As the years passed, other groups as the Chafing Dish Club with its flower—the Califlower, 13 Mysteries, Happy Go Lucky, Big Mouth, Simmons Square Table, Simmons Band, and Country Clubs, have come and gone; but each has had a definite influence on the lives of the individuals who be- longed to them.. The publications began in 1902 with the Baptist, which was the weekly paper of Simmons College. In 1907 the first Bronco and Cor- ral were published. The Western Evangel became the weekly periodical in 1907, and the Brand became its replacement in 1917. Today unifying organizations on campus is the Stu- dent Senate which was begun in about 1915 as the Student Council. As far back as 1902 Simmons College was participating in football, bas- ketball and track. By 1906 both boys and girls were playing tennis at Simmons College. In 1908-09 girls began to play basketball, and the same year the pennant. During the 1930's H-SU was a member of Texas Inter-Collegiate Conference and later be- came a member of the Border Conference. In 1963 the school became a member of Texas Athletic Con- ference, which disbanded in 1964. Austin at 1958, when the Cowboys whipped Tulsa. The follow- identical score, when the University of Southwestern Louisiana turned the trick at Lafayette, 16-6. Return- ing to Abilene, the Cowboys played their first game of the season here before a homecoming crowd of more than 12,000. The opponent, cross-town rival Abilene Christian College, walked off with a 21-7 verdict. In the season's fourth game at Wichita, Kan., H-SU dropped a heart-breaking contest by a 26-12 score. However, it remained for New Mexico State termination of the Cowboys. When the game was over, the Pokes left Las Cruces with an astounding 41-6 victory—an upset of tremendous proportions. Back in Abilene, the Pokes faced another local foe, McMurry College. The Cowboys dropped their sec- ACC had defeated the Cowboys. Traveling to San Antonio the Pokes met the Trinity University Tigers in a mud battle. Neither team could score on a gridiron turned into a quagmire by a driving rain storm. North Texas State University edged the Cow- boys 18-12 at Denton Nov. 16 and the stage was set for the game against Arlington State College at Ar- lington, Nov. 23. However, the assassination of Presir dent Kennedy in Dallas caused cancellation of the game and the Cowboys closed out the season here Nov. 30 against the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets. The Brownwood team emerged with a 16-7 victory be- fore a sparse crowd during the Thanksgiving holiday period. Despite the 2-6-1 record of the eleven during the gridiron season, faithful followers continued to the season against heavily favored Wichita, the Poke fortunes seemed to sink. Several games were lost because of breaks or the lack of them. Offici- ating at times seemed to leave something to be desired. Particularly disappointing was the loss to Howard Payne, since the Cowboys were favored to the pair of wins and the Trinity tie, the Cowboys H-SU mustered three victories and dropped seven games. Including the 1963 season, Hardin-Simmons football teams have played 466 games. Even with the losing seasons of the past five years, Poke elevens have won 240 games, lost 191 and tied 35. Much of the competition was against football powers of the nation. SEASON’S RECORD H-SU Opponent Score 16 Stephen F.
