Class of 1946 Dear Members of the Faculty, When we entered l-larding's doors in the tall ot I943, a group ot very green sophomores wane dered through the halls. We were then on the threshold ot the door leading to all the school' adventures and rather bewildered by it all. Gradually, we were talcen under your wing and you came to understand each one ot ug. Under your gentle but etlective direction, we entered into the various organizations and as weve gone through these three years, we've tound our place in l-larding. Never a day passed when you didnlt come to our rescue in many, many ways. With your help we have been able to plan more etliciently lor our tutures. There have been times when you needtully thwarted our youthtul spirit and we understand now your sincere interest. You have caretully guided us in our journey along our perilous path and have given u w secure a toothold on the ladder ot lite. Some ot us will continue our education, others will advance to tale our place in this world, but never will you, who have contributed so much to us as tuture citizens, be torgotten. Sincerely, we say Hlhanlrsf' jf Cf lv fa.5J 0 46 l 3A e Qlll.l'E'I' 1946 ,-4, 1:5 fn-J ,emi ,I enior aerifrofi President . . . Ralph Weber Vice President , , , .. Dick Taylor Secretary , ,. Jacqueline Riddle Treasurer , , Ray Ballinger SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS RALPH WEBER, DICK TAYLOR, JACOUELINE RIDDLE, RAY BALLINGER me Quiuer PRELUDE... Eor twelve tull years we've looked torward to being seniors -and now, that never to be torgotten experience is past. It was just tour years ago that the Centralites chose as their leaders Joyce Bohyer, president: Robert England, vice president: Billie McCoy, secretary: Phyllis Metzger, treasurer. Dramatic talent was displayed in three one-act plays: Wise Girl, Suitable tor Charity, and Roly-Poly-Ereckle-Pace. The X-Ray, a combination ot news and gossip, was edited by Marilyn Cory, while Bob England and Carl l'larbolt were, res- pectively, tootball and basketball captains. At Vernon, vigorous campaigns resulted in the election ot Ralph Weber, presi- dent: Charlie Wiant, vice president: I-lelen Beal, secretary: Ray Ballinger, treasurer. The Vernonian was headed by several student editors, and in the athletic limelight was Ralph Weber, tootloall and basketball captain. ln the dramatic line, two plays were presented: The Pampered Darling and The I-lenpecked Husband. We tinally got together under the Red and Black in our sophomore year, and with the help ot our Edison pals we chose 'Citizenship today tor lite tomorrow tor our class motto. And we got down-right patriotic in the selection ot the red carnation with colors ot white and blue. Laurie Eeaver led us as president: I-lelen Beal, vice president: Joan I-lottman, secretary: Dick Eoster, treasurer. Then we were iuniorsg only one more year to go! Eor the top two otticers we decided upon gridmen Ralph Weber, president, and Dave Lee, vice president. .Ioan I-lottman kept our records straight while Ray Ballinger headed the treasury department. We got our class rings early in the spring and took care ot Prom arrangements tor the seniors. Ot course, you remember how we turned dramatic tor the junior play, Don't Take My Penny. We were pretty proud ot that pertormancel enior C4155 .Mdfory INTERLUDE . . POSTLUDE While all this was transpiring, the Edison sophomores elected Ralph Loreno, presi- dent: Bob Erick, vice president: John Melvin and Mary Noggle, secretaries: Bob Bond, treasurer. The juniors presented When We Were Young as their dramatic contri- bution and chose as their leaders Bob Bond, president: Paul Miers, vice-president: Shirley l-laberman, secretary: Ralph Loreno, treasurer. Colleen Ruggles edited the Spotlight that year. By the time we had become seniors, most ot us had a little ditterent outloolc on lite. During the summer the war had otticially ended, and tor the very tirst time we could plan and tallc about our future with some hope that our dreams might be realized. Ralph Weber was re-elected president: Dick Taylor, vice president: Jaclcie Riddle. secretary: and Ray Ballinger, too, served a second term as treasurer. Laurie Feaver was elected baslcetball captain, and Diclc Taylor led l-larding's grid warriors down the tield. Margaret Burlce and l-larry Wilhelm were our l-lerald editors. By being active in music. extra-curricular activities, and Club Co-ed, we were always on the go and loved it! We'd like to tell you more: we've worlced hard and made so many happy memor- ies. Don't torget us-you'll hear from us in the years to come! .740 Quirfer 'U Lefi: Abrams, Richard Alex, Harriet Axthelm, Edward Baer, Marian Baldauf, Mary K. The Junior Class of '46 wants to say hello We'd like to invite you to come along with us as we review the year s activities. Ready? Here we go- Remember that day in East I Iall when we elected our class officers forthe year? Jim Riley certainly has made an outstanding president, hasn't he? This fine group of officers was rounded out by the election of Gene Fredricks as vice president: Jerry Richie as treasurer: and Joan Kerns as secretary. We chose the red rose as our class flower and our colors were navy and white. We were well represented in the field of sports. Our fellows have done well both on the football field and on the basketball court. On the credit side of the ledger we can chalk up a big success for our Junior Class play, Ever Since Eve. Everyone co-operated in an effort to make it one of the best junior plays ever presented. Another credit to the class was the way we were represented in I-Iardingls many club activities. The motto that has inspired us through the year is Be the Best of Whatever You Are. The spirit of comradeship that has prevailed this year is an inspiration to all of us to strive even harder toward our goal next year when we will become the graduating class of I947. jk, Quzwf 1946 ewan' Une WITH THE JUNIORS ,.,,: . QUARTER NOTES Well, here we are-the alumni ot Central and Vernon-ready to carry on Hard- ing's famous traditions as best we can. We're just the youngsters ot the tamily but our class settled right down to business this year by entering into the well-known Harding spirit. We started ott by electing Jim Rea to conduct us through the year. Jim l-lill was his most able assistant. We entrusted our record keeping to Ann McDaniel, and Bill Virden was our elected treasurer. The symbols we chose to be identified with are the red rose as our class tlower and blaclc and gold as our otticial colors. We embodied our goals in the motto: Not to recede, but to advance. The sporting scale resounded with many sophomore lceynotes this year and welve been active in all organizations. Many sophomore voices joined into harmony in the Junior Choir and many ot our number tools instruments in hand and joined the band and orchestra. We're just on the threshold ot l-larding's adventures and we have a lot ot ambi- tions we're going to strive to tultill in these three years. That about sums up everything. Maybe you haven't heard much from us yet, but you will. Alma Mater will be proud ot the class ot l948. We're on the following pages, it you'd lilce to talce a loolr at us. This honor not only awards scholastic achievement but also recognizes the citizens ot tomorrow. The members are elected by the taculty tiom those ranking in the upper third ot the class. Although the entire upper third is eligible only a certain per cent are elected. They are chosen tor their abilities in scholar- ship, leadership, character, and service. This year 4I seniors became members ot the Society. Miss Isabel Freer is the faculty advisor tor the group. The induction ceremony was held in West Hall on Wednesday, April 24, at which time the members were instructed on the ideals ot the National Honor Society. Early in high school students set the organization as their aim and work toward this goal. Harding's chapter ot this national organization is ample proof of the studiousness ot youth and their earnest seriousness. Stuart Brown portrayed Speed Erwin the assistant editor. The parts ot Susan Blake and Betsy Erwin, who did their best to see that girls were represented on the paper, were played by Ann I-tewetson and Betty Ullmer. Tom Torrance appeared as otticer Simmons. Mr. and Mrs. Clover were played by Jim Ainey and Barbara Thibaut. The romantic angle ot the play was supplied by the school principal, Diclc Wooley, and the young journalism teacher who was played by Jo Ann Kerns. Ann Dodrill, as Lucy- belle Lee, caused some complications. Alan Cleveland appeared as captain ot the tootball team. Other tootball players were Ray l-larrutt, James Eogle, Mantord Layman, and Glen Tomlin. The cast and their director, Miss Alexander, should be commended tor their tine pertormance.
