ur uides BOARD OF EDUCATION An unfailing trust in the spirit of youth and an understanding of the problems involved in building better citizens are among those qual- ities which make our Board of Education in- dispensable to us, ln order of appearance from left to right in the above picture the members to whom we, as youths, are indebted for their faithful ser- vice, are: H. l. BARNHART, President and Vice-President of the Osgood Co. l. D. TORRANCE, Clerk, Insurance Agent E. E. HOLT, Superintendent F. C. ROBINSON, N.Y.C. Freight Office DR. F. L, THOMAS, Dfccr 6 This group of men has great responsibili- ties in the direction of the spirit of youth. Theirs is the task of formulating rules and regulations, employing the superintendent and teachers, assuming all financial transactions, and actually building the school organization into a workable unit. The results of their efforts and of the teachers whom they employ are the finer citi- zens of tomorrow. All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of an empire depends on the education of youth. ---Aristotle. Capt. D. W. Brlckely, lr., pic- tured in center, is a member of this group now serving in the Army.

We, the Senior Class of l945, dedicate our yearbook to one whose mem- ory .will ever bealive, exemplifying the true spirit of youth, the theme of our book. Herbert Garster, who died on August 25, l944, has left behind him innumerable friends gained through his courtesy, friendliness, and sincerity to everyone. Known to all his teachers as an excellent student, Herb tem- pered his scholastic pursuits with his intense love of music, and'won endless admiration for his accomplishments with his clarinet. Always ready to accept and fulfill the responsibilities of any duty given him Herb was advertising manager for the Harding Herald, where his effort and efficiency set an example hard to surpass. The inevitability of death is difficult to understand when so fine a boy as this is called upon to leave so early in his life, however, in a sense, Herb is not really gone from us. The spirit of youth will live on as long as God may give being to youths such as Herbert Garster. it Mourn not that l am gone away from youg Know my departure with no sigh or tearg lvlourn not the thought that for a final time, The echo of my laugh has found your ear, For l have lived and know the things we live for, The sunsets, trees, the sky, the morning sun, The memory of a song, the joy of friendships. These l have tucked within my heart: each one To ponder on in some remoter place, And they shall be life's treasures l have gleaned. l do not shed a tear as I am leaving, But I am glad that l have lived and seen. ' And as my footfalls dim and fade to silence, l l'll turn my head amid some sweeter song, And there but wave my hand beneath the sunshine, And leave with you a smile which says, so long. Ann Pennington. -5

Youth of Spirit E. E. HOLT, Superintendent For his wisdom and his indispens- able advice to us, we look to Mr. May, our principal, for he understands our spirit of youth. Our faith has been with him while he has shouldered the responsibility of education in a period of world crises. His remarkable abilities in organi- zation have been valuable to our school in many phases of school life. Not only his organization but his effi- ciency in executing his program has won our admiration. lvlr. May has guided us through a busy year and with his ceaseless ef- forts we feel that it has been a suc- cessful one. Our sincerest gratitude goes to Mr. Miy, and our wish is that he may achieve as much in all of his under- takings, Here we express our appreciation to Mr, E. E. Holt, who, as superin- tendent of the public schools of Marion, has held our standards high. ln this responsibility he has kept well abreast of a changing world and has been progressive in assuring the people of Marion that their children will have adequate facilities for learn- ing, His unusual foresight in this not only accelerates all our undertakings but establishes a precedent for future days. Mr. Holt may well be a living ex- ample of our graduating class motto, Be the Best of Whatever You Are, and in him, we visualize the real spirit of youth through his constant effort and his sincere understanding. fgsril igmdsihfvolii' A. C. MAY, Principal 4 7
