SALYER Education today has two chief concerns -it must play a maior role in developing and protecting the roots of our democratic society-it must also develop individuals, who, as individuals will actively and con- structively carry forward our society. We are proud of our High School and its tradition We are proud of our fine city and its citizens who enable us to offer you opportunities which have been fought for by American citizens for decades. Many of you are in school at the expense of great sacrifices by your parents. Make sure that you reach as closely as is possible the goal of good sportsmanship which your parents, the school, the city, and the nation require of you so that your American ways of life may be preserved. Don't take lightly the chances which are being provided for you. Justify the confidence which is placed in your destiny. Keep faith with your parents, your city, your country, and with yourself in the business of preparing yourself for citizenship. MR. PAUL M. The date was September 7, 1954, the occasion-the take-off of the '58 rocket to the moon. We, the passengers for this scientific expedition, otherwise known as eager, bustling Frosh, en- trusted our lives and our money into the hands of: pilot, Jim Koerber, co-pilot, Frank Lane, and members of the crew, Judy Martin, Wilbur Kukes, and Frank Nigro. The first thing in line was the ship, it was a mess! The whole interior was redecorated with blue and gold. Everyone was really ln The Mood for this business especially when some got to try their hand at arranging beautiful bouquets of white roses, the official flower. After a big undertaking like this, some entertainment was in order, and a dance was iust the thing. This was held on December 4. Lack of funds drove us to baking for a food sale. We stopped a satellite to barter our goods. Our fuel station loomed up in the distance iust in time on September 2, 1955. A new pilot, Frank Lane, co-pilot, Bob Hardt, and crew, Barbara Cox and Wilbur Kukes were elected. Also Judy Martin was re-elected to the crew. Before the next take-off the residents of the moon introducd us to a pleasant little torture chamber to determine if we would be fit for moon life. Then, to 'prove they weren't as mean as it seemed, they entertained us at a dance. Just as they were' leaving, the high flying Sydney Eagles swooped down upon us. Defeating them after several days of fierce fighting, they decided to hold a Space Hop to relieve the tension. The next stop-over was on a satellite called Junior Sputnik. There, Wilbur Kukes was appointed pilot, George Grover, co-pilot, Carolyn Forbes, Jim Koerber, and Sharon Cook as members of the crew. The group's Morale was low so we decided to hold a play called Bandits for Breakfast. Our crew wanted to have a paper so we published The Big Horn with Barbara Cox and Jeanie Olenik chosen to head the proiect. We also held a dance for the moonites. The theme chosen was Oriental Gardens. Since we wanted to have souvenirs, we bought some rings with a rainbow-cameo stone. We were very proud to have them especially as a stone had never been allowed in the space ship. At last, the MOON!! We arrived on August 29, 1957. The first thing we had to attend to was setting up a government. Jeanis Olenik was chosen as President, Jim Herbel, Vice President, George Grover, Secretary of State, Lynn Torske, Sec- retary of the Treasury, and Don Benzel, Janice Denny, Carol Kern, and Barry Wolcott as members of the Legislature. We had to have a yearbook, The Big Horn, with Nenette Blake as Editor. We left the moon on May 28, 1958. The Future Teacher movement grew out of the Horace Mann Centennial in 1937 when it was established by the N.E.A. Assembly. The Lucia Darling F.T.A. Club of Hardin High School was chartered in February of l954. The F.T.A. Club seeked to enable its members to study and to identify the qualities, traits, and aptitudes which are basic or related to successful teaching, to acquire an understanding of the history and development of our public schools, their purposes and obiectives, and an appreciation of the contributions they have made to our democratic, tree society, to secure accurate information on vocational Seated: JoAnn Heitzman, Vice President, Jeanie Olenik, President. l opportunities in education, and the special competences required, to aid in self- evaluation, to participate in prevocational activities which are both exploratory and development in nature. Furthermore, the F.T.A. Club seeks to enable the teaching profession to develop selective recruitment programs, to identity capable candidates for teaching and to motivate them to choose appropriate fields of preparation, to offer potential teachers appropriate experiences which will help them develop readiness for college programs of teacher education, to achieve and maintain a balanced supply of qualified teachers. The Pep Club is every bit that its name implies. Its purpose is to promote better school spirit and sportsmanship in Hardin School. The Pep Club has had many enthusiastic and interested members this past year who have given their time and talent to make the club's proiects the success that they were. Some of the proiects were: decorating the gymnasium with pennants bearing the name of each member ot the class A conference, sponsoring a bus to the Laurel football game, sponsor- ing a dance after the Billings Central basketball game, presenting pep skits at the pep rallies, and buying new megaphones for the cheerleaders. 4m 'ir ,' .Q iz ww -ty, I' 7 ' gn' Om 2- ? They learn leadership and meet many other girls through their F.H.A. experiences. This year the Hardin F.H.A. group has accomplished quite a bit. During the summer they decorated a float for the rodeo parade. They hope to keep this up as an annual event. The school year was started off by the initiating of members. They also helped to start a new chapter in Lodge Grass and initiate their members. A lot was learned about F.H.A. at the District lV Convention at Warden which the Hardin and Lodge Grass F,H.A.'s attended together. Another doll raffle was on the agenda next. The girls made clothes for twin dolls and the chapter father, Mr. Showman, donated a nice big trunk. The F.H.A. group also served lunches for the new Key Club. Christmas was cele- brated by a party to which parents were invited. The New Year was started off by a surprise shower for one of the members Then FHA served the n l b f . . . . an ua anquet or the F.F.A. members. The highlight of the spring was the State Convention. Four girls from Hardin attended the Convention and it was quite an honor for all of them. The year was ended by a Parent-Daughter Banquet at which the four top officers for 1959 were installed. . 44 -g, g -5 S .is wg KEY CLUB Ins! row, Belly Abell, Minnie little Light, Sidney Zylrrr, Pearl Hcrt, Judy Allen. Calolvn 7 U Q Gloria Rem 4 q W QX The National Honor Society was ,organized this spring in Hardin High School. 5 L The local chapter has not been given a name yet. The purposes of the organization is to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the developement of character in the students of Hardin High School. Membership in this chapter is based upon scholar- ship, service, leadership, and character. There are three types of members: proba- tionary, active, and graduate. The graduate members have no vote. Active mem- bers become graduate members at graduation. Probationary members, if they main- tain high standards, may become active members in their Junior year. Any probationary or active member who falls below the standards which were the basis for his election to membership shall be dropped from the chapter upon the recom- mendation of the council. The emblem of the society, shown above, may come as a gift, a personal purchase, or an award. ln this case it is an award. However, the title to the emblem rests with the chapter of which he is a member, and, therefore, the emblem can, on the motion of the council, be taken away from the member. The first meeting of the Hardin Chapter was held on Wednesday, May 21, l958.
