BULLDOGS ON THE MOVE HARDIN HIGH SCHOOL HARDIN, MONTANA VOLUME 1983 Table Of Contents This book of memories is dedicated to the senior class of 1983. Throughout the years they have grown physically, intellectually and socially waiting for the day they would graduate. The theme of this years’ annual is “On the Move”. It describes the spirit and never-ending pace of Hardin High School. The school pulses with energy from the time the doors open until the last bus departs. Each class moves to a distinct beat. The freshman class has made their debut, “Moving In” and acquainting themselves to new surroundings, routines and people. The sophomores are beginning to relax, setting their goals and “Moving Along” to the year 1985. Our junior class is anticipating “Moving Up” and reigning as the top class of Hardin High School. The mighty seniors are gathering their belongings: polished skills, realized talents, lifelong friends and “Moving Out” onto different paths. Good Luck to the senior class of 1983. For the past twelve years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Hardin Schools. Together with the Class of “83” I will leave Hardin, but the memories of those twelve years will give me joy forever. Thank you for twelve great years. Willard R. Anderson Superintendent The 1982-83 term has been an interesting one with plenty of memories for everyone - some good, some bad. I hope this yearbook reminds you of all the good times and people you shared them with over the months. I’ve enjoyed working with you and I would like to extend my best wishes to the “Class of 1983” in their future endeavors. When the rest of you return, I hope you will strive to improve on all of the academic, athletic, music and artistic talent that surfaced this year. Don Gilbertson Principal District 17-H 1 School Board School Board: From Left to Right, Dr. Michael Downing, Donald Beary, Lambert Vandersloot (Vice-Chairman), Donald Fox, Harvey Pitsch, Dr. Willard Anderson (Superintendent). Shown below, Joseph Koebbe (Chairman). It has been a very busy year for the Board of Trustees of School Districts 17-H and 1. It is rewarding to see the good things that are happening in our school district. The completion of our building program, the beginning of a gifted and talented program, and the near completion of the curriculum development program. There are new and productive efforts being made in every area of our school system. I believe the support for better education among students, faculty and community has never been higher. This year will mark the end of twelve years of service as Superintendent of Schools for Dr. Willard R. Anderson. The Board of Trustees will do everything to make the transition from Dr. Anderson to the new superintendent as smooth as possible so that the good things will continue to happen without interruption. I would say that it has been a great year for School Districts 17-H and 1. The week began with an uneasy anticipation of the approaching Friday, but the Student Council turned this anxiety into a time of dances, parties and dressup days. A great deal of planning on the Councils part produced such activities as “Overhaul Em Day”, “Don’t Sweat It”, “Knock Your Socks Off”, “Hippie and Punk Rock Day” and a bonfire that evening. The highlight of the week was, of course, the Homecoming dance. Everyone had a great time and our lives were filled with frienzied disorganization. We’ll never forget those fantastic moments at H.H.S. because we live to laugh. Everyone got into the act in this years float production. The theme revolved around great T.V. and movie spin-offs. Each Class worked deligently to make the impossible happen — A float that resembled something. 16 17 Homecoming Parade Juniors Float - “Friday The 17th”. Freshman Float - “E.T. . Pep Club Float - “Give A Cheer For The Hardin Team”. Football Team with spirit stick. Lisa Bostrom and runner-up Eric Hickey. Lori Slattery, runner-up, and Dana Lytle. Horn ecoming 1982 The candidates for the 1982 Homecoming King and Queen were nominated by each class. Freshmans, Lisa Bostrom and Eric Hickey, Sophomores, Teri Butkay and Brad Wetz, Juniors, Lori Slattery and Dana Lytle. The Seniors, of course, nominated the winners, Tempe Johnson and Wayne Edgar. 20 As fireworks exploded during the 1982 Homecoming, a little of magic occurred for Tempe Johnson and Wayne Edgar. In one special moment, they were crowned the Homecoming Queen and King. 21 Seniors Then 22 And Now. In every age and every nation, we have always attempted to discover the essence of life - What is it and how it should be lived. Members of the graduating Class of 1983 have spent the past twelve years attempting to discover this riddle - this “celebration of life” and perhaps have concluded as Henry David Thureau did, “Living is so dear, I did not wish to live what was not life”. As the 1982-83 school year comes to a close on another successful nine months at Hardin High School we all bid farewell to a class of academic achievers and athletic, a class of gifted and talented young men and women; a class of musical and artistic abilities and loving and caring human beings. In our sadness we anticipate joy - joy in knowing and believing you all are our future, and our hope. Our leaders in our homes, in schools, in our communities, on our nation and even abroad. You all will make us proud! It might be well just to remember as you leave us and discover the full richness of each single day. There is a simple, yet proud precept of living: 5 “Only he is rich who owns the day. Things do not change; we change. Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, Simplify. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg. God works in moments. Happiness consists of not having, but of being; not of possessing, but of enjoying”. Thank you for being a part of and sharing the last four years with us. The class really didn’t understand why everyone made such a fuss about High School until homecoming rolled around. As freshman we decided high school was a lot of fun but also a lot of work! The season started out quickly for the Bulldogs with two quick wins over rivals Labre and Lodge Grass. That marked the first milestone for the lady Bulldogs. The second landmark followed two weeks later as the girls played a blistering second half and raced past long-time foe Laurel to post a 1-0 conference record. One week later the Bulldogs held off a last quarter surge to bring their conference record to 2-1 and 4-2 overall. Mid-season brought road trips and a plateau of sorts for the Bulldogs in their play as well as hopes of improving their win-loss record. The girls ended their season with a 4-15 overall record. The 1983-84 version of the Hardin Bulldogs will be minus the services of graduates Dora Gonzales, Cindy Herbel, Lorri Old Coyote, Diane Kollekowski, and Nicole Remmich. The season’s leading scorer was Lee Ann Bruised Head with 9.3 per game. Lee Ann also lead in the rebounding category with 9.6 per game. The best field goal percentage 40% for Tami Jacox. The best free throw percentage belonged to Donna Dreamer with 67% Bulldogs honored as player of the week throughout the season were: Lee Ann Bruised Head, Donna Dreamer, Dora Gonzales, Cindy Herbel, Tami Jacox, Diane Kollekowski, Thelma Other Medicine, and Nicole Remmich. Hardin’s representative to the Eastern A All-Conference team was Lee Ann Bruised Head. Lee Ann was selected as Honorable Mention center. 60 JV Team Members were: Sitting left to right, Val Doyle, Sharon Howe, Lauren Big Hair, Kneeling left to right, Jackie Wagenaar, Michelle Seymour, Eunice Enick, Kathy Redden, Standing left to right, Donna Dreamer, Joy Cook, Coach Abraham, Tamra Null, and Sherri Plenty Hawk. On the evening of September 22, Harlin, Wetz, and Edgar, team captains, led their team onto the Rams Central Field and three touchdowns later the Bulldogs had avenged their previous year 0-46 defeat with a 22-0 crushing victory. Head coach Genaton, pleased with his teams fine display, saw all his efforts dashed when the following week, over confident and weary from a tiring bus ride the Bulldogs were shut out 33-0. But the Bulldogs showed their determination in their first home game against Fergus and treated the enthusiastic crowd to a feast of football skills. Touchdowns were scored in the first half alone and they eventually won 34-17. However, the team was dealt its severest blow of all when Warren Kahn, foreign exchange student and key running back, was declared ineligible by the MHSA in a contraversial decision. Without a running offense, the defense were pushed to the limit and beyond. A month later the Bulldogs were feeling from four more losses handed down by four very tough football teams. Then realizing it was possibly the final game of their lives, the seniors showed some of their former flair and defeated Park. A fine finish for a fine team. Coaches Genatone, Shaw, and Boston produced an excellent bunch of mature men in the seniors and gave hope for future seasons in the under classmen. Congratulations too to QB Mike Harlin in being placed in the conference first team; and to all members of the football team. The boys basketball team did what no one expected and what no one had done in 20 years - QUALIFIED FOR STATE! The young team started the season slowly, yet always getting better with each game. Close loses turned into victorys’ midway as the Bulldogs end a three game winning streak by defeating arch rival Lodge Grass. The support during the season by the school and community was by far the best in the state. Home game attendance averaged over 3000 fans! It was not uncommon for Bulldog fans to pack opposing gyms. The first game of divisional tournament at the Billings Metra, against the eventual state champion Park High, proved to be the best game of the season for the Bulldogs. Leading by as many as 24 points at one time, the Hardin team destroyed the Rangers and put themselves one game away from history. A close loss to Laurel put the Bulldogs in a do or die game with Lewistown, a team they had beaten twice during the year. The game went down to the final second with the Bulldogs coming out on top. The State tournament was anticlimactic as the Bulldogs won 1 and lost two, finishing 7th in the pack. We can be proud of our team, their accomplishments have made the season a successful and enjoyable one. 70 Back row, Left to Right: Bruce White, Kevin Old Coyote, Jonathon Big Medicine, Arthur Stuart, Jim Real Bird. Together the 1983 Annual staff has worked to accurately portray the events and people at Hardin High School. We have successfully erased past debts and continue to raise funds in order to produce a book which will be affordable and complete. Our efforts were seen as the Annual staff sold advertising, buttons, put on various food sales and served at school concession stands. Two big events that were sponsored by the Annual were the “Snow Ball Dance”, which was visited by Santa, and the “Great Depression Dance”. As the year culminates we hope your memories keep “On the Move”. V. Kollodge Annual Advisor t 88 Art Club Art Club consists of a dedicated few who not only serve the school, but the community.
