Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1988 volume:

2 Spirit is a big key to success. Knowing friends are supporting you gives you a big boost to strive for the best in whatever activity you participate. When others see how much spirit we have they see the togetherness in our school. Together we work for the best. Spirit is only another one of our little secrets. 3 4 What does friendship mean to H.H.S.? Friendship is a big part of the success in school. A few of the students feel friendship means just being with those special people in their lives, going out and getting crazy with all their friends on the weekends, or just someone to share their deepest secrets with. We show friendship in many ways, from walking down the hall, hand in hand, to just sitting around the halls gossiping at noon. 5 School isn’t just a place where you learn about education, it's also a place to learn about life and eachother. I guess that's why it's hardly ever boring around Hardin High. Sure it's a place where you work hard, but, have you ever heard the saying, All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.” Well, around here we don't beleive in being bored. 7 8 The success of the whole school year has to do with our classes. Kids learn things that they need to know for the future. For example, in Biology you can dissect anything Mr. Sherman gives'you. In typing class, you learn to type faster by doing time drills or by typing reports with accuracy. Everyone knows how to have fun after all the hard work is done. They can sit back and relax in class or talk quietly with their friends. This is our secret to having fun with our success of learning. 9 It s a natural act to get crazy after school is dismissed, and Hardin is no exception. Whether it's taking a drive on up to Billings to cut loose or staying here in Hardin, we have our share of good times and that's what makes life worth living. U 12 The Hardin High School students are having fun in and out of school. Some students have jobs after school to keep busy both ways. The students that have jobs are pushing to succeed. They've all started their career going earlier than some. Can you imagine working all day at school, then only to go to another job after school? Tough, huh? Well some of our kids are getting a small taste of what it's like to be out in the real world. Whether it’s to earn a little more money, impress people, or to spend your time, having a job is a great learning experience. Most of the students that are working are achieving more than others can or will in the future. These are our leaders in the future so we, as people, have to give them room to achieve more in life. And to those that are doing so. Good Job! 13 14 Pink, blue, purple, stone-wash, high-water, old and new... fashions come and go just as fast as time. You can wear just about anything you want and it is accepted to be a part of the 80's fashion. Everyone loves to play with fashion and it is one of the many secrets to the schools success. 15 Every year it's' up to the teachers to tell us what they know. We've asked a few teachers what their secret to success was. Mr. Imer felt his secret to success as a P.E. teacher is true grit. Mr. Lelidowicz felt his secret was to teach kids reponsibility. All of our teachers work hard putting in there own time to teach us what we'll need after we graduate. And we thank them. 16 Every year it's' up to the teachers to tell us what they know. All of our teachers work hard putting in there own time to teach us what we'll need after we graduate. And we thank them. 17 18 Lunch. Now that's a word that can inspire many different feelings. To some, it means another flirtation with death. Others think it neither hazardous nor healthful. Either way, though, we have fun and enjoy our time with our friends. 19 20 Chairman's Message It has been a privilege to serve as a school board trustee the past 14 years. To serve and be associated with a segment of our community as vital as the education of our youth is indeed a special honor. I wish for everyone to have and enjoy spiritual and material happiness; but most importantly, spiritual happiness. Sincerely, Joe Koebbe, Chairman 22 School Board Members L to R: Donald Passes, Eric Torske, Joe Koebbe, Jim Herbel Carlene Old Elk, Tom Zwick Mr. Svee's Input Whenever a school year nears its end, the memories created during that year should always take on a happy glow. This past year has certainly had its share of good memories. I wish to thank the students of Hardin High School for their spirit, their understanding ways and the closeness that they exhibit in being Bulldogs . You are a wonderful group of the District administration, 1 wish to say thank you for the memories. Sincerely, Rodney Svee, Mr. Gilbertson's Input Hopefully, you have enjoyed this year at HHS and have many fond memories to carry with you. Cherish these times together . Be a part of as many activities as you can. Set goals for yourselves and work hard to accomplish them while looking to the future. Seniors, congratulations on your accomplishments and contributions over the past four years. Best wishes to all of you in your future endeavors. Good luck and be happy. Mr. Gilbertson Mr. Anderson's Input Have you ever heard a coach say You will play in a game the way you practice. I think that saying is so true for students entering and leaving high school. You will only get out of school what you put into it. My hope is that each one of you will vow to put your best effort into everything you do. If you will do this I promise you that you will reap many benefits in the years to come. Good luck to all of you in the coming year. Mr. Anderson 23 Clean-up Crew Harold Timmons, the head janitor, has worked at Hardin High for nineteen and a half years. He likes putting away commodities the most, but doesn't like shoveling snow. Overall, though, he enjoys his job. The other janitors are Ramon Gonzales and Carlotta Pattyn. 24 FACULTY Shahid Ahmed Ed Auker Bob Bennett Ken Boggio Math English Math Band Senior Advisor Freshman Advisor Senior Advisor Math Club Golf Coach Scott Brokaw Resource Junior Advisor Yvonne DeMars French Spanish Cheering Advisor Wes Eben Counselor Donna Esp Math Sophomore Advisor Philip Engeldrum Science Sophomore Advisor Track Coach There are many things about our teachers and counselors which we don't know. For instance, Ms. Laura Sundheim was born in Sidney MT. and lived in Fairview on a farm with her six brothers and sisters. She graduated from Fairview High School as Valedictorian, then pursued her education at Eastern Montana College, where she received academic scholarships, and received her Bachelor degree and then her Masters in Counseling. During college Laura Sundheim participated in Track, Volleyball and Basketball. When she ran in track she set the Frontier Conference Record for the 100 meter dash and that record, to this day, remains unbeaten. Besides being a counselor she coaches Volleyball, and enjoys it very much. When school is out for the summer break, Laura Sundheim umpires softball and works at Basketball and or Volleyball clinics. She now lives in Hardin and likes the people and the community. For the future she plans to keep working and maybe get married. But, for now, Luara Sundheim feels satisfied with what she has accomplished so far. Mrs. Jo Vines is the newest member of the Hardin High School staff. She was born in Springfield, Missouri, and moved to Texas, with her parents and sister when she was in the ninth grade. She studied at the University of Texas in Arlington. After that she managed a western wear store before moving to Hardin. At present, she has two sons. Tommy who is six, and James who is three. Jo Vines like to sew and do gardening in her spare time. She also likes to read when she has time. Jo Vines said, I like Hardin a lot. It’s a smaller school than what I went to and I like the small school atmosphere. As for the future, Jo Vines has no plans of moving, but she said that there was some more education that she would like to get for herself and she would like to be able to spend ample time with her boys. We asked her if she enjoyed the students here in Hardin and her reply was 'I like all the students here at Hardin High. She enjoyed the school year because it went by faster then it usually does. Her job is never boring. She receives some very funny excuses for absences or tardies, but the funniest excuse she's ever received would be the one of a girl who got sick from eating too much of her home-made peanut butter cookies. Ken O'Dell Marketing Business Freshman Advisor DECA 28 Mr. Eben is originally from Texas where he attended Austin College at Sherman, Texas for four years on a football scholarship. After college he was a pilot for the U.S. Navy for eight years. He later taught Bible school at Hamilton for three years. He then went on to the University of Montana for his masters degree. Mr. Eben is now counseling here at HHS. He specializes in chemical awareness (CITE) and family counseling. Wes Eben enjoys working here. He says HHS has a progressive, open system He also appreciates the support he receives from the administration and parents. There are only two things that he dislikes about counseling: he can't change people and there are very few immediate results.. His first three years here, he helped coach Varsity football and his last two years he has coached the eighth grade team. Mr. Eben has been with us for five years and hopes to stay for many more. It ranged from Hat, shades, and tie Day to Orange and black Day. Spirit Week was based on cheering on the football team for Homecoming Night. Students and teachers participated in the activities of Spirit Week. They dressed up to show their school spirit. For the Freshman class it was a whole new experience in their first year of high school. As for the Senior class, it was one of the secrets leading to the success of their last year. The days included in Spirit Week were Hats, Shades, and Tie day for Monday. Tuesday was Sweats day. Teacher day was held on Wednesday. Thursday was kept for Hawaiian day. On Friday, Homecoming Day, we let our true colors shine through. Everyone was having a great time dressing up in unique and crazy outfits for the week. Most everyone joined in the bonfire so they could raise the spirit of the football team. Teachers and students showed up even though it was quite chilly. The fire, however, brought things to life. The cheerleaders encouraged everyone with cheers for their football team. As the football team left they knew they had everyone behind them for a tough game the next night. Hopefully everyone will participate in Spirit Week again next year. As for the activities, everyone had a great time showing off their school spirit. The Pep Band helped increased the spirit during the activities by marching in the parade and by playing during the pep assembly They also performed for the halftime entertainment and the coronation ceremony. During the pep assembly the cheerleaders had a great deal of activities set for the students on Homecoming Day. The activities were scooter races, bandaging each other up with toilet paper, spinning around the bat, and carrying an egg across the gym floor. The final event in the activities was the tug-of-war with the girls' basket-ball team giving it away to the boys' crosscountry team. At the last minute, the girls let go of the rope and the boys went flying. 44 Taking It To The Top Hardin High's homecoming floats were ones to remember! Though our boys' football team was coming up against a tough opponent, not once did anyone give up the team spirit. The Freshman class started off with their version of the game with Eagles Last Stand. Sophmores showed the faith with Battle of Bulldog Run. While the Seniors captured their spirit with Mount Eaglejima. But this year it was the Juniors who took home the first place title with their float Sitting Bulldog. After the parade, the floats were taken behind the school and dismantled. 45 Homecoming Kicks off 1987 School Year Homecoming marks the real beginning of the school year, and Homecoming 1987 was no different. It was especially fun for Ed Coates and Krista Herbel who were chosen as Mr. Touchdown and Homecoming Queen. Their coronation and a dance were the highlight of a week of events that culminated at the Homecoming football game. Homecoming candidates, four couples who did plenty of waving and smiling throughout the week, were : Craig Warren and Krista Herbel, Ed Coates and Tanya Egged, Kevin Nelson and Jennifer Guptill, and Harold Hill and Robin Borgeson. 3 1 A Royal Success Coates and Herbel reign Ed Coates and Krista Herbal were all smiles when they were chosen as Mr. Touchdown and Queen for this year's Homecoming. Krista was radiant in her blue gown as the crown was placed on her head by last year's queen, Annie Seykora. Ed on the other hand, received his crown while dressed in his football uniform. When asked how it felt to be chosen Mr. Touchdown, Ed Coates replied, I'm glad that 1 was chosen, but it would have been better if we would have won the game . 47 Dance Has Mixed Reviews The Homecoming Dance was a historical and momentous occasion. This year we started a new tradition by having a music light show. This novel idea was a first for our annual Homecoming Dance. The student body had mixed reactions about the music by D.J. Sound. Amy Koyama said, It was hard to dance on the carpet, but I thought the music was great . Cory Metcalf commented, They didn't play enough up to date music, but it was better than last year's. Melville Stops said, The carpet made the music hard to dance to and the music wasn't up to date enough . Syd Lytle added, I felt that having a D.J. do the music instead of a band was better because it was the original artists. The only fault I saw in D.J. Sound was they didn't interact with the audience. In general the students did not like the type of music played. Overall, the turn out was good and the consensus was that the evening was a success. 48 12. Marcel told me that in West Germany, they have to be in school for 13 years. When asked if he liked it here in Hardin he replied, I'm not even homesick yet. Marcel will have taken his leave on June 25,1988. Ben stayed with Wayne and Rosella Meredith. He was 16, but had to start as a freshman because he couldn't speak English very well, however he later picked up most of our language and could speak it fluently before he left. Ben liked it here in Hardin and thought everybody was very nice to him while he was here. But to everybody's regret he too had to leave, but before the school year ended. Ben left around January 21st. 78 1 I School Paper Thrives The Journalism class published eight issues of the school newspaper, the Bulldog Star. The first issue featured Homecoming, and after that a newspaper was published every three weeks. Staff members covered sports, clubs, contest winners, and special events. By the fourth issue, student journalists were tackling controversial topics such as teenage pregnancy, student rights, and athletes who break training. In addition to these successes, the class experienced some failures. Some ideas, such as the Dear Aggie? advice column, were not well received by HHS stu- dents. Another problem occurred when the pullout featured some embarrassing song dedications. Even though the Supreme Court ruled that school officials could sensor student newspapers, the Bulldog Star received full support from the administration. Mr. Nesovic said the team was well prepared and did a good job in presenting the information to the judges, but overall he felt the team did very, very well . They won the District competition at Eastern Montana College against Laurel, then proceeded to the State competition in Helena, where they faced Missoula Hellgate and took Second. This testing program is funded by a national commission established by Congress. The tests are expected to run for another two years. The trip to Helena seemed to be the most exciting for the team. Everyone loved being in the Capitol building and exploring it as they pleased. 83 Symphonic Band works long and hard practicing to prepare for upcoming events. They went to Eastern A in Laurel and had a great time working on pieces of music that select band directors chose for them. They also had to prepare music to be judged by adjudicators. The band had some great concerts for the public. They also took part in the World's Largest Concert. The pep band plays for boys' and girls' basketball games in addition to playing at pep assemblies. Mr. Boggio said 'I thought they did a pretty good on everything they did this year. 84 Jazz band had a great time performing different styles of music that Mr. Boggio picked out for them. Also the kids in the band deserve a lot of credit for learning how to play and put the music together. As for their performances, Katie and Michelle and other soloist in jazz band did a great job getting in front of a large audience and playing. They also had to be judged by an adjudicator on how well they played together as a group. One of their first trips took them to Bismark, North Dakota and they were ranked in the top three. So all the people in or connected with the jazz band deserve a lot of credit for putting everything together. Back row L to R: M. Harmon, J. Kehr, A. Melville, D. Boyer, M. Schaff. Middle row: B. JAZZY SPECTACULAR 86 SUCCESS THROUGH MUSIC Choir has had a fun and exciting year. They've gone on at least two trips and have two more to attend. They're first trip was to Powell Wyoming for the Northwest Festival in February. The night they arrived they attended a concert at the college. The following day they worked at workshops. They performed three songs, Money, Money , Lift You Up , and Lonesome Road . Only 24 of the choir attended this trip. They’re second trip was to Glasgow. The chorus practiced long and hard hours each day to prepare for the concerts. Then all of the choirs came together and practiced in mass chorus and performed three songs. Four students were selected to perform in the honor chorale. They were Ann Bennett, Robin Borgeson Mark Sargent, and Ramon Rios 88 Singing Our Hearts Out. Swing choir did an outstanding job this year with all the events they have attended plus the different songs and dances they've performed. Swing choir consists of sixteen people this year.and are they ever special! There are eight boys and eight girls, including two freshman. They competed in places like Billings and Glasgow. We hope to have even more people out for it next year. The cheerleaders are receiving a lot of help from former Penn State cheerleader Missy Nelson. She has been helping the cheerleaders with some of the new dances they have come up with. Senior Tanya Egged received overall ability and personality at the WWC workshop at Billings Skyview, She really knows how to flip people out at the games! Lytle 129 The yearbook staff had a great time putting together the yearbook. They also had their share of worries wondering if it was going to be finished in time. Mr. Fox as their supervisor pushed them to do all the work ahead of time instead of leaving it for the last minute. Mr. Fox said, As a team and working together this years staff was the best I ever had. Mr. Fox felt that the yearbook had too high of a goal for their yearbook but feels they can pull it off if they raise all the money they need and don't go in the hole! He is anxious to see what next year's staff will be like. Also, he can hardly wait to see how this year's year book turns out. This was the first year that sophomores and freshmen were let onto the staff. But everybody had a great time putting it together despite the hardships. And hope next year's staff will also have all the fun they had. Editors were as follows: Editor: K. Nelson Copy Editor: T. Dahlgren Finances: L. Tschetter Ads Director: D. The Prom, The Time of Our Lives , proved to be a success. The Juniors got busy Monday night to begin the decorations. Slowly but surely, the gym began to take shape. Katie Seykora was head of the Prom committee that made up roughly 80% of the class. Many different things were present at prom. For pictures, a bridge was set down for couples to daintily pass over, while pictures were taken. Some girls were scared that they weren't going to make it over due to their hoops or they had a fear of tripping. Every couple that went through made it with no trouble at all! The band, Black Water , was playing during this time. Couples started to shake their bodies throughout the night. 143 MMmisM The gym sparkled with decorations and soft lights as it anticipated another night of magic from 1987-1988 Jr. Sr. Prom. The gym opened to the parents and the public at 8:00 p.m. and the band, Blackwater , started playing at around 9:30 p.m. for awaiting listeners. The theme for this year's Prom was The Time of Our Lives. The dance ended at 1:00, but the excitement didn't. 144 Aaadl Ulh© IB:m ®Il®|p® Plsas® The lights began to dim. A hush ripples throughout the audience. One by one people are turning to look at the back of the auditorium. Slowly they enter. This is not an execution. This is the coronation ceremonies for 1988's Prom. The activities had just begun with coronation at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday April 9th. Walking toward them are students nominated by their peers. Everyone's wondering who will be Queen. Will it be Missy Wacker, Christie Wolcott, Monica Harmon or Cass Graber? Will Kevin Gross or Corey Meredith be crowned King. Possibly it will be Jeff Leischner or E.J. Storm? 145 Usato And the royalty of 1988 are ... Missy Wacker and Kevin Gross! The audience applauds for the King and Queen. Cameras start clicking like a mass of fireflies that are suddenly set free. After the ceremony, which lasts 20 minutes. Prom begins. How do the newly crowned King and Queen feel? Miss. Wacker said, 1 felt surprised. Gross just summed up his feelings as being Great! 146 The Baccalaureate-Commencement was held on May 22, 1988 in the Middle School auditorium. The High School Band under the direction of Mr. Ken Boggio played the usual Fanfare Processional and Recessional. They also played two other songs which were Hymn to Joy and Phoenix Overture. The Benediction was delivered by Mr. Kim Anderson. Reverend Bill Tibbs gave the Baccalaureate address and Mr. Kim Anderson introduced the class speakers; Cassandra Graber, Jennifer Guptill and Ed Coates. 147 The Senior Class Saluditorian was Billy Weaver and the Valedictorian was Corey Meredith.
