DEDICATION Dr. James Landes First Baptist Church Wichita Falls, Texas March 3, 1963 James H. Landes Day Dr. Landes joined the ranks at HSU in 1963. He served here for three years when he accepted a call to pastor the First Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama. Dedication Dr. and Mrs. James Landes CAMPUS LIFE CONVOCATION Dr. Kenneth Ashworth challenged HSU students to consider whether their lives would make any difference in the world as he spoke at HSU’s Fall Convocation. Ashworth, a strong supporter of private higher education, recalled events from the United States’ Foun- ding Fathers to support his arguments for freedom of expression through Christian higher education. Styles, vice presi- dent for university relations and development wrapped up a seat on the Abilene school board while sociology pro- fessor Dr. Julian Bridges began a sting on the Abilene city council. Above, Greg Wilson chats with Dr. Bridges and Dr. Darnell concerning a new scholarship award funded by Wilson. The Wilson Award will be given to outstanding psychology and sociology students. . . . AND CONCERN IMMERSED IN REFLECTIONS Finally, Brethren . At a formal level, this book has already been dedicated. On a more casual note, I’d like to dedicate at least this page to Linda. She is a rare individual, and, were it not for her en- couragement and support, I doubt if I would have made it even halfway. There are some other folks who need thanking, too. Thanks to: My Room for the music, Keith for all the weird weekends in Canyon; Randy for staying on my back; Craig for conti- nuing to support me; Shannon for listening; Nix Hall for giving me a place to stash my stuff; Wallbanger for knocking the pictures down; the Planters for letting me pick on them; C.A. for the anxiety attacks; Palmer for making me feel like I have a full head of hair; Dr. Knight for the tools; Dr. Neely for the good word; Dr. Spencer for preaching; Steve for being a pastor and a friend; and Leaslie, my secret admirer, for all her help. And thank you for being uniquely you. LOSING CONTACT And A Few Out of Place Scenes From HOLLYWOOD PROFILES HSU PRESIDENT Dr. Jesse Conrad Fletcher ADMINISTRATIVE EMERITI Dr. Elwin L. Skiles Chancellor CHANCELLOR In 1978, Dr. Elwin L. Skiles was named the first chancellor of Hardin- Simmons University after serving as the University’s 11th president from 1966 to 1977. The office of chancellor is primarily responsible for matters of development and fund raising. The chancellor also functions in public relations, student recruitment, alumni affairs, denominational rela- tions, and related functions. As with all positions of responsibility at HSU, the chancellor is responsible to the president and board of trustees. EMERITUS The emeritus designation can be conferred upon former administrators upon retirement from Hardin- Simmons University. Emeritus status allows an individual to keep a former title after his or her retirement. Although this title is honorary in nature, it is reserved for a select few whose dedication and devo- tion to the University warrants special recognition. Only a few of the many who will serve this fine institution will ever hold this coveted title. It is fitting for such dedicated ser- vants of the University to be recog- nized here in the Bronco as an inspira- tion to the students of today and the UNIVERSITY STRUCTURE UNIVERSITY RELATIONS DEVELOPMENT Financial Affairs Mr. Billy Tucker Mr. David Stovall Mr. Greg Scales Director of the Computer Center Operations — Computer Center STUDENT AFFAIRS Athletic Director Head Basketball Coach Mr. Dale Pond Miss Kathy Banks I.
