Having a state finalist in headline writing capped off the year for the journalism classes this year. Carrie Griffin placed at district and regional meets to get to make the trip to UIL Journalism Competition Finals in Austin. Both Ron Chase and Missy Couch advanced to regionals in Brenham at Blinn College by placing at district. Ron won first place in newswriting and Missy was second in editorial writing at the District Meet held at East Chambers. By using overhead and tapes, realistic journalism practice settings were made possible. The Journalism I class and the Journalism Il class were separated for the first time, and the infamous Black Hole was turned into a classroom for the smaller Journalism ll class. Because of this, much more work was done on photography as the Black Hole could become really black for all the time students spent in the darkroom working on their photography assignments. On hands experience with the 35mm. camera plus the developing of film and printing of pictures was done often. Also, for the first time, all stories written by the Journalism ll class were written on Apple Computers. Apple Writer program enabled lots of experience with a word processor. Every skill picked up helped the student prepare for future jobs. Senior Journalism ll students who put out four fall editions of the Hawk Squawk included Mike Clifton, Ron Chase, Connie Conner, Kim Brady, Laura Taylor, Sharon Pitre, and Bridgette Wolfe. Journalism l students who joined into the production of the Hawk Squawk were Carrie Griffin, Missy Lloyd, Missy Byrd, Missy Couch, Doris Hidalgo, Cindi Pullen, Tommy Low, and Greg Lehmiller.
