% THE BIG HORN rfY fM ?m £? smn 7L 33 DEDICATION To Superintendent W. J. Shirley, who has given us oounsel, who has shown us the paths of cooperative fellowship, and who has inspired onoe more the publication of an annual, the Class of '39 respectfully dedicates the 1939 Big Horn. The successful editing of a year book is an accomplishment any class can be proud of. May I congratulate the Senior Class of 1939. The value of an education is not measured so much in what you know but what you are able to do.The start you got in the Hardin High School should be an inspiration for you to continue on. May success go with you each and every one. W. J. SHIRLEY Supe r intendent ■Hi eWKT m M ss ■. . ■XSffiSCH ■HARDIN HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY Lauren Jesser Joy Clawson. George Hammer Mary Roush. . H. S. Air Corps Training School for the four year course. Assigned to this company by Commander Thompson were Lieutenants Kurtz and O'Hara. The year was spent learning the groundwork of flying, and in June all rookies petitioned and were granted a furlough. Three months later these rookies, a little bit older and a little bit wiser, returned to begin their studies. New leaders were chosen, as it was the custom to change them periodically. The annual Mixer was well attended by the corps. This Christmas brought a week of unexpected leave granted to all students due to poor flying conditions. The year ended uneventfully, and in the spring all students returned to their respective homes for the summer. In September, 1937, tho class again returned to the halls of learning. But this time they came as upperclassmen and ohi so very much more dignified. A few had dropped out and a few were transferred. Lieutenant O'Hara was also transferred and Lieutenant Emmett assigned to the company. Dean Naylor was chosen Sergeant with Bill Sibley, Maxine Livongood, and Roberta Kilpatrick as aides. This was an eventful year, for at last they learned the mystery of flying. An accident near Christmas time, during a test flight, caused Sergeant Naylor to lose control and bail out. Corporal Sibley took over successfully for the rest of the year. Another exciting event took place on the deck of tho U.S.S. Senior, where the annual Hop was held. War-games were indefinitely postponed because of bad flying weather. Again in June the corps received a three-month furlough The next fall, we find that these same cadets return for tho last time to their studies, Lauren Jesser,Joy Clawson, George Hammer, and Mary Roush were chosen as leaders. The year passed quickly, and before they knew it, they were almost ready for promotion. All of the Senior Cadets basked in the glory of their superior standing. They were given a farewell party by the Junior Cadets on the night of April 28th and were sent out, each to pilot his own plane,by Commander-in-Chief Shirley on the 18th of May, 1939.
