What a contrast their number malces to the size ot ttf I947 graduating class. To us, their school lite seems very tar away and ditterent from our busy one today. Seventy-tive years ot progress-progress which has led to the ultra-modem.-a Jr bombs, airplanes, plastics are all things which mean modern to us, today. lg... i t Q 1947 X AX XX Q c X . Xi, ,J lt's hard to realize that in l872 nothing was known about the many things which are necessities to us today. lt's a busy world we're living in and the class ot '47 is ready to jump into it. It makes it easier to remember that for 75 years Marion graduates have gotten into the swing ot a growingly complex world. Those 75 years have been years ot looking ahead- years ot development. So the class ot '47 prepares to look ahead to further progress. XX I. Eiffel' Gig Gllfl 3? Gig From a one-room school house, with their teet around the stove, to one ot thirty rooms. From lunch buckets with an apple tor the teacher, to hamburgers and colces-Yes, it's a long way from i872 to I947. From bloomer girls to sweater girls in one long leap. The class ot '72 to the class ot '47-What's gone between? A couple ot world-shalcing wars, an airplane or two, jalopies that were it in '72 and still are in '47, Many, many eager gradu- ates went out into the darlc. mysterious world trom l-larding's halls-Each one better, more lcnowgng than the last. School changed with everything else. Fundamentals stayed the same, but new things were added. lt's still, readin,' writin,' and 'rithmeticf' but things have become more complex and activities have talcen an important place in school lite. What would we do without those tour o'clock meetings and evening tun7 Sports are the thing ot the day. Who can imagine a school year without the tootball and baslcetball teams-well, that was l872. Shakespeare was bothering English students just as much in l872 as he malces us pull our hair today. 'Rithmetic problems then aslced how tar the horse traveled instead ot how high the airplane tlies as they do today. Years pass, fads change. but Harding goes on producing graduates ready tor the times- whether it is l872 or l947. E. PAUL HUFFMAN Scene: Room I2-I-larding's room ot figures and triangles, conducive to straight thinlcing, and surrounded by all the instruments ot this trade, the shelt ot boolrs, the box ot spheres and cones, and the dusty black- boards. Time: Any class period in a school day at l-larding. Character: These things remind us of a man loved and respected by all ot us at Harding l-ligh. Many things lilce his interest in each ot us and in our tutures have endeared him to us. His intense enthusiasm in a timeless subject creates in us a deep respect tor him. And so we dedicate this I947 Quiver to you, E. Paul t-lutfman, with all our thanlcs tor everything. J LOGGING OUT OF CLASS D. W. BRICKLEY, JR. F. L. THOMAS H. J. BARNHART E. E. HOLT J. D. TORRANCE F. C. ROBINSON Mar ofgiclbccafion Seventy-tive years ago must have been the days ot troclc coats and long beards. At least so it seems to the modern class ot '47. l-lowever, we lcnow that through these seventy-tive years members of the Marion Board ot Education have stood behind their students all the way. Never inditterent to our needs. you have always taken the best care ot us. We have gone through the years ot war and shortage with you, and you have always done your best tor us. Your plans tor future graduates have interested us and you have shared your ideas with us. For all these things and many more, the class ot I947 salutes you and says thanks lin emnriam A s s A as l F. L. THOMAS, M.D. To Dr. F. L. Thomas, a member ot the Board ot Education and a loyal patron of every student, we pause to pay deep tribute and sincere appreciation tor his taithtul devotion to our schools. We are told that the home, the school, and the church are the three most important institutions in our American lite today. ln Dr. Thomas, we tound an unusual dedication to these three major institutions which en- abled him to make a distinct contribution to community lite. As a father and husband he was devoted to his tamily. The home, which was so dear to him, was a place where the principles ot love, freedom, and democracy could always be tound. To our schools, he gave many hours of service through his eleven years on the Board. l-lis judgment was always important tor it grew out ot a deep sense ot the value ot children and young people and their growth in Christian character. As a churchman, he was outstanding. l-lis abiding taith in God gave to him that rare gift-peace ot mind. It was this sign ot God's love in his lite that enabled him to serve ettectively so many, both day and night in his ministry ot healing. Men, women, young people and children will be intluenced for years to come by the example ot his lite and the tlame ot his Christian spirit. The following lines ot one ot Dr. Thomas' tavorite songs give the secret to his usetul Christian lite: MY GOD AND I My God and l will go tor aye together We'll walk and talk and jest as good friends do This earth will pass and with it common trifles But God and l will go unendingly. -Author Unlcnown -Written by Margaret l-lutfman I .SZAOOK .x4c!mini:5frafion To Mr. l-lolt, our superintendent - Through seventy-tive years, many men have guided the great number ot students passing through l-larding's halls. We give our cheers to you, tor we lcnow and love your ever ready smile and helping hand, your wise words that lceep us ever striving toward the pest. E. E. HOLT, B.A.. M.A To all those who have made our school years easier, and more tun tor us, the class ot '47 otters its deep respect and best wishes tor other years ot'successtul school administration. .jwlar ing ig .gzlzoof The management of schools has always been complicated: but through seventy-five long years, each year has brought new problems and each time the leaders of our school system have met them with new solutions. Today these men have solved for us the veteran problems, and have planned for us new and better schools. With the promise of new schools to come, they have faced together crowded conditions and worlced them out the best they could. Complexities have constantly arisen but soon they have been talcen care of by the administrators of our school system, who have their eye on us and have our futures in mind. rw: , ' ' fr .,f-'f?? We've kept to our motto Be the Best ot Whatever You Are and have tried to be a credit to I-larding. lt all started way back in our treshman year when we really got going to make our history something great. The world was at war, but we kept a friendly war ot competition going on between us-those classes ot Edison, Central, and Vernon. Yes, that's when we got started but our history began to grow when we became 'Isophies' at I-Iarding and Edison. Jim Riley led us at I-larding with Dick Eckert. Jo Ann Kerns, and Gene Frederick to help him out. Under the Red and Black we took on our tull share in clubs and sports. We showed all kinds ot talent by helping put over war projects and piping many sweet notes in Choir, Band, and Orchestra. Our tellow classmen at Edison chose Jim Willis, l-lenry Field, Diclc Freese, and l-larold lams to guide them. All together we chose our class symbols, going patriotic with the red rose as our class flower and navy and white as our colors. Our junior mentors were Jim Riley, president: Gene Frederick, vice-president: Jo Ann Kerns, secretary: and Jerry Richie, treasurer. lt was a tine job they did, too, lead- ing us along the way ot a very successful year. During this year we toolc prominent positions in club activities and became Flard- ing mainstays in the tield ot sports. We had a wondertul time presenting Ever Since Eve and we teel it was really a credit to the class ot '47, It was in this year we gath' ered together in cooperated ettort toward the time when we'd be seniors. Miss Freer congratulating Joan Kerns, salutatorian and Dave Brown and Mr. May congratulating Elizabeth Leeper and Donna Murray co valedic Anne Baldwin next high in class of '47. torians ot the senior class. Right in step all the way, were the juniors ot the Blue and Gold led by Jim Willis, Mario Nolti, Diclc McWilliams, and Glen Massie. So at last the day arrived when we were all united together. Edison juniors and l-larding juniors had become one big gang as seniors-the class ot '47, The year, crammed tull ot tun and activities has dashed by and we can hardly realize it. Where's the time gone and what's happened? Well, way baclc in September we chose able Gene Frederick as our class president with Jim Ainey, Alan Cleveland, and Doug Duer as his teammates in our last year. Mario Nolti had a big job as Prexy football captain and Student Council president- he made us proud. The l-lerald every-Tuesday morning was the job ot Pat Dearing and Anne Baldwin, the editors. All of us helped out-senior committees did a good job, malcing it possible to graduate in great style. Wings ot the Morning talces a big place in our history. Our senior play was new, it was ditterent and it was good. The class ot I947 has tinished up in great style-all the time with our motto ahead ot us, Be the Best ot Whatever You Are! May it always be so. 1 eniom FROM 2 T0 326-WE MADE IT! Harding High-you linger in the past. But to us your memories will last, Days gone by-with deep regrets. Days gone by we'll ne'er forget: 'I947' we will praise, To be part of: hear our voices raise We salute and sing with joy dear old Harding High. We recall-The times you helped us out, When all things looked black and faded out: So we say Farewell again, Thank you, Harding, for taking us in: 'Class of 47'-we look up, And we give to you the Golden Cup Cherishing the memories held Of you, Harding High. unior add OFFICERS Iris Eclrels, secretary: Mary Gruber, treasurer: Jack HotTman, vice-president: Jim Hill, president. 1 ' 1 Not to recede, but to advance, this, the motto ot us, the junior class ot Hard- ing, gives you the key to our success. We like to think that this year, we, the in-be- tween class, have held the balance ot l-larding strongly and proudly. As the center ot our balance we chose as our otlicers Jim l-lill, president: Jack l-lottman, vice-president: lris Eckels, secretary: and Mary Gruber, treasurer. This year our membership in clubs has grown and we've made ourselves a neces- sary part ot the football and basketball teams. Did you hear us in l-larding's music this year? We were there in big numbers doing our part. We'll remember Footloose, our junior play, for a long time. By the laughs it received we know it was a credit to us. We've kept black and gold as our symbols and the red rose as our class flower. Before long we'll be seniors, graduates in '48, but we'll always remember our junior year as a good one along the way. ,I CAM, CHAPTER Ti-iREE-ALMosT FREE Just nine more months About 270 more days And only 6480 hours to go .Q V - M 5, 3 ' 7 'ie ff if T 4. No matter how tar back we look we tind in every class worthy students who have become or are becoming good citizens ot our town and our world. To become a member ot the National l-lonor Society places us in this group. This is the highest honor which Harding can give any ot its students. From the class ot '47, titty-one students gained membership. Picked by teachers and each other, they represent the best Harding has to otter in scholarship, service and character. But with this honor, comes responsibility to use to the best ot your ability those talents recognized in you. To use them in ways that l-larding might be proud ot you. We are a large organization-we are Y-Teens. Our song begins We, the younger generation, and it tells to all what the purpose ot Y-Teen is. lt is to build a better world and many other noble things. ln our club at Harding we try to do some ot those things. This year we made Flardingites especially Y-Teen conscious during the week ot February 2l-28 which we designated as our week. On Friday, February 2I, we gave our annual assembly and during the following weelc a club memberyconducted morning devotions over the public address system each morning. As a service organization we were helptul in many ways, one ot the main ones being our help in the March ot Dimes campaign. During the year we've had lots ot tun at parties and meetings, building in our school a spirit to help each one ot us. Leading us this year in making our club successtul were: Jo Ann Kerns, president: Betty Morse, vice presi- dent: Ann McDaniel, secretary: and Nancy Mitchell, treasurer, with other club members completing our cab- inet group. Directed by Mrs. Virginia Walker, the cast gave the three-act mystery, a mixture ot ordinary living, humor, and weirdness. Providing the ordinary living was Pat Dearing as Joyce Calvert, a young woman troubled by business and love. Ronald Powell and Jim Ainey as Adrian and David who were also dissatisfied with their lives, were both in love with her. Kindly Mrs. Ellis and Trudy-that was Jo Anne Kerns and La Vada Ellison-added to the confusion while Glenn Massie as tunny old Tonio lent humor to the story and his unpredictable daughter, Benedetta played by Barbara9McDonald always managed to keep him upset. This includes tinding the news, writing it up, checking by the editor and tinal preparation tor the printer and that Friday night deadline. This year as always special issues were included in the publications. These colortul, and extra-large ones came at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other times. The Herald brings us all the news with some gossip thrown in. lts purpose is to put the doings and thoughts ot l-larding in print every week. This year Pat Dearing and Anne Baldwin worked together as co-editors. To help them out on the money end were Dale Cottrill, business manager, and lrl Reasoner, advertising manager with his assistant, Tom Torrance. Don Throck- morton kept things circulating and Isabel Sycks took care ot exchanges. To keep them all going straight was Miss Foreman's guiding hand.
