Lady Hawks Basketball Has Outstanding Year The Lady Hawks had another tremendous season as they won thirty-one games against only six setbacks. Most importantly, they advanced into the state playoffs for the third consecutive year before being knocked off in regionals by tit ranked Sweeny, 59- 55. Fielding a young, inexperienced team, the H-J girls relied on seniors Lisa Turner and Jill Abernathy, both four year starters, to steady the underclassmen. Lisa and Jill each responded to the challenge as they were selected First Team All-District and to the All- Fiegion team. ln addition, Lisa was selected All State for the second time and was picked to play in the TABC All Star game in Waco. Lisa and Jill were both selected to the All Hardin County team. Freshman Stephanie Edwards was selected All- Flegion, All-District, and All Hardin County. Freshman Antoinette Jones was All Hardin County and Honorable Mention All-District. Tracy Hall, LaTaunya Fontenot and Stephanie Leger were selected Honorable Mention All-District as well. The season was highlighted by the championship win in the Westbrook tournament. The Lady Hawks defeated French 27-25 in overtime. The Lady Hawks finished second in two other tournaments. Advancing into the playoffs the girls defeated Kountze 67-52 in Bi-District for the first win over the Lady Lions since the late '6O's, The next top was in Nacogdoches for the area championship. ln the game the Lady Hawks destroyed Groesbeck 69-54 to avenge the loss to the Lady Goats at last year's state tournament. ln the Regional Tournament at Brenham the girls faced the it ranked Sweeny team that boasted two 6'2 girls. The Lady Hawks fell behind 14-2 before fighting to a fourth quarter lead. However, H-J could not hold on to the lead and fell by a four point margin. The season was a great tribute to the determination and hard work of the girls. They achieved a great deal of success. The six losses they encountered were all to ranked teams. Each of these losses were avenged except for Sweeny. The 1984- 85 Lady Hawks were clearly outstanding and they left much hope for the future of girl's basketball at Hardin-Jefferson.
