Hawks Earn Number One Ranking The H-J Hawks continued their tradition of excellence in basketball by ending the season as the number one ranked Class AAA school in the State of Texas. In the process the Hawks claimed their seventh consecutive district championship, which is currently the longest streak in the state in AAA. The State Finalists of 1983-84 returned only one starter for the '84-85 season. The accomplishments of this squad shone brightly as they reeled off 28 wins while losing only 4. Two of the losses came to 41 ranked Lincoln and 42 ranked Silsbee of Class AAAA. The Hawks moved into the 41 position themselves in mid-January and held it through the final poll. Rocky Rocquemore, the lone starter returning, led the state in scoring with a school record of 31.5 scoring average. Rocky was named to the All-State team for the second year in a row and was also selected by TABC to the South All-Star team. Rocky was named District 20-AAA MVP. He was joined on the All-District team by Andre King, who was named the district's Defensive Player of the Year. Jimmy Lonnette and Melvin Benjamin were selected to the All-District team as well. Robb Hamm, Gordon Guillory, and Nickoal Marshall were all selected Honorable Mention. The Hawks waltzed through District 20-AAA with a perfect 14-O record. The big disappointment came when the Hawks, riddled with the flu, lost their bi- district match with Kountze, knocking them out of the state play-off picture. The Hawks, coached by Charles Breithaupt, have won 188 games as of now and lost only 46 during his tenure. This includes 88 district wins and only 6 defeats. The Hawks have won 49 of the last 50 district games and 27 in a row. For this record at H- J Coach Breithaupt was selected Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his seven years of coaching at Hardin-Jefferson. Rocky shoots for two. E :JF Robb Hamm jumps to score.
