Realizing our debt to the petroleum lndustry, the yearbook staff decided to show its gratitude by honoring them in the 1985 Hawk. Since Texaco's birthplace is Sour Lake and also, because with its taxes, Texaco is the largest supporter of our school district, it was decided that singling out Texaco as our partner in education would reflect appreciation to the industry as a whole.

Hardin-Jefferson Recognizes lts Debt To The Petroleum lndustry Above is Texaco's first headquarters in Beaumont, Texas. These men were the crew who brought in Fee 33, Texaco's first producing well. According to Texaco's authorized history, Texaco's major growth began in January, 1903, ' when the Company's Well No. 3 at Sour Lake, not far from the Spindeltop field came in as a major discovery. Texaco is still producing some 2,000 barrels a day from this field and is now engaged in enhanced recovery there. This is an artist's conception of Sour Lake as a boom town in 1902.
