Crnom as president. After two years, Arkansas Christian College merged with Harper College, a junior college in Harper, Kansasa becoming a soilinr college with J. N. Armstrong as president and changing the name to Harding College in memnry of J. A. Harding. In the summer of 1954 Harding College moved from Morriltun tn Searcy. Upon the re- tirement of President Armstrong in 1936, Dr. George S. Benson returned from China and assumed the presidency. Despite increasing en- rollment the college was stnlggling under a large indebtedness. Dr. Benson immediately be- gan working on the fiscal conditions; on Thanks- giving Day, 1939, the mortgage was burned. On March 26. 1.0134a Harding,r College was ac- credited by the North Central Association of COL leges :1an Socunrlary Schools. oday Harding College has an ex- cellent plant consisting of twenty-six modem educational buildings. The assets of the college are 3111000900 which includes 5355001000 in endowment. The Harding farulty numbers 211? proximately eightyiive and the, student body has reached one thousand. Statistical data, l'mvveven cannot reveal the basic importance of Harding College because it transcends material values. Its purpose is to give students an education of high quality which will lead to an understanding and a philosophy of life consistent with Christian ideals. Each student is given an oplmrtlmity to get a broad educational harkgmunri through the carefully planned core of general education courses and to develop a strong1 motivating faith through the study of the Bible each semester. A student may choose his major from among twenty-two areas. The School of American Studies trains capable students for leadership careers in business, pub- lic life and education. Harding College offers graduate work leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching; which is also accredited.
