Hardin-Simmons completed its varsity basketball sched- ule with 14 wins and 12 losses. In Border conference play the Cowboys had a 3-7 record. Though the Cowboys’ record was better than last year’s 11-14, pre-season expectations had the Cowboys much higher than materialized. The Border Conference basketball title was thrown into a three-way tie between New Mexico State, Arizona State, and Texas Western. The Cowboys’ season opened December 2, 1958, at Rose Field House in a game with Eastern New Mexico that went into an overtime. The Pokes had six games to go into an overtime and came out victor in 4 of them. Twelve of the 24 games were decided by six or less points. The Cowboys won six of these. They averaged 67.9 points per game, while their opponents averaged 67.4. On the home court, the Pokes lost only one game. Arizona broke the spell with an 80-78 victory. Doyle Edmiston came to the foreground in individual statistics with his record-breaking rebound ability. Edmiston has played for the Cowboys for three years. He is the Border Conference’s leading rebounder with 431 and ranks in the top 20 rebounders in N.C.A.A. schools. This 43 1 makes him the top rebounder in Cowboy history. He set a one-game record of 3 1 rebounds in the game against West Texas. Ick” took top scoring honors with 395 points. In the free throw department, a close race between Arden and Groom found Arden with 73.6 while Groom had 73.59. Seniors who donned their purple and gold for the last time were Robert Groom, Doyle Edmiston, Art Travis, Robert Ryan, and Carl Knight. KNIGHT TRAVIS ROBERT RYAN V I Tennis Team Hardin-Simmons.
