'Y Arr. Z ' i Q it is ,,,3i,E,! iw SPRING FEVER Nearing the middle of March of last year, a change came over Harding Academy students. Some ignored their studies and were content to gaze out of classroom windows. Others became quite talkative, about matters other than school subjects, of course, When the three o'clock bell rang, the hall became alive with shouts and shuffling feet. All of the above are not characteristics of the usual winter blahs. Something was different, there was a buzz in the air. Alas, it was the disease all teachers dread: Spring Fever. As temperatures soared into the oO's and 70's during the day, wool sweaters were exchanged for light jackets. The tradition of escaping from the gym-cafeteria was once again revived. Daily during lunch period, students swarmed to the great outdoors to soak up some sun and breathe a little fresh air. Radios blared-temporarily, of course Cwe all know whyb. Teachers were constantly plagued with Please let us go outside and Skip the lesson just for today, please. All of these requests were overruled and students remained trapped inside. The seniors were given parole on May 17. After graduation, a large number of ex-seniors headed for the white sands of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. The rest of the school, from juniors on down, hung around for two weeks longer, taking exciting and mentally challenging semester exams, always a favorite of the entire student body. Semester exams signify the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. There are many ways one may spend his vacation. Here are a few: 1. Working Calways a favorite? is a well-chosen pastime for the summer. Saving for that new Z-28 is a worthwhile goal. 2. Hanging around is what a majority of Harding students do. Catching up on the soaps, getting some rays, and hanging out at McDonald's are some of the favorites. 3. Some of the students are quite industrious. They spend their summers in eager anticipation of the coming school year. They stock up on their pencils and notebook paper when on sale at Fred's. These students also enjoy studying the complex process of photosynthesis. All good things must come to an end. One receives a copy of his schedule in the mail, a tell-tale sign of that dreaded day: the day of speeches, alias the first day of school. Sears begins its back-to-school sale and K-mart overstocks its shelves with lunch boxes and the fat first-grader pencils. Believe it or not, school has rolled around again. Oh, where has the summer gone? 1. SOME students ga on vacation during the summer. This picture was taken while a student was on vacation in the Smokey Mountains, near Gatlinburg. 2. KEN MILLER gazes intently at his fellow classmates at the banquet last year. 3. LARRY SISSON struggles to throw the shot put. Spring Fever 19
