I I % BIG WORM mm m PUBUSUBD BY cH-and-U cM ifb 0 fsJ m '1 m - a L? - k .1' ' 1 ■ r ■ As you go through the pages of this book we hope it will recall many pleasant memories and maybe a few funny ones. We have done our utmost to make this the best annual ever published here, and hope you’ll think we have succeeded. We wish to extend our appreciation to all who have in any way helped to compile this book. 2iO«H n OMD J AMES MURRAY Late in the year, 1949, James Murray moved to a new school in North Dakota. His outstanding leadership had made our days, days of enjoyment and pleasure which we shall never forget. We, the seniors of Hardin High, miss him immensely. Because of the efforts and fine accomplishments of James Murray, our classmate and devoted friend, we hereby dedicate our annual of the golden year, 1950, to him. May he cherish it always. SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE There are essentially two pages to our Democracy Ledger. On one page we list our rights and privileges, on the other our duties and responsibilities. As citizens of a Democracy it is a matter of greatest importance to keep our account in balance, never allowing an overdraft to occur. Assuming that we want to get the most out of our lives, it behooves us to be ever mindful of our responsibilities and to see to it that they are translated into positive results. I hope each one of you will exert your efforts to keep Democracy's Ledger in balance. Sincerely, Elmer Skeie Superintendent PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Again we come around to the end of a year alive with the excitement, fun, and idealism which are part of all the plans and projects of youth. This year has been thoroughly pleasant. A penalty is always exacted at the end of these happy years, though. We have to say goodbye to our senior class. In the Class of 1950 can be found all fine qualities of mind and character Even if that were not true, we would still be their devoted friends, because we have been for so long comrades in the enterprise of their growing up. We shall, always miss them in this high school. Our affection goes with them out into the world. Sincerely, H. R. C., to see the President of the United States. Upon entering the photo-electric-eye controlled door, we saw a short, bright-eyed young lady who was none other than BONNIE BUCKNER. She told us that she was the private secretary to the first woman President, JEAN STEELE. As we were leaving, Bonnie told us not toby-pass Houston, Texas, where we would find BILLIE LOU BURROUGHS, Champion Bronc Rider of Texas. From Billie we learned that FRANKIE FINDLEY, a prominent,Diaper Laundry operator, and DONALD PERKINS, a well known law teacher, were living in Fort Wingate, New Mexico. After a friendly visit with Billie, we departed for Tampa, Florida. While on our tour of Tampa, we soon discovered that four 1950 seniors were vacationing at the Ringling Bros, winter quarters: CHARLOTTE CAMMOCK, a snake charmer; ELEANOR RUDOLF, a famous tight rope walker; BEVERLY TERPENING was making good with her voice as a Carnival Barker. Believe it or not, MARY HELEN SWABY is a world known trapeze artist. Ditching our battered helicopter, we then boarded the Super Flyer that evening; breakfast found us at ROSE MARY LEWIS’S table in New York. She informed us that she was a Lonely Hearts Director. A brief chat with Miss Lewis showed that five of our former classmates were in the Big City. We found LEE JOYCE TAYLOR behind her desk as editor of the New York Times. SYLVIA LOVESWAR was at the Art School competing with Leonardo Da Vinci’s past works. Of course, I mustn’t forget TEDDY BURROUGHS, a well known lover boy and crooner, on Broadway. After quite a lot of looking around, we finally found GLENDA LEAVITT at her dancing school, where she teaches ballet. On 5th Ave., we bumped into CHARLENE DAVIS, who owned an exclusive hat shop. Chicago, at last! In this city we found VERNON GOLLER, M. D., with a sideline Girdle Factory. Making a tour of the city, we learned that JOHN SHELLABARGER was in Washington, trying to get a patent for his latest invention. Can you imagine where we found ROBERT TAYLOR? Well, he was running a day nursery for working mothers. Rev. EDWARD JABS was very glad to see us when we dropped in on him at his parsonage on the outskirts of the city. (CONTINUED) Being a little weary of travel by superspeed, we continued by bus to Detroit, where we met ESCOE LEWIS, who recently bought out Henry Ford. After lunch, Escoe informed us that ANDY TRITSCHLER was the Dean of West Point, where JAMES HAUG was coaching the football team. Escoe, being a prominent citizen, also told us that CAROL CROUCH was the New Ambassador to France. Traveling further west by train, we stepped at Denver, Colorado, for awhile. Naturally, we went directly to Colorado Woman’s College to inquire for EUGENE CROGHAN, who was their Dean. Also teaching there, was MARIE ESHELMAN, Head of Home Ec. Department. Of course, FRANCES BRENNAN was an old maid House Mother to the girls. In town we found WERNER FRIED, personnel manager of Montgomery Ward, on the verge of firing ALTA ROBERTS, his private secretary. On to Hollywood, via Jet-Plane! We paid a brief visit to JEAN KERN, a movie actress, working for film director, JACK IWAKIRI. Jean gave us the addresses of MARILYN WAGNER, who is the wife of PHILIP ZIER, famous cowboy star, and VELMA VENNE, press agent of JOANN LAMMERS, a wealthy night club owner. Homeward bound, we stopped in Seattle, Washington, where we found MARY LOU BENTLY and her pen writing some of the greatest love poems of today. In Butte, Montana, we found LOUISE OLD BEAR, secretary in the F. B. I. office. Louise seemed happy, she told us to be sure to visit BETTY NOURSE, who was due at the airport within the hour. She was just completing a non-stop flight around the world. Back at Hardin, we decided to visit KATHERINE PAULSON, head of the new Atomic Plant. From Katherine, we learned that BETTY REDDEN was still at home writing books. EDWIN DAHLE was a conductor on the Lame Deer Central R. R. What a small world, located in the middle of an atomic and jet-propelled age, where people will continue to find their ways of life! 'M 7 ’H 8 OUT ON GOOD BEHAVIOR: Alvie Blades, Glenn Kunau, Orville Nelson, Hattie Donges, Darlene Willett, Beverly Novark, Rita McMorris, Mary Schaf-feur, Mary Arroyo, Ethel Humphrey, Delores Job, Joan Monger, Eva Tippee. Trustee, Hugh Cottom couldn’t take it? ----- He left for Bozeman in ’48. THE LOG In the year of our Lord, May 25, 1947, A. D., court was held in District 17-H, under the supervision of His Honor, Judge Goller. After eight years in the Hardin Reform School, we were suspended for three months, on good behavior. Lack of proper credentials, (diploma) caused our paroles to be revoked, and we were again sent up for a stretch of not less than four years. We were placed under the supervision of W'arden Goller, and our trustees were Rimel and Rustad. We were joined by fellow inmates, transferred from Crow, who were sent up the river for similiar charges. Fellow arsonist Haug and Knuckles Murray led our band of archcriminals through our first year without solitary confinement. 1947- 1948 A. D. Our second year behind the brick walls was a little easier than the year before. Because of good behavior and alertness, we were promoted to a higher position, much nearer our goal of FREEDOM. Many of our cellmates succeeded in making a break but others soon took their places. Knuckles Murray and his stooge, Weepy Croghan, gained leadership of the gang, by fairly defeating Arsonist Haug at election. Our new trustees, Cbttam and Klies, were at our side while we were put through a severe test of physical torture on the rock pile. 1948- 1949 A. D. Under the stern guidance of Wade and Tuckerman, convict activities were enjoyed. The gang gave a trustees ball in honor of the inmates that were to be released. A talent show was under the name of Don’t Keep Him Waiting.” Our gangland leaders were Knuckles Murray and Fast Fingers Paulson, who took us through our third year in the Big House. 1949- 1950 A. D. At last, only one more year and we’d all have our long-awaited freedom. Carrying our ball and chain under our arms, we put the inmates of Cellblock Ten through a day and night of terror. The inmates serving their third year threw a Farewell Ball for us before our departure from the red brick walls. Under the leadership of Stoolie Buckner and Shakey Taylor, along with the rigid guidance of trustees Olson and Wade, our gang made a happy departure into the outside world to try to make the most of the trades learned in the Hoose-gow. In our years of incarceration, we have enjoyed a full school life with many privileges that we expect to enable us to join hands with the other classes of Hardin High in loyal support of our school, community, and nation.
