STARLETTES HAVE AWARD WINNING YEAR The Starlettes took on a whole new look this year with new uniforms and hats. Also, Patsy Williams took over as director. Fifteen out of twenty-five girls attended camp at McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The girls won 74 ribbons: 30 blue first place, 22 red second place, 16 white third place, and six green fourth place. The Starlettes also brought home the Spirit Pom given to the group which shows the most spirit at camp. In September a Drill Team Booster Club was formed. These ladies helped the drill team with many things including a booth at Old Timers' Day in Sour Lake. At Homecoming, Samantha Hall was voted Miss Starlette by the girls in the drill team. This award is given to a junior or senior who has given the most to drill team, worked the hardest with each member as well as the director, and in general devoted herself to the team. In March, the Starlettes had a one-day clinic for all girls interested in trying out for drill team. They were taught a warm-up exercise as well as a routine that had been used during football season. This clinic gave the girls a chance to see what being a drill team member is all about. ln May the Starlettes and Booster Club put on a Lip Sync Contest. lt was called Starmaker '85. Children from the elementary, junior high, and high school were encouraged to participate. There were seven groups from the elementary school and six groups from the high school who signed up. First, second, and third places were given awards. While the winners were being tabulated, Mrs. Sally Smith's fourth-period English Ill class sang We Are the World. Ted Garland from radio station KWIC was the master of ceremonies. Judges were Betsy Ravreby and Glenn Ely from Channel 12 in Beaumont and Boy Cronister from the Triple X Bock Group. Door prizes were given during the night between acts. Tryouts for next year's line were held in May. 42 1984-85 Drill Team officers are Connie Conner, 1st Lieutenant, Kelly Midkiff, 2nd Lieutenant, Flegina Grant, 2nd Lieutenant, and Rhonda LeDoux, Captain. Samantha Hall holds the roses given her for being Miss Starlette.
