In a ball-gamo crowd. at a social club ban- quet, in a close-knit circle of friends, or with an intimate companixm we find ourselves in an ex- change. Some situations. such as those mentioned, are largely a matter of choosing to associate. Others are bmught upon us by uur necessary activities in school h in class. at work, or at the coin-o-mat. All of these social situations bring out some Change in our perspective. A few experiences stand out as having momentous effect on the di- rection of our lives1 but many slip by with hardly a ripple in our consciousness. The impressions from different situations acemnulate and add to the overall picture of our personalities until grad- ually we become different people1 largely as a result of knowing and associating with others. 4
