SEADER R. WEINBERG R. BENTLEY M. FAW B. RAGLAND LOG A huge transport plane, with a crew of four and sixty-one passengers aboard, took off, in 1948, on a trip through the unexplored domain of H.H.S. Our pilot was Art Kunau and our co-pilot, Mary Lou Meeke. Two other members of the crew were Don Holland and Ruth Kroehler. We chose for our flying colors, purple and gold; flying song. Deep Purple; and flying flower, the orchid. Exam weather conditions made the going rough at times but, in a short while, the skies began to clear, and, before we knew it, we were at the end of our first flight. The second flight started from Sophomore Air Field, with change of crew and an additional seven passengers. We chose Jerry Russell, Don Holland, Frankie Jenkins and George Perkins to direct our flying course. Mr. Robertson and Mrs. Minard were our very efficient navigators. We were forced down on an Afric Isle and were commanded to dress like the natives by the high and mighty seniors. Without much difficulty, we safely landed. Art Kunau, Don Holland, Ruth Kroehler and George Perkins steered us in a straight course after we took off from the Junior Air Field. Our dramatic flyers came Cheaper by the Dozen. We made a forced landing and acted as hosts to a huge banquet and party given for the Seniors. Sophomore stewards and stewardesses aided us by serving. Moonlight and Roses were plentiful. We continued on our way and finally viewed the end of our third flight. We took off on our final flight in the rail of 5U A complete change was in order. Bob Delp, Howard Snively, Bonnie Hart and Le Roy Morse were the skillful crewmen that we chose. The altitude was too high for some; after we took inventory, we discovered that we then had a total of fifty-five passengers. Mrs. Riebeth directed another Air Show which was a huge success. We had a stop-over for one night, at the Junior Air Field, and were royally treated by the occupants there. As we ascended into the air with high spirits, we realized that our last lap of the journey was nearly completed. Our final landing was so beautifully accomplished that we were given awards at a large ceremony in our honor. The future was rather dim for many, but all of us, the Class of '52, pledged to be true to our school, community and nation. The Band was very successful in 1950-52 and gave a number of excellent concerts. They took several trips; playing for the legislators at the Montana State Capitol, at Rocky Mountain College, at Eastern Montana College of Education and at the Billings Public School. During the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn at the Custer Battlefield National Cemetery the Band provided all the music for this occasion. At the Spring Music Festival in Hardin the Band was the only band receiving a superior rating from the judge. The Band also provided music for numerous community events.
