LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA GIFT OF DIVISION OF EXTENSION Returned Tby Department Lb 1501 XS1 H3 last 219858 0 ? jHEUBRA®9 ?V m U DEDICATION In appreciation of their help to us in this and former years, we, the seniors of 1937 dedicate this, the third edition of “The Echo” to our parents. ' IaC K I Critz High School began in a one room log building about 1890. Later this building was replaced by a frakne structure. In 1913 and 1914 a four room brick building was erected to replace the old one. Within three years it became necessary to increase the size of this building to eight rodms. During 1920-1921 a four story brick structure was erected. This building serves as a dormitory for the girls, and provides class rooms for Home Economics, Commercial Training, and Science. The Boys Dormitory was erected in 1927 by Mr. William N. Rey¬ nolds in honor of his father, Hardin William Reynolds. The first floor of this building is occupied by the Department of Agriculture, the second floor is an auditorium seating approximately six hundred peo¬ ple. The third floor serves as a boys dormitory and faculty apartments. A new high school building is under construction which will pro¬ vide a large library and four class rooms. When the bell rang they filed into the building to see what would happen. To our surprise and best ad. vantage, we were placed under the resolute direction of 3Iiss 3Iaggie Joyce. We were full of fun and mischief, so it took Miss Joyce some time to make us realize what was before us. During this year the freshmen and sophomores went on a picnic to the old Critz Mill. As the year rolled on quite a few dropped out. Only twenty three remained at the end of the year. After an enjoyable vacation, we again started a step further to¬ ward our destination. Due to death and other misfortunes our number was reduced to eighteen. This time we were placed under the super, vision of 3Iiss Martha Anthony. We were beginning to learn what our high school work meant to us. We were glad to welcome another va¬ cation and think of ourselves as juniors. After another merry vacation we returned to gain more knowledge of this world and its ways. We, eighteen in number, were directed by 3Ir. Fred Price. Jolly juniors, we were. We won the honor of being the most well behaved class in school. The happiest event of the year was the Junior-Senior Picnic given at 3Irs. Tompkins’ spring. As the term came to a close, we realized that we would soon enter the role of dignified seniors. As we entered the school doors for our senior year, we realized what was before us. Failing to feel the dignity which is rightfully ours, we struggled forward with 3Iiss Mary Lee Martin as our home room teacher. The highlights of the year were the organization of the class and the exciting moment when our rings came. Then came “Bashful 3Ir. Bobbs,” the senior play. Afterwards the juniors enter¬ tained the seniors with a banquet at Tuck’s Palm Room. Last came our diplomas which were received amid a shower of tears. Just Imagine The personae oi this play portray the 11. R. M. S. Seniors of 19o in the character roles they will probably be fulfilling in 1947. Alumni Association “A school is what its former students make it.” TO THE H. R. M. S. SENIORS: This year marks the tenth anniversary of our alumni association. We are happy to state at this time that we have over two hundred active members and that we are still living up to the ideals set forth by the organizer of our association, Mr. Carnet B. Cox. Each year we have met for the alumni banquet and the annual business meeting. We have made gifts to the school amounting to several hundred dollars and we have kept in touch with our members through correspondence. The group has stood by the principals and other officials when they needed the help of the association. Most of the members have worked hard to nipke our school one of the best in the State. It is our wish that every senior of H. R. M. S. will join this loyal band and help us to snake this association grow.
