I hope this yearbook will wrap up very special events and very cherished memories for you within its panoramic recapturing of a year in the life of Hardin-Simmons University and its largest student body in over thirty years. Such years in the lives of individuals or, for that matter, in that of institutions, is often a kaleidoscope of victories and setbacks, pluses and minuses, steps forward and steps backward. But since college is an experience of growth, it is often the difficulty side of the ledger that provides the greatest advance, and in retrospect it can provide some meaningful nostalgia and even a few chuckles. For each of you who made up the student body during this outstanding year in the life of HSU, I want to say thank you and best wishes for the years ahead. I know the friendships you made will endure even as the growth years will become the foundation for your own future and will, in this sense, also endure. The institution itself had that kind of year. In some ways it was the fruit of a time of planting and a time of cultivation and, therefore, a welcome harvest. Academic reorganizations and the addition of new faculty strengthened the basic process immeasurably and was undoubtedly responsible for attracting so many top-flight students. Raised admission standards made it possible to have a more ambitious orogram than at any other time in the school's history. Major steps forward in the university's unique Science Research Center in the areas of allergy testing and brucelosis control probably mirrored the kinds of breakthrough and achievement that happened in individual lives. A strong athletic program that dominated its peers in some sports and suffered at their hands in others reflected the competitive spirit of the school and its desire to compete at the top levels of everything it does. 3 Solid Christian commitment emerged in life styles, Christian voca- tional choices, missionary enterprises, Bible studies and personal growth. i good year at Hardin-Simmons University. Freshman Tom Kerr led the team in scoring (11.6 points) and rebounding (7.5). Juco transfer David Jones turned in a great second half of the year and won the team's Most Valuable Player award. Earl Powell won the W. W.
