The weekend was filled with activities such as the traditional assembly, teas, a barbecue luncheon and the All School ... and Sing Parents Day concluded with the All School Sing which was sponsored by the School of Music, Phi Mu Alpha, and Sigma Alpha lota. Entries in this event were Kappa Phi Omega — “A Tribute to the Beach Boys,” Phi Phi Phi — “They’re Playing Our Song — Broadway Hits, Freshman Class — “Barnyard Bash — Cowboy Western Salute, Alpha Phi Omega — Return to Paradise,” Delta — “Annie Get Your Gun.” Master of Ceremonies for this year's program was Buddy Griffin, his antics, and his banjo. The Moody Center Planning Committee sponsors special events throughout the school year and the summer for HSU students. Some of these events include a canoe trip during the summer, and a snow ski trip during the Christmas break. Other events held during the school year included such things as a potato dinner snack, a banana split break after home basketball games and MCPC movies. ... Homecoming this year took place February 27- 28th. The weekend was filled with such activities as reunions, teas, a barbeque, a HSU Cowboy game and “The Rainmaker.” Above: Student Congress members Robin Ribble and Linda Blakeley welcome HSU visitors to campus. ANTIGONE n n FOUNDERS DAY Founders Day had special significance this year as it occasioned the 90th anniversary of the founding of Hardin-Simmons University. The day was spent enjoying good food, entertainment and fellowship. An attempt was made to recreate the celebration held some nine decades before to dignify the laying of a cornerstone on the first HSU building. Certainly it was a day that will long be remembered by those in attendance. Over 100 students went to Indiana during Spring Break. There were 22 revival teams and two fine arts teams. The 22 teams went to several churches, rest homes and worked with children. Above: HSU musical ensemble “Singers Ho” entertains during chapel. The group is directed by Dr. J. G. of the Department of Music Education and Church Music. The Baptist Student Union sponsored a mission trip during the Christmas vacation. The project was in Abilene this year and it was called the Jerusalem Project. The students worked and provided services for the people and churches of Abilene and included working at the Abilene State School chapel, painting and working with area churches, teaching Vacation Bible School, working with the older people of the community and fellowships. This mission provided services, fellowship and love to people in our own community. ABILENE Rupert N. Richardson . National Phonathon Dr. Rupert Richardson makes the first phone call to mark the beginning of the second Rupert N. Richardson National Phonathon in April. The endeavor was again very successful in its attempt to raise money for the HSU Annual Fund. MILESTONE 90 Last April a reception was held in Ellis Center to celebrate the 90th birthday of Dr. Rupert N. Richard- son. After receiving congratulations from Dr. Fletcher (above), Dr. Richardson welcomed HSU family members and other friends from the community. The Keeter Award Kyle Keeter, a descendant of John J. Keeter for whom the Keeter award is named, talks to this year's award winner, Mrs. Virginia Connally. The Keeter Award is given each year to an alumnus or ex-student of Hardin-Simmons who has con- tributed significantly in his or her field of endeavor toward the betterment of the university or has rendered the greatest service directly or indirectly, to the university. The award is named for John J. Keeter Jr., an HSU student who gave his life for his country during World War II. This year’s award was given to Virginia Connally during the homecoming festivities. Mrs. Connally is a distinguished local medical doctor and widow of an Abilene oil man J. Ed Connally. She is known profes- sionally as Dr. Virginia Boyd; an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. Mrs. Connally graduated from HSU in 1933. She later continued her studies at Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans and returned to Abilene upon completion of her M.D. in 1937. In 1977 she was elected to the HSU board, a position she still holds. In 1980 the Connally Endowed Professorship of Missions was established, funded by a gift from Mrs. Connally. She was also selected as one of the three outstanding alumni for the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1977. 111 CTICN CAKN1VAL All School Election 1981-82 Student Association Executive Officers President Paul Gomez Vice-President Kimber Whitaker Business Manager Greg Solomon Secretary Candy Thweatt Congressmen-at-Large Annette Layman Randy Thompson Despite inclement weather, the Election Carnival was as exciting as a three-ring-circus. Z %. cmct TKnA.tyeMc 'Pletckvi Chancellor In 1978, Dr. Elwin L Skiles was named the first chancellor of Hardin- Simmons University after serving as the University’s 11th president from 1966 to 1977. The office of chancellor is primarily responsible for matters of development and fund raising. The chancellor also func- tions in public relations, stu- dent recruitment, alumni af- fairs, denominational rela- tions, and related functions. As with all positions of responsibility at HSU, the EMERITUS The emeritus designation can be conferred upon former ad- ministrators upon retirement from Hardin-Simmons University. Emeritus status allows an in- dividual to keep a former title after his or her retirement. Although this title is honorary in nature, it is reserved for a select few whose dedication and devotion to the University warrants special recognition. Only a few of the many who will serve this fine in- stitution will ever hold this coveted title. It is fitting for such dedicated ser- vants of the University to be recognized here in the Bronco as an inspiration to the students of to- day and the leaders of tomorrow. HSU WINS TAAC CHAMPIONSHIP The Cowboy Soccer Team repeated this year as the champions of the Trans America Athletic Conference. This was a welcomed joy to end a season that found the team with a record of 8-8-1. The schedule was packed with nationally ranked teams and Hardin- Simmons upheld the winning tradition. This season saw the advent of a new coach, Sam Parham. Coach Parham Came from Dallas Baptist College to lead the Cowboys to their second consecutive conference champion- ship. Often the task of being mediator between students and administration seemed to be an awesome job, yet through the many programs and commit- tees, they got much accomplished for the students. One of the largest and strongest committees turned out to be the Food Committee. By taking the students suggestions to John Parkinson, the cafeteria director, many advances were made toward better food service. However, the other commitees kept up the work at their jobs also. In the fall before the election, the current political issues were brought on campus by Congress. The Book Exchange was established to help students save money on books. Congress also took charge of elections, the rodeo, Homecoming and Queen’s Corona- tion. The largest money-making project was the cake factory. Riggs. Kevin Carson. Dusty Radabaugh, Keith Kuciter. FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a group of athletes and other interested students who are committed to Chris- tian principles. Their goal was to understand the meaning of Jesus Christ in their lives and to share in fellowship, commitment and victory through Him. Their theme for the year was “Share the Victory” with scripture reference to ICor. 15:57. They held weekly meetings on Wednesday nights where there were speakers, games and fellowship. The organization was active in extra activities also. As a money making project, they held an all-night basketball game with McMurry University. In January, some of the members attended the state convention in Houston at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The FCA also held a college FCA retreat on the campus for surrounding university groups. Their main method of achieving this was through putting on the HSU Rodeo April 23-25. The club members were in charge of putting the program together and taking care of all the minor but necessary jobs such as loading calves and steers in the chutes and taking the rigging off the horses and bulls. Even through the rainy weather, the Rodeo was a big success. It was highlighted each night with the Six White Horses per- forming before the show and the Cowboy band continually adding their festive spirit to the action.
