BIG BLUE MACHINE ROCKS I-IABDIN-JEFFEBSCI' WITH FINE MUSIC The Big Blue Machine began their year in August with ninth-grade orientation. The freshmen were taught to play while marching and to understand and execute military commands. Full band rehearsals also began in August with the band working all day on Mondays and Wednesdays and late afternoons and evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In September school began and so did pep rallies and football games. The Twirlers and Flag Corps performed to music conducted by the drum majors, Sandy Douglas and Pam Pool. Band rehearsals were held after school on Tuesdays and some Thursdays. At UIL Marching Contest, the Big Blue Machine received a Division ll. All-District Band tryouts were held at Hardin-Jefferson. The Big Blue Machine placed more students in the band than any other school in our district. All-Region Band tryouts were held on the campus of West Orange-Stark High School. Tonja Manuel, Debra Manuel, and Kim Marble all placed in the Region Band. Competing for these positions were members of bands from all over the region, including 5A bands. A Christmas concert was held at Sour Lake Elementary School for parents and prospective band members. Solo and Ensemble Contest brought more than 100 first-division medals to eligible band students. The Concert and Sight Reading Contest, held at Woodville High School in April, netted the band its sixth consecutive first division trophy. Band Sweetheart and Beau are Sandy Douglas and Darryl Bullock 1984-85 Drum Majors are Pam Pool and Sandy Douglas.
