These men were the crew who brought in Fee 33, Texaco's first producing well. According to Texaco's authorized history, Texaco's major growth began in January, 1903, ' when the Company's Well No. 3 at Sour Lake, not far from the Spindeltop field came in as a major discovery. Texaco is still producing some 2,000 barrels a day from this field and is now engaged in enhanced recovery there. This is an artist's conception of Sour Lake as a boom town in 1902. Realizing our debt to the petroleum lndustry, the yearbook staff decided to show its gratitude by honoring them in the 1985 Hawk. Since Texaco's birthplace is Sour Lake and also, because with its taxes, Texaco is the largest supporter of our school district, it was decided that singling out Texaco as our partner in education would reflect appreciation to the industry as a whole. Pep rallies are the highlights of the week during football season. Students and teachers alike look forward to the Friday spirit session. For them, it is an enjoyable event - nothing to do but go and yell and take part in a splendid let it all out event. For other participants, however, it is a different story. The cheerleaders, the drill team, the flag corps, the band, the players themselves, and the sponsors and coaches have worked hard to prepare an outpouring of spirit that seems spontaneous. Each of these groups works all week to get ready for that thirty-minute show. Many hours of practice go into each pep rally. lt is difficult and challenging to come up with a different routine every week, but Hardin-Jefferson's students do just that. Of course, the pep rally is only a preview of Friday night's game. The purpose is to build spirit and cheer the team on to victory! The Starlettes entertain. Seniors lift Robb Hamm into the air. It is a time of letting go, a time of contests, a time of dressing in odd clothing, a time of promoting your candidate for Homecoming duchess or queen - in general, a time for enjoyment and fun. This year, Nerd Day seemed to be the day that most people liked best. Almost everyone, including teachers, had on mismatched, out-of-style clothes and glasses with tape on them. Student Council Has Leadership Role The 1984-85 Student Council began its year in August with the Summer Leadership Conference at Stephen F. Austin University. Council officers in attendance were Daniel Davis, Lou Cappi, Tammie Nolte, and Jill Abernathy. When school started in September, the Council was off and running to provide both guidance and pleasure for the student body. They certainly pleased the faculty with a delicious luncheon on Work Day. Fall also meant football games and the responsibility for selling programs at the games and sponsoring after-game dances. Homecoming Week certainly tested the endurance of the Council because there was no rest for them. They were in charge of all activities, including the hall decorating contest, the dress for each day, the candle light pep rally, and the Homecoming Dance. Student Council officers attended the Mid-Winter Workshop in Kerrville. As suddenly as it began, it was over. The school year was coming to an end. The Council's final activity was supervising elections for next year's officers and representatives. 1984- presid 85 Student Council officers are, top to bottom, Lou Cappi, vice- ent, Daniel Davis, president, Jill Abernathy, treasurer, and Tammie Nolte, secretary. Having a state finalist in headline writing capped off the year for the journalism classes this year. Carrie Griffin placed at district and regional meets to get to make the trip to UIL Journalism Competition Finals in Austin. Both Ron Chase and Missy Couch advanced to regionals in Brenham at Blinn College by placing at district. Ron won first place in newswriting and Missy was second in editorial writing at the District Meet held at East Chambers. In other competition two trophies were brought home from the Kirbyville Invitational Meet. Missy Lloyd and Carrie participated and their combined efforts won the team trophy. Eight editions including a senior edition were put out this year. A news lab written by Bobby Hawthorn, UIL director in Austin, was used for the first time. By using overhead and tapes, realistic journalism practice settings were made possible. The Journalism I class and the Journalism Il class were separated for the first time, and the infamous Black Hole was turned into a classroom for the smaller Journalism ll class. Because of this, much more work was done on photography as the Black Hole could become really black for all the time students spent in the darkroom working on their photography assignments. On hands experience with the 35mm. camera plus the developing of film and printing of pictures was done often. Also, for the first time, all stories written by the Journalism ll class were written on Apple Computers. Apple Writer program enabled lots of experience with a word processor. Every skill picked up helped the student prepare for future jobs. Senior Journalism ll students who put out four fall editions of the Hawk Squawk included Mike Clifton, Ron Chase, Connie Conner, Kim Brady, Laura Taylor, Sharon Pitre, and Bridgette Wolfe. Journalism l students who joined into the production of the Hawk Squawk were Carrie Griffin, Missy Lloyd, Missy Byrd, Missy Couch, Doris Hidalgo, Cindi Pullen, Tommy Low, and Greg Lehmiller. U , Speech And Drama Club Encourages Acting Anc Speaking Abilities The year started with a performance of Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. The drama class chipped in to do the technical work for the choir's musical, Christmas on Angel Street. They also helped the choir with a show at the elementary school. New Choir Sings its Way Into l-I-J Hearts For the first time in eight years, Hardin-Jefferson has a choir, and for its first year the choir has made good progress both individually and as a group. At the beginning of the year, director Mrs. Deidre Linney and the students decided that they should let the public know they existed. Working toward that goal, they made many appearances. The choir's float won first prize in the Old Timers' Day parade. They presented a very successful musical at Christmas. They attended UIL events in the spring. They sang for many groups including the Lions Club, the Ministerial Alliance, and the 1985 graduation exercise. The choir rewarded themselves for a job well done with a visit to Astroworld. The students who made that trip will always remember the good time they had. Choir members ride their prize-winning float in the Old Timers' Day parade. A cheerleader gets to go to all ot the games and gets to know all of those big-men-on- campus ballplayers. Therefore, the life of a cheerleader must be heaven. Right? Wrong. Some of these things are true, but none of them mention the hard work of learning new yell routines, the sore muscles from all the practice required to give a good performance, the possibility of injury when falling from a pyramid, lack of time for study to keep passing grades, and the necessity to be always enthusiastic and smiling jeven when you don't want toj in order to promote school spirit. This year's cheerleaders began their year in July at Cheerleading Camp at Sam Houston State University. There they received five blue ribbons which were the best a team could get. They also received the spirit. stick four nights in a row and were able to bring it home. They were nominees for the Award of Excellnce, the award given the top squad. For their dance to Thriller in the talent show, they were the only squad to receive a standing ovation. They were responsible for planning and carrying out each pep rally during the football games. They attended and performed at many basketball A games. Cheerleaders are judged on the basis of character, leadership, ability, personality, enthusiasm, and school spirit. They were joined this year by Super Hawk, also known as Flon Chase, a live mascot. Ron was dressed in a red, white, and blue hawk suit. Also, Patsy Williams took over as director. Fifteen out of twenty-five girls attended camp at McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The girls won 74 ribbons: 30 blue first place, 22 red second place, 16 white third place, and six green fourth place. The Starlettes also brought home the Spirit Pom given to the group which shows the most spirit at camp. In September a Drill Team Booster Club was formed. These ladies helped the drill team with many things including a booth at Old Timers' Day in Sour Lake. At Homecoming, Samantha Hall was voted Miss Starlette by the girls in the drill team. This award is given to a junior or senior who has given the most to drill team, worked the hardest with each member as well as the director, and in general devoted herself to the team. In March, the Starlettes had a one-day clinic for all girls interested in trying out for drill team. They were taught a warm-up exercise as well as a routine that had been used during football season. This clinic gave the girls a chance to see what being a drill team member is all about. ln May the Starlettes and Booster Club put on a Lip Sync Contest. lt was called Starmaker '85. Children from the elementary, junior high, and high school were encouraged to participate. There were seven groups from the elementary school and six groups from the high school who signed up. First, second, and third places were given awards. While the winners were being tabulated, Mrs. Sally Smith's fourth-period English Ill class sang We Are the World. Ted Garland from radio station KWIC was the master of ceremonies. Judges were Betsy Ravreby and Glenn Ely from Channel 12 in Beaumont and Boy Cronister from the Triple X Bock Group. Door prizes were given during the night between acts. The freshmen were taught to play while marching and to understand and execute military commands. Full band rehearsals also began in August with the band working all day on Mondays and Wednesdays and late afternoons and evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In September school began and so did pep rallies and football games. The Twirlers and Flag Corps performed to music conducted by the drum majors, Sandy Douglas and Pam Pool. Band rehearsals were held after school on Tuesdays and some Thursdays. At UIL Marching Contest, the Big Blue Machine received a Division ll. All-District Band tryouts were held at Hardin-Jefferson. The Big Blue Machine placed more students in the band than any other school in our district. All-Region Band tryouts were held on the campus of West Orange-Stark High School. Tonja Manuel, Debra Manuel, and Kim Marble all placed in the Region Band. Competing for these positions were members of bands from all over the region, including 5A bands. A Christmas concert was held at Sour Lake Elementary School for parents and prospective band members. Solo and Ensemble Contest brought more than 100 first-division medals to eligible band students. FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES IS INSPIRED ORGANIZATION The purpose of any huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. The huddle, as the group is called, is made up of athletes or those associated closely with an athletic team. Meetings are held twice monthly at members' homes. These meetings are a time of Bible study and sharing of concerns, ideas, and ideals as they relate to each person's life. The Hardin-Jefferson FCA sponsored a Fun Bun during Old Timers' Day. lt was a lot of planning and hard work, but the kids did work hard and it turned out to be a big success. We look forward to an even bigger run next year, said Coach Greg Dupree. The group visited several area churches. It is a nondenominational group, so that any person is welcome. Several members plan to attend a National Conference this summer at Texas A8tM University in College Station. This is billed as a week of inspiration and perspiration. Through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes ordinary people help each other become better people and better examples of what God can do with a yielded life. t t. , W2 Wt wi Z , f- 45 , , f J FCA officers are Shawn Brantley, Jason Barker, Tommy Low, Ed Murray, and Paula Ellison. The young men from high school who belong to this volunteer organization do not just suddenly rush off to aim a water hose at a fire. They are much more highly trained. Weekly meetings are held to teach them modern fire-fighting techniques. Not only do these volunteers for community service fight fires, they are also in charge of emergency ambulance calls. All of them are trained in CPB to help heart attack victims, and it is not unknown for a baby to be delivered on the way to the hospital. To raise money to support their services, the group holds an annual barbecue. Also, on Old Timers' Day, they sell their famous barbecue at a booth, and as a special treat for the youngsters, they give rides around Sour Lake on the fire truck. Helping to kick off Little League season this year, the Firemen played the Little League coaches a game of baseball and again offered rides for the little people. As a service project, the Firemen stationed themselves at the four-way stop sign and other strategic areas to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Fund. They battled down to the wire and were close to winning a district championship. Here's what the football players have to say about the season. This was a great year. We almost pulled it off. We were so close, but we played our hearts out. We just came up a little short. l'm going to have to leave, but the underclassmen can handle the job next year, said Kelly Shaw, wingback. Cornerback Brian Hamm said, This was the best year since l've been playing football. I wish we would have made it to the playoffs, but we did better than we were picked to do. I wish I had just one more year because next year we are going to have a good team. Splitend Clayton Doucet stated, l'm going to miss the guys and the coaches. I just hate to end my last year with a loss. We had a good year. Our attitudes were great, and we played like champions the whole year. Defensive tackle Doug Carmon said, This was a good year. l had a lot of fun. I just wished I had another year. l'm going to miss all the contact because it was fun hitting people. In the process the Hawks claimed their seventh consecutive district championship, which is currently the longest streak in the state in AAA. The State Finalists of 1983-84 returned only one starter for the '84-85 season. The accomplishments of this squad shone brightly as they reeled off 28 wins while losing only 4. Two of the losses came to 41 ranked Lincoln and 42 ranked Silsbee of Class AAAA. The Hawks moved into the 41 position themselves in mid-January and held it through the final poll. Rocky Rocquemore, the lone starter returning, led the state in scoring with a school record of 31.5 scoring average. Rocky was named to the All-State team for the second year in a row and was also selected by TABC to the South All-Star team. Rocky was named District 20-AAA MVP. He was joined on the All-District team by Andre King, who was named the district's Defensive Player of the Year. Jimmy Lonnette and Melvin Benjamin were selected to the All-District team as well. Lisa and Jill were both selected to the All Hardin County team. Freshman Stephanie Edwards was selected All- Flegion, All-District, and All Hardin County. Freshman Antoinette Jones was All Hardin County and Honorable Mention All-District. Tracy Hall, LaTaunya Fontenot and Stephanie Leger were selected Honorable Mention All-District as well. The season was highlighted by the championship win in the Westbrook tournament. The Lady Hawks defeated French 27-25 in overtime. The Lady Hawks finished second in two other tournaments. Advancing into the playoffs the girls defeated Kountze 67-52 in Bi-District for the first win over the Lady Lions since the late '6O's, The next top was in Nacogdoches for the area championship. ln the game the Lady Hawks destroyed Groesbeck 69-54 to avenge the loss to the Lady Goats at last year's state tournament. ln the Regional Tournament at Brenham the girls faced the it ranked Sweeny team that boasted two 6'2 girls. The Lady Hawks fell behind 14-2 before fighting to a fourth quarter lead. However, H-J could not hold on to the lead and fell by a four point margin. The season was a great tribute to the determination and hard work of the girls. They achieved a great deal of success. The six losses they encountered were all to ranked teams. Each of these losses were avenged except for Sweeny. The 1984- 85 Lady Hawks were clearly outstanding and they left much hope for the future of girl's basketball at Hardin-Jefferson.
