formulated and executed by Dave Foreman, president: George Spinks, vice president: June Kear, secretary: Stanley Williams, treasurer: Dow- ard Runyan, program chairman: and Joseph Bregha, the art instructor, their adviser. Their meetings were held in the evenings once a month. Movies, talks about various phases of art, and social events well 'filled the calendar of this organization. All these helped interested members to learn more about art and to increase in its apprecia- tion. Library Council 14.4. gat... The Library Council under the direction of the librarian, Miss Katherine Moore, worked conscientiously this year on many worthwhile projects. One of these was vocational guidance reading. This provided for two reading periods in the library for each student and en- couraged further research on the student's part. Another important undertaking was instruction of sophomores. This included a general introduction to the library and the system used, as well as the use of the special reference books. The council's officers for the school year T949-SO were: president, Joyce Wintringham: vice president, Kay Cope: secretary, Sharon VVolf: and treasurer, Donna Herman. The many services offered by the printing club include the printing oi grade cards, office blanks and Iorms, football and basketball programs, material lor the Board ot Fd- ucation, and tickets and programs lor the iunior and senior plays as well as lor all the year's activities. How- ever, probably their biggest iob is the printing of senior name cards. The boys turn out and check their work carefully to avoid costly mistakes. Future Tradesmen of America The Future Tradesmen ol America, or the 50 Club as they are commonly called, are the senior members oi the Vocational Course. They hold their regular meet- ings once a week and have a devotional period in the shop on Wednesdays at which pastors from various churches speak. These girls spent many long hours and much hard work to achieve their purpose, to unite the younger generation, to strive for peace and a better world in which to live. Their many pleasurable recreations and service projects were well planned and capably executed by Clara Jane Frederick, president: Rose Reidy, vice president: Joyc Parr, secretary: Marilyn Bachelder, treasurer: and Phyllis Huffman, chaplain. Chairman of six committees complemented the cabinet. Programsl Get your programs! was the cry heard as the Y-Teens were busy at their first project of the year, that of selling football programs at all the home games. Around Christmas time, with the help of the stu- dents' generous donations, four Care packages were filled for the needy overseas. A colorful program, in which Santa Claus jBetty Muntsingerj presided in the merriment, was given before Christmas vacation. ln Feb- ruary Y-Teens contributed their time and energy to the Heart Fund by distributing plastic hearts to donors in the business district. Y-Teen Week was observed February 20 through February 24 during which devotions were conducted each morning over the public address system. At the end of the week, the annual assembly sponsored by the Y-Teens consisted of a musical talent show from Ohio Wesleyan University. ln the spring the Y- Teens joined the Hi-Y clubs in conducting the annual Pre-Easter services at the Nazarene Church. These were held every morning before school during the week preceding Easter-vacation, and were made especially beautiful and inspiring by the fact that the students themselves led in the singing of hymns, the prayers, and other devotionals. This year for the first time the addresses were given entirely by the members of the two clubs. Other activities included a winter formal, The Snow Ball: a father- daughter banquet, at which the Marion civic men's chorus, The Serenaders, gave a program of many types of songs: several joint Hi-Y and Y-Teen meetings: a journey to Galion for a district conference at which ideas were blended to bring out Christian ideals in their club: and, to end the year, a Senior Farewell Dinner held in honor of the senior members of the Y- Teen and Hi-Y clubs. As the members of the Y-Teens look back on the ear of '49-'50, they can be proud and know that they have well fulfilled their duties as a ser- vice organization in that they have helped their community and school to try to build a better world. Now then, sonny, what would you like ol' The Y-Teen Snow Ball Santy to bring you? The play centered around the contlict over the possession ol a Connecticut larm house which the Gage lamily had purchased under the assumption that the owners, the Rockwoods, were dead. Thus the Rockwoods lived in comlort while the Gages sutlered lrom exposure and lack ol load. When Mrs. Gage, lover ol antiques, learned that the barn, instead ol the house, was the oldest building in Connecticut, she decided to have the barn remodeled and to live there. We are very proud of them, not only for the fact that they made an ex- cellent record of eight wins and only two losses. and that several of our players received state rec- ognition, but also for the fact that they built char- acter and good sportsmanship in our school. Two others who have accomplished much in the promo- tion of Harding athletics and this feeling of fine sportsmanship are Dewey N. Bohyer, athletic di- rector, and E. Paul Huffman, faculty manager. How well this applies to the Harding Reserves. They practiced laithlully and showed plenty ol spunlc in all the games they played. We may be iustly proud ol our reserve team that holds a record ol nine wins and seven losses. These boys will provide the nucleus at our varsity squad next year, and we will depend on them to lceep up Harding's past records. The season lor the Vice Presidents started out with Bexley, too, and they were the winners ol not only that game, but the following tour. They were really the ones 57 to initiate the new Coliseum February 7th, by playing Galion before the varsity. Their first set-back came when Lima South edged us with a 50-Sl victory. They breezed through the next three games coming out on top every time. Then they seemed to have a strealc ol bad luclc, lor all the rest ot the season's games were losses. With George Keel as their able instructor, these boys have practiced the various techniques ot handling the ball, and next year they will step up to become the top performers ol the court lor '5l. The lans have given them a lot ol support, lor they see great promise in the team they'll be cheering on to victory next winter. Harding Bexley . Cross country meets are scored on the basis ol points, the low score winning. A team is comprised ol seven men lor dual meets. The order in which the men tinish is tabulated and each team adds up its respective score. Thus, in order to win a meet. several members ot the team must finish among the tirst tive, and the rest must finish in good time. This year they entered into lour dual meets and one triangular meet. Most ol us were pleasantly surprised when the team won the district championship and placed ninth in the state. This leat was especially commendable because at the tact that Harding's thin-clad program is still in its inlancy, this being only its second year. The team made a good start lor the season by play- ing host to Worthington and winning with a score ol 23- 32. The second meet was run here with Columbus East as their opponents: Harding chalked up another win, 24- 32. They suttered the only loss ol the season at Mansfield with a defeat ol 35f2O. The last dual meet run by our team was with Columbus South on our own soil, where they rallied lor another victory ol 24-35. The triangular meet held at Worthington included Newark, Worthington. and Harding. We point with pride to the scores: Newark 57, Worthington 42, and Harding 28. The seven maior runners lor Hardings team were: seniors, Bill Castanien, Paul Eckert, and Stanley Williams: iuniors, Dick Bracy, Max Hart, and Karl Scheitlerg and one sophomore, Bob Bowman. Coach Somerlot will have lour ol these seven boys back next year to delend the title won by the thin-clads at '50, so you may expect another exciting season. We must not neglect to mention those back ol the team who work plenty hard but are olten overlooked when the glories ot victory are passed around. We are speaking, ol course, ot the managers. This Year the head manager was Pat Regulesi his able assistants were Sandy Gay, a iunior, and Jim Ferriman, a sophomore. BASEBALL TEAM . . . The season started with many practices in the rain, cold, and even one in the snow. Sparked by the slugging ol George Statler, the Harding nine opened its baseball season by whipping Waldo 9-2. Then they blasted Upper Sandusky IO-l behind the two hit pitching of Don John- son. The Prexies raclced up their third straight victory by edging undeleated Mansfield on the rivals' diamond. 3-2. They won their tirst tourney game easily over Colum- bus South 6-I. Harding combined good hitting and pitch- ing to win their second tournament game IO-3 over Columbus West. They advanced to the district finals by walloping Columbus Central I9-6. Ashland was downed by the undeleated Harding team 6-O. Ashland will remember this game lor a long time because big George Statler hit the longest ball ever to be hit in that stadium. Harding hung up baseball victory number eight by clawing the Galion Tigers to the tune ol 6-2. Their lone deleat was received from Linden-McKinley in the tournament finals ol the Central district by the close mar- gin ot 5-4. The Prexies ended their baseball year with nine wins and one loss by blanlcing Mansfield 2-O. The season proved to be a stepping-stone lor lour boys who signed up with bigger teams. U, . an I L JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Dick Le s Vice President Jack Doum Secretary Janet Reece Treasurer Gail Co Work today for citizenship tomorrow is the motto which has guided us, the iunior class, through two busy years at Harding. Dur- ing these years we have faithfully upheld Harding's ideals and have succeeded in establishing fine records in scholarship, athletics, and many other activities. To head our class this year, we selected tour competent class- mates: Dick Lewis, president: Jack Doum, vice president: Janet Reece, secretary: and Gail Carey, treasurer. These officers have well fulfilled our wish lor capable and honorable leaders. We have participated in many social activities, but at the top ot the agenda was the presentation at our iunior class play, The Night at January I6th. It was a murder trial drama, sprinkled with comedy, ond, with an excellently chosen cast, scored one of the biggest successes of the year. The iunior class also contributed many outstanding athletes to all phases at Harding's athletic activities. Many ot our tellows wan varsity letters this year and aided greatly in bringing to Harding out- standing sports records tor the years I949-l95O. f We are equally proud ot our accomplishments in the scholastic ield. To add beauty and color to our class, we chose the red rose as our tlower and blue and silver as our colors. We, the class of l95I, are proud at our tine achievements in all walks ol lite at Harding. With our accomplishments ot the last two years listed under Wonderful Experiences and Times, we are looking lorward to our next year when we will be the senior members at our Alma Mater, and we feel confident that we will be able to till this position in o manner ot which Harding will be proud. Q Dove Foreman, Merle Doom, Harry Dowler, Jean Kneisley SEN IORS . . . SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS .Af fad weile maJe if Seniors-Remember, as we started our high school careers, how we looked so eagerly ahead to each new year? Now, suddenly, it's all over, and we find ourselves looking back on those four years that are so filled with precious memories of our high school days. New friends, the dances, the fun at Club Co-Ed, the chats in the halls, football games, group fellowship found in organizations. the plays, yes, and even the studies, are among the things, large and small, for which we'll remember Harding. Many of us spent our freshman year at Central, some at Vernon, and others, their freshman, sophomore, and junior years at Edison. At Central our officers were: Walter Bechtle, Don Hoffman, Jean Kneisley, and Betty Roberts. Our big nights came when we produced three one-act plays, Party Line, The Prettiest Girl in Town, and lt's So Peaceful in the Country. The Vernon Bulldogs were rep- resented and led by Greg Graham, Harry Dowler, Mar- ilyn Guy, and Janet Short. The successful production of two plays, Jerry Gets the Fever and Her First Party Dress, gave us much satisfaction. At Edison there were no class officers, but social life was made interesting with a class party and a variety show sponsored by the Y- Teens. Central and Vernon ioined hands when we were sophomores and chose Harry Dowler, Merle Daum, Clara Jane Frederick, and Pat Burlce as officers. Edison sophomores chose Charles Borland, Barbara Kenyon, Marilyn Case, and Connie Ward to conduct them throughout the year. Their play, Strictly Formal, was their biggest accomplishment. Together we chose as our symbols the class flower, the red rose, and our official President ., ... , Harry Dowler Vice President ..... . . Merle Daum Secretary ,. . Jean Kneisley Treasurer . .. Dave Foreman colors, maroon and white. Qui' inspiring motto, You get out ol lite exactly what you put into it, will be re- membered as words to live by. The halt-way mark was begun with the iuniors choos- ing Harry Dowler, Doug Brokaw, Jean Kneisley. and Mar- ilyn Guy as their otcticers. The highlights ot the year were our three-act comedy, Double Exposure and the pure chasing ol class rings and pins. That year Ray Eritch. Charles Borland, Jo Anne Roseberry, and Phyllis Laucher were managing the atlairs ol the Edison Juniors. And then, almost belore we could catch our breath, our senior year began. All students ol Harding and Ediw son united tor the lirst time: we chase Harry Dowler, Merle Daum, Jean Kneisley, and Dave Foreman to plan and direct our activities. Betty Roberts and Jo Bayles brought us the latest school news in their weekly publicaf tion ol the Herald. Virginia Mason worked long and hard editing our Quiver yearbook. The HiAY and the Student Council ioined forces to bring us one ol the most success- ful dances ever experienced at our high school. Home- coming was a thrilling event with Queen Bunny Cum- mings and her court, Sue Arter, Mary Lusk, Sue Sparks and Jo Anne Saull reigning. January Thaw, a three-act comedy directed by Miss Martha Troop, was immensely enjoyed by all. Sports. activities, and musical organiza- tions absorbed much ol our time and interest. As we leave Harding, we leel that we have well lultiiled our expectations, and that we owe it to our school to put into practice in the luture the knowledge and prin- ciples we have learned here in the past tour years. One ol the greatest honors bestowed upon a senior is election into the National Honor Society. The members are chosen by scholastic ranking, service, and character and leadership ratings by teachers and classmates, Much is expected ol this group in the way at luture community service.
