lg... i t Q 1947 X AX XX Q c X . Xi, ,J lt's hard to realize that in l872 nothing was known about the many things which are necessities to us today. lt's a busy world we're living in and the class ot '47 is ready to jump into it. It makes it easier to remember that for 75 years Marion graduates have gotten into the swing ot a growingly complex world. Those 75 years have been years ot looking ahead- years ot development. So the class ot '47 prepares to look ahead to further progress. XX I.

1872 ELIZABETH RUEHRMUND CHARLES FISHER --' - N! - Today-l947-we loolc back seventy-tive years to see the tirst graduating class ot Marion. ln I872 there were two graduates, Charles Fisher and Elizabeth Ruehrmund. What a contrast their number malces to the size ot ttf I947 graduating class. To us, their school lite seems very tar away and ditterent from our busy one today. Seventy-tive years ot progress-progress which has led to the ultra-modem.-a Jr bombs, airplanes, plastics are all things which mean modern to us, today.

Eiffel' Gig Gllfl 3? Gig From a one-room school house, with their teet around the stove, to one ot thirty rooms. From lunch buckets with an apple tor the teacher, to hamburgers and colces-Yes, it's a long way from i872 to I947. From bloomer girls to sweater girls in one long leap. The class ot '72 to the class ot '47-What's gone between? A couple ot world-shalcing wars, an airplane or two, jalopies that were it in '72 and still are in '47, Many, many eager gradu- ates went out into the darlc. mysterious world trom l-larding's halls-Each one better, more lcnowgng than the last. School changed with everything else. Fundamentals stayed the same, but new things were added. lt's still, readin,' writin,' and 'rithmeticf' but things have become more complex and activities have talcen an important place in school lite. What would we do without those tour o'clock meetings and evening tun7 Sports are the thing ot the day. Who can imagine a school year without the tootball and baslcetball teams-well, that was l872. Shakespeare was bothering English students just as much in l872 as he malces us pull our hair today. 'Rithmetic problems then aslced how tar the horse traveled instead ot how high the airplane tlies as they do today. Years pass, fads change. but Harding goes on producing graduates ready tor the times- whether it is l872 or l947.
