We follow- ed them into a land of blood and Eire and snow, up to the front to do and to die for the eternal right. We read of Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Verdun, saw 'them rout the Prussian Guard at Bel- leau Woods Watched them cross the Rhine, hailed them-Conquer ors! The old order changes. Our boys return to us, Americans, truer than ever, but citizens of the World. We hail the ships that bring them back to us with out- stretched hands. Welcome, more than Welcome! Welcome home again. X ,,N Eighteen ,2- THE NEW SCIENCE BUILDING A Resume and a Propheey' IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII OUR YEARS have passed, the greatest four years of our lives thus far, and the class of Nineteen comes to its gradua- tion. Our feelings present a paradox. We are glad to go and seek a place of service and yet there steals from each heart a sigh when we think of leaving the beloved scenes and associations of our Alma Mater. We find here a something, an indefinable, in- vincible something that shall shape and flavor our lives a.nd,: we hope, give distinction and character to our class. As Seniors weuhave found that the greatest thing about Simmons College is not her cam- pus, not her faculty, not her ' student body, but her spirit. The traditions, legends, and .memories clustering about the Old College campus seem to have linked themselves with the friendliness and optimism of the West to form an individuality, a college spirit that carries with it the hall-mark of its own excellence. On the horizon of a not too distant future we see the dawn of a new day for our Alma Mater. Simmons is to be a university. As she grows so shall her spirit. The purple and the gold shall take on added meaning. The purple dawning of each new sun shall be but the prophesy of a bigger and grander Simmons ere the gold of evening casts its spell over light-hearted students strolling on the campus beautiful. e T Nineteen Twenty To Simmons Students Everywhere OUR ALMA MATER has Wrought and served for more than a quarter of a century. You have seen her grow from a struggling Academy to a standard- A-1 institution, ranking in numbers and literary merit with the best institutions of the Southland. I-Ier sons and daughters are found in every field of legitimate endeavor, in both civil and military pursuits, around the world. The phenomenal growth, spirit, and influence of Simmons Col- lege is in a large measure due to her noble sons and daughters, who have uniformly borne the Simmons 'cbrandn that has become so manifest Wheresoever duty has 'called them. lt is your province to live and serve in the greatest age that has ever co.me to the peoples of the earth. These are times that try menis souls and challenge them to their highest in efficiency and best in service. I am expressing the hope that no Worthy World task shall come to any of you and you not prove morally and in- tellectually eqnal to it. The eyes of thousands of men and Women are upon you, and your Alma Mater believes in you to the last limit. Your College is facing the future with an optimism and a con- fidence peculiar to her past and commensurate with the section in which she is located and the age of which she is a potential part. I am calling upon you to lend yourselves in time, money, and co- oper-aiit sympathy to the tasks' now devolving upon those of us in authority to make the Old Scl1ool ' measure up in equipment, in- fluence, and service to its noble founder, and to Him who is the author of Christian ideals that makes culture Worthwhile. I congratulate the outgoing Senior Class on its opportunity to do the big things for its Alma Mater and the World. May no Sim- mons student ever be satisfied to do the little thing. I call upon you for your best and I confidently feel that only your best will satisfy tw you. JEFFERSON DAVIS SANDEFER, Ph.B., LL.D. He is still small in statue but through his many desirable traits he has grown quite large in the estimation of his fellow students. Strong in personality, sound in judgment, and keen in wit, he has won the confidence and esteem of his fellows. He has always shown great interest in all college activities. Though not a star in athletics he has taken part in the building of the teams by working faithfully with the scrubs, He has led in the work of his society. He was the i'PreXy'l of the Seniors and lcd them boldly and confidently into their endeavors always attaining success. His success in college bespeaks for him a success in the world. We are not prepared to speculate on his field of endeavor but our knowledge of Ryce makes us confident that he will succeed. Realizing the value and incentive given to literary effort by some sort of recognition the student body adopted a plan whereby a letter, known as the Literary S , is awarded to those who at- tain distinction along these lines. The significance of this letter is very similar to that of the Athletic S Won by a seasons playing on one of the College athletic teams. Five students won this letter during the 1918-19 session. The local Press Club is a member of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. At the meeting of the Association this year Simmons representatives Won one first place and two second places. The T. I. P. A. meets on the home campus-in 1920. Extensive plans for the enlargement and entertainment of the Association are :il-. ready under consideration. V 4, V .,.-A At the very time when, under normal conditions, the Simmons lads would have been stiffening their shoulders for a gridiron battle they were rubbing them sore with government rifles prepara- tory to a fling with the Boche. The requirements of the government were such as to make it very hard for any athletic team to leave their respective military posts, especially teams playing with col- leges rather distant from the educational centers of the state. Col- lege students, like the College athletes were bending their efforts for service and Uncle Sam, hence a Weak, though fighting team up- held the honors of Simmons on the gridiron during the past school year. Wlieii Coach Martin called for first practice about forty men reported, most of these green in the art of the game. Cole, Collins and McAllister were the only three Simmons letter men to appear Finley, a wearer of the T from Trinity U. came as a welcome addition. After a few days practice an intra-company game be- tween Company I and Company II of the Simmons Si. A. T. C. was played. The result was victory for Company I by a score of 2.5-12. There were only two inter-collegiate games, one with Howard Payne at Brownwood, and one with Meridian College on the local field. One Hundred Forty-nine The Game at Brownwood On the eleventh of November the Cowboy eleven went to Brownwood to play Howard Payne College. This game marked the initiation to the grid-iron for several wearers of the Purple. The day was raw and the field at Brownwood was hard. The boys fought well for new recruits but met defeat 26-7. In this game several of the men were injured, among them Capt. Cole, who frac- tured his shoulder, and Finley, who sustained a broken hand. This put two of the letter men out of the game for the rest of the sea- son. Following is the line-up for this game: 1 Watson ............... Center Kennedy --- --- L. G. Smith .... --- L. T. Half The Meridian Game On Saturday Nov. 23, Meridian College came to Simmons. Our crippled team, with inexperienced men in responsible places, were unable to take the long end of the score. A steady mist was fall- ing during the entire game. The Cowboys outplayed the visitors in the last half but came off the muddy field with the score 32-12 against them. Six old men, Payne, Bradley, Cole, Robinson, McDonald, and Barkley were back on the court and tossing goals with greater accuracy and team work than ever before. This neucleus for a winning five was augmented by Mansell, the big center from Artesia, and Billy White- sides, one of the fastest men ever to appear on a local court. Coach Martin labored persistently. The whole student body and the team held out fond hopes for another state championship. The season opened with an easy victory over the spunky A. C. C. four to one. Then came Baylor Medical with one of the best teams team. John Tarleton suffered defeat in two games by a margin of in the state. The defenders of the Purple and Gold carried off the honors in both of the games with the doctors. Here the season ended-just as the local five were rounding out into championship form. A trip had been scheduled but so many of the games were called off that the college authorities deemed it impracticable for thefteam to go all the way to Austin for the remaining game with State. He ought to make a. strong man on the team for three more years. Winters came to Simmons as a Fresh- man this year. He had been playing in- field for John Tarleton. Coach Green placed him in the outfield and it was found that he did his best work there Great things are expected of him in the future. Brad never came out of a game with- out a hit to his credit. His batting average was the highest on the team. This was his third year on second. He covered his sack like a professional. Next year may find Brad in the league. Snooksf' saw service in the left sector last year. All balls coming in his direc, tion were his regardless of holes and bumps that he had to go over in order to get under them. The oulloclq for the year was about as cheerful as the thoughts of a sea- sick soldier. Mars, the insatiable, had claimed the genius of the school leaving no semblance of the old-time pep. Dire threats from the faculty told us that our graduation was endangered if we cut classes. The photographer sowed ihe old school down with the information that the whole thing was going broke. Cut down expensesfi urged the business manager. Shoot us the dope, came in every letter from the engraving company. Hlllore copy,'? skrieked the printer-and all the time we were cutting class, posing girls for the beauty section or daubing paste on a picture of 4'Dam-lt'l. As a last straw the busi- ness manager took to the field as college evangelist leaving us with a stack of copy six feet high and a three thousand dollar debt. VVe hung on.
