DR. WILLIAM S. MATHIS DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC In Memoriam In Memoriam A Time To Grow The university campus is an ever - changing thing. With every day the rains of new experiences, new per- sonalities, and new ideas fall upon its well - worn ground. And the objects about us are steeped in tradition: the sights we see each day have been looked upon for decades by many before us. Out activities take place in locations familiar to us; inside walls that do not seem to change at all. But let us not forget that what we see and hear is not dependent on what is put before us; it is rather dependent on who we are that look and listen. I may walk within the same walls where I walked before, but today I am a different person from the one who came here yesterday. ktSaff We study today in the same class- room where we studied yesterday; but we are new persons in old surround- ings, and we perceive them differently if our study bears the fruit of learning. And so there come times when the patterns we see are confused and vague, although we have seen them often before, and clearly. Let it not make us fearful when the familiar becomes difficult to comprehend, Let it rather make us to be inspired, to strive for the fringes of our understanding. Let us be anxious to shed the leaves of last summer and send our roots deep within ourselves to find the generation of the leaves of next spring. Let us then be- come the ever-changing thing that is the university. Ancient words, but true ones, say, There is a time to sow, and a time to reap. We have sown the seeds of study and preparation; before we can reap t h e harvest of fulfillment and knowledge, we must allow for our- selves ...
