We, the Senior Class of l945, dedicate our yearbook to one whose mem- ory .will ever bealive, exemplifying the true spirit of youth, the theme of our book. Herbert Garster, who died on August 25, l944, has left behind him innumerable friends gained through his courtesy, friendliness, and sincerity to everyone. Known to all his teachers as an excellent student, Herb tem- pered his scholastic pursuits with his intense love of music, and'won endless admiration for his accomplishments with his clarinet. Always ready to accept and fulfill the responsibilities of any duty given him Herb was advertising manager for the Harding Herald, where his effort and efficiency set an example hard to surpass. The inevitability of death is difficult to understand when so fine a boy as this is called upon to leave so early in his life, however, in a sense, Herb is not really gone from us. The spirit of youth will live on as long as God may give being to youths such as Herbert Garster. it Mourn not that l am gone away from youg Know my departure with no sigh or tearg lvlourn not the thought that for a final time, The echo of my laugh has found your ear, For l have lived and know the things we live for, The sunsets, trees, the sky, the morning sun, The memory of a song, the joy of friendships. These l have tucked within my heart: each one To ponder on in some remoter place, And they shall be life's treasures l have gleaned. l do not shed a tear as I am leaving, But I am glad that l have lived and seen. ' And as my footfalls dim and fade to silence, l l'll turn my head amid some sweeter song, And there but wave my hand beneath the sunshine, And leave with you a smile which says, so long. Ann Pennington. -5
