HARDIN-JEFFERSON CHEERLEADERS A cheerleader is popular. A cheerleader is glamorous. A cheerleader gets to go to all ot the games and gets to know all of those big-men-on- campus ballplayers. Therefore, the life of a cheerleader must be heaven. Right? Wrong. Some of these things are true, but none of them mention the hard work of learning new yell routines, the sore muscles from all the practice required to give a good performance, the possibility of injury when falling from a pyramid, lack of time for study to keep passing grades, and the necessity to be always enthusiastic and smiling jeven when you don't want toj in order to promote school spirit. This year's cheerleaders began their year in July at Cheerleading Camp at Sam Houston State University. There they received five blue ribbons which were the best a team could get. They also received the spirit. stick four nights in a row and were able to bring it home. They were nominees for the Award of Excellnce, the award given the top squad. For their dance to Thriller in the talent show, they were the only squad to receive a standing ovation. They were responsible for planning and carrying out each pep rally during the football games. They attended and performed at many basketball A games. Cheerleaders are judged on the basis of character, leadership, ability, personality, enthusiasm, and school spirit. They were joined this year by Super Hawk, also known as Flon Chase, a live mascot. Ron was dressed in a red, white, and blue hawk suit. He, with the cheerleaders, was instrumental in building school spirit. Flow 1: T. Hall, C. Benoitg Row 2: S. Leger, L. Martel, S. Fontenot, M. Marshall, A. Spears, Row 3: Ft. Hamm, K. Seaman, T.
