A ook THE UNIVERSITY Tomorrow's Challange Demands Guidance. The experience of enlightened men and women furnishes the comprehension we need to build surely and well. With- out their patient, controlling hand, reaching from yesterday to tomorrow, we would have no common bond with the heritage that belongs to morning. 3 O Zhe President’s Message This, the fifty-fifth year, is the busiest that Hardin-Simmons has ever known. Life is not dull with a huge enrollment, a college calendar packed with events, and a big building program. We would not have it otherwise. Today is ours; today the Uni- versity is serving more people than ever before. Today we crowd its halls and cam- pus, happy to have a part in such activity. The things we do today prepare us for greater usefulness tomorrow. The growth of today is a token of even greater developments tomorrow. People who have given much thought to the future predict that within a decade three million students will be enrolled in the colleges of America. Hardin-Simmons must have its share of these young people and serve them well. The task ahead is great and calls for the united efforts of all friends. In bidding adieu to the class of 1948, we thank you for the cooperant spirit you have shown throughout our years together. We shall cherish our memories of you and follow your careers with interest, hoping that your Alma Mater will ever have a generous share of your affections. RUPERT N. Woodson, Line Coach Murray Evans, and Backfield Coach Wesley Bradshaw, guided the Cowboys to a runner-up position in the Border Conference and a 53 to 0 Harbor Bowl victory over San Diego State. Woodson, in his fourth year as head mentor, again produced a power- ful Cowboy eleven that will be remembered as a credit to Hardin-Simmons. Able assistance from Evans and Bradshaw was an important factor in the well-rounded coaching job done in 1947. A1 Milch, former Cowboy guard, was added to the coaching staff at mid-term as head track and freshman football coach. YELL LEADERS Maewyn Bailey, Bob Moore, Leroy Hall, Bob Erwin, Pat McMinn The school spirit which is so vital to all of our athletics is led and directed by the yell leaders. The yell leaders are chosen by popular election each year. They are respon- sible for the calling of pep rallies, conducting the rallies, and guiding the spirit of the student body at various contests in which Hardin-Simmons participates. Leroy Hall held the major role as senior yell leader, assisted by Bob Erwin, junior; Maewyn Bailey, sophomore; Bob Moore and Pat McMinn, yell leaders at large. The accomplishments of the yell leaders were outstanding and were obtained by no small amount of effort. They are due the praise of composing the twelfth man in the football game, the sixth man in the basketball game, and the extra man in any other Unifying school spirit is no small task. It is not easy, as any one of the leaders will tell you, and recognition for valuable and helpful service should be given to the deserving. It is important to keep the student body in the right spirit and behind the Cowboys in any endeavor, win or lose. Guided by Wesley Bradshaw, the Cowboy B eleven met San Angelo Junior College in San Angelo October 24 and the Texas Tech reserves on Parramore Field Armistice day. Playing one of the top-flight Junior College elevens in the Southwest, the Cowboys found the going tough in San Angelo. The Rams got off to a fast start by striking for a touchdown in the first period and accounted for two more in the second period to defeat the Hardin- Simmons reserves 20 to 7. Verne Stamper, freshman from Ysleta, raced 40 yards for the Hardin-Simmons touchdown in the second quarter. Although striking inside the 10-yard marker repeatedly during the first half, the Cow- boy reserves never managed to cross the double stripe as the Texas Tech reserves man- aged a 0 to 0 deadlock in an Armistice afternoon game on Hardin-Simmons' Parramore field.
