Namelyz Autumn, Winter, and Spring. The book is divided into three sections, each repre- senting one of these seasons. We hope that in future years, the following pages will recall your school year of 1936-37. This time it is to the seniors, who are finished, yet beginning. Page 7 W i Page 8 WE HCDNCDR JAMES H. SMITH f james H. Smith, teacher of physics and higher arithmetic at Harding, has been the student's friend and advisor at all times. He is eager to assist, not by performing the work himself, but by making the way clear for the student to go forward, thinking for himself. He has instilled in them a sense of experiment. He is genial, sincere, and possesses a fine under- standing of human problems. For these virtues and many others too numerous to mention in this small space, to you, Mr. Smith, we dedicate this book. WE CHERISI-I We have been told by our elders that high school days are the most exciting of our lives. During our freshman year we attended one of three schools: Vernon, Central, or Edison. To these we were loyal. We had our competitive basketball teams and were, in a sense, enemies. Then we came to Harding. At first, we were hostile toward each other, but this soon was lost as we became bound together by common interests: football, basketball, clubs and classes. We met other people and made new friends, some of them our dearest. ' For these and many other things, Dear Harding, we cherish thee. Page 9 Page 10 FTER the first few days of becoming reacquainted with our friends whom we have not seen all summer, we are once again caught in the regular routine of studies. To the juniors and seniors, the school life is similar to that of the previous year. To the sophomores, it is new and exciting. They have never been to Harding and some of them are not sure what it all means. So for them the first few months are spent in getting acquainted with the teachers, fellow students, and ways of the school. Underlying all the excitement and worry of the sophomores is the hustle and bustle of reorganizing the clubs. It is during these fall days that Mr. Marshall's voice comes over the public address system to announce that all those who wish to join a certain club should meet in west hall immediately after school. Here it is that the teachers, as sponsors of the different organizations, aid the officers in bringing peace and order out of chaos. Outside school, too, the students are occupied with social activities. There are skating parties and bicycling to absorb much of the time. Thus the first section of the Quiver is devoted to teachers, sophomores, and fall activities. FALL SECTICDN Faculty Sopliomores Football Activities SEPTEMBER GCTCDBER NCDVEMBER .Mi ,.,....,,.. MR. C. They arrived from Vernon and Central, where they had been the freshmen and had ruled supreme. Here they are just sophomores. The officers at Central were: Jack Zeisler, president, Robert Pick, vice-presi- dent, james Todd, secretaryg and Rollin Beach, treasurer. At Vernon they were: Roy Abel, president, and Glen Gifford, treasurer. Extra curricular activities at both schools included Girl Reserves, Torch Clubs, and Dramatic Clubs. Miss Zelma Howard sponsored the dramatic club at Central which presented several plays during the year. She also produced the freshman plays, The Princess and The Initiation. l Miss Ackley directed the Vernon freshman plays, Orchids for Marie, Six Cups of Chocolate, and Honeymoon House. The Dramatic Club was spon- sored by Miss Wetterauer and Miss Ault. And now, at Harding, they have merged. They have become one class. For their leaders this year, they chose Jack Zeisler for president, Weldon Metz for vice-president, Dorothy Bechtle for secretary, and Dana Kirts for treasurer. Although the season was opened no score was chalked up. The struggle ended in a scoreless tie. Coach Carl Cramer, who was entering his second year at Harding, had led the squad through strenuous exercises for two weeks before school com- menced in September. The junior varsity, under the training of Coach Bill Williams, displayed promising talent for the future varsity squad. Mount Gilead was the first home guest of Harding September 26 at which game Harding's first victory of the season was scored. Many games were played at night under the newly installed flood-lights. The managers, John Wilhelm, jack Creviston, Vincent Wise, John Rhea, and james Andrews were invaluable to the squads and coaches. A group of cheerleaders were organized by Mr. Faust who taught them cheers and formations. Enthusiasm of spectators and squad was boosted high by this group and by the band under the direction of Mr. Homer Huffman. Richard Clarke and Lowell Jones led the- band. The season was ended at Mount Vernon, November 14. At Christmas time, the Hi-Y joined the crafts group of the Girl Reserves to give a party to the children of the Marion County Children's Home. One week-end in March, many of the Hi-Y members attended a state Hi-Y meeting in Mansfield. The Hi-Y, with the Girl Reserves, prepared the pre- Easter services which were held at the First Presbyter- ian Church, March 22-24. The Hi-Y carnival April 3 at the Y M C A was at- tended by many students. The feature of the evening was a stage show composed of twenty beautiful girls. All were Hi-Y members. At Christmas time, each group performed some worthy project. The crafts group united with the Hi-Y in giving a party to a group of children from the Marion County Children's Home. The Dramatic group presented a program for the Mother's Tea, February 14. The patriotic month of February was celebrated by a sport dance in the gymnasium. The decorations carried out a patriotic theme in red, white, and blue. The Hi-Y and Girl Reserves united to sponsor the pre-Easter services and the Easter sunrise service at the Presbyterian Church. The Edison gymnasium was the scene of the Girl Re- serve spring dance, May 1. A maypole was set up in the center of the floor. The pastel streamers of the pole formed a canopy. The incoming officers were installed May 13. Page 3 5 Page AIM-l-ll To earn a Girl Reserve ring, any Girl Reserve who has been a member of the club two years may join this group. This year, the members received a better understand- ing of the symbol on the ring by completing three guide posts. These were a perfect body, a keen mind, and a Christ-like spirit. These are symbolized by the three sides of the triangle on the ring. The circle en- closing the triangle represents the unbroken circle of friendship of Girl Reserves around the world. Meetings were held every two weeks at which the members reported their progress. Dorothy Peters was student sponsor. The rings were presented to the girls by Mrs. E. G. Seifert at the Central Christian Church, April 25. 36 MEMBERS : E 1 e a n o r Abelson, Bette Atkinson, Kath- ryn Atkinson, Dorothy Bailey, Edna Barger, Dorothy Bechtle, Lil- lian Cleveland, Mary Cook, Mae Dietsch, Carol Epley, J ane Farley, Betty Felty, H e l e n Glassmeyer, Marjorie Green, Mar- tha Ann Gorton, Idella Harruff, Donna Jane J a c o b s , Marguerite Jones, Kathleen Kerns, Evelyn Marks, Elizabeth Messenger, R u t h M c A d o W , Jeanne Postle, Irene Powell, Helen Reiger, Betty Roberts, Vir- ginia Rutherford, Pa- tricia Shank, Donna Ruth Sinning, Jean Swain, Virginia Thax- ton, Sara Ann Walsh, Eloise F raley. Page 39 Page 40 HE clear, cool days of Autumn H11 us with exhilaration as we rush about becoming readjusted at school. The leaves, which were green on the first day of school are soon changed to the beautiful fall colors. Then, the trees are bare, stripped of their beauty. Although that change does not occur rapidly but, rather, happens gradually, we are surprised to see the lirst snowfall. Sur- prised, yet happy, for Winter is now officially here. Winter opens new activities to us. Sports change. Football is left for the faster and more exciting basketball. Roller skates are packed away in the base- ment and ice skates brought out. Large snowmen with brooms in their arms are seen here and there. The temperature outdoors has fallen many degrees, but inside is warmth and feverish excitement of busy days. The winter activities are begun with a zest. WINTER SECTION I UNIORS EDISON BASKETBALL I ORGANIZATIONS DECEMBER TABUJARY EEBRUARY Page 44 JUNIOR HISTORY The Junior Class of Harding has been very active in extra curricular ac- tivities during their three years of High School. Page 51 Page 52 MONG the students in winter, basketball is supreme. On clear, cold eve- nings, many Harding students display loyalty and school spirit by fol- lowing the team. The juniors, that intermediate class, are being noticed now.- The sophomores have become acquainted to Harding and have lost their novel air. Thus it is that the juniors have a chance to prove their worth. The numerous organizations are in full swing. Their social activities have begun and students are rushed to attend the meetings and social functions. Edison junior High school has reorganized old clubs and formed new ones. With producing junior and sophomore plays, publishing the school newspaper, and attending clubs, the teachers and students were busily engaged. WINTER ACTIVITIES Page 54 BASKETBALL Coach Dewey N. Bohyer, working with a team that included only two lettermen, prepared the team for a strenuous season. The schedule included seventeen games. The 1936-37 basketball season was opened December 4 at the Steam Shovel Gymnasium with a victory over Upper San- dusky. The team traveled to Mt. Vernon to meet their first North Central Ohio League opponent of the season. They scored a victory which was an incentive that was strong enough to carry them to the semi-finals at Delaware. The junior varsity, coached by Bill Williams, promises good material for the coming year. The efficient senior manager, john Turner, was assisted by James Gast, Edward Hale, Nick jevas, and John Jay. Harding's basketball team won the consolation cup in the semi-finals at Delaware. X. wa Page THE QUIVER The production of a year book involves much pleasure combined with a quantity of work and worry. It is not prepared and published by one person but by the cooperation of many. This year's 'tQuiver was no exception. The Quiver staff met the problems as they arose and, with the aid of the journalism students, published this book. This year we have tried to bring you the un- usual. We have published an informal book to which you may turn as a reference book for your school year of 1936-37. 62 MEMBERS: Nlildred Zachman was chosen editor-in-chief with Mary Louise Hume as her assistant by Miss Lucile Foreman, faculty advisor. Assisting in the presenta- tion of the year book were the following: Richard Olewiler, advertising managerg Mr. John Gries, fac- ulty advertising managerg Frank Roberts, business managerg Mr. E. H. Shade, faculty business man- agerg John Wilhelm, sports editorg Josephine Ruth, photograph editorg and Dale Schmidt, circulation mana ager. As in the case of a year book, the weekly school publication carries many worries along with its joys. And, similarly, it cannot be produced by one person but through the combined efforts of many. The Her- ald staff is aided by the news staff composed of the journalism classes. The two editors, Eloise Coffman and Robert Wetzel, issued the paper alternately. Approximately '500 students received a copy of the Herald each Friday. Miss Foreman is faculty advisor. Page 71 Page 72 HE short, cold days of winter have been busily occupied with numerous and varied activities. These, of necessity, have been indoors, so, as the snow melts, the trees bud, and the tulips push through the ground, everyone longs to be outdoors in the warm Spring sunshine and enjoy the long evenings. Roller skating and bicycling are again very popular with the students and roadsters with the tops down or an antiquated model with the top removed is the chief mode of transportation. Sports change with the season. From bas- ketball, interests turn to track, baseball, bowling, and golf. During the Spring, the school plays are produced. The production staffs and casts spend many long and weary hours preparing the plays. They are well repaid when the first curtaini' goes up and the audience remains fascinated during their performance. Spring not only brings reminders of its presence in the Howers and trees but cameras are as numerous as any of these. Fellow students take snaps of classmates and the school as a permanent reminder of days that were filled with pleasant memories. The seniors have been prparing for this Spring all during the Fall and Win- ter. This is the season that they have waited for but with its arrival they are not enthusiastic to leave their Alma Mater as they realize they are at the open- ing of a new life. No occasion will ever bring this class together as the Seniors of Harding High School, Class of 1937. SENIOR CLASS SONG fTune-The Stein Songj Glory to old Harding days, Each a bright spot shall be: Brightening as the years go by, Burned deeply in our memory. When our darkest days shall come, And we crave a bit of heaven, just fly back on memory's wings, And live again fond '37. We must leave, we must part, The world sends a call, each must do his part, u We will strive, We will fight, Let each face the goal with courageous heart. Hearts to dare, hearts to do, Inspired by noble faculty, We will climb, we will lift Harding High to her proud destiny. Fortune, fill our every cup, Bid happy voices ring, Praises to old Harding High The proudest class shall ever sing. Fast the fleeting happy hours, And victories o'er and o'er,g A thousand joys we've packed away In recol1ection's finest store. . -Annabelle Leliiier. Page 91 .il DRAMA SENIOR PLAY Yes, Your Majesty, accompanied by a curtsey or a bow, became the natural actions of many seniors during the last few weeks Of March.
