It is fortunate for Hardin that there has been such a famous and capable man in this important position and that he has returned to give his untiring efforts to the further development of the Conservatory. The personnel of the entire Conservatory is unusually strong this year as shown by the programs given by the different departments. The number of Conservatory students has been greatly increased as 6075 of those enrolled in literary work are taking some subjefct at the Conservatory, besides those who came here for music alone. Hardin always gives the students an opportunity to hear great artists. Mme. Caroline Lazzarri, contralto was one of the most charming artists Hardin has ever heard. All the music lovers of Mexico and Hardin were delighted with her excellent singing, gracious stage presence, and dramatic power. The variety of selections provided an opportunity to judge her musical and artistic interpretations. Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow Lieurance, two American artists gave us a program of Indian melodies which lNIr. Lieurance gathered from the Indian tribes to use in his compositions. He has spent a great deal of his life among the Indians collect- ing their tribal music, and racial characteristics in song. Mrs. Lieurance, an Indian soprano, brought us the beautiful, haunting songs in a pure, rich voice. Their program was unique and delightful. In addition to the contact of the students with great artists, practical and personal development is sought. This is carried out by the orchestra and chorus under the able leadership of two of the Conservatory faculty. This year the orchestra more than doubled its previous membership. It gave a splendid concert on March the twenty-seventh, consisting of difficult numbers by the best composers. There have been many opportunities for playing in public, at school, and at town functions. Under the capable leadership of Miss Pilcher the members have gained much in orchestral experience and have been able to please their audiences. . The chorus of forty members is under the direction of Miss Baker, head of the voice department. They have worked hard over music, by the better com- posers, and have rendered their selections in a musical and artistic manner. They sang in Chapel and gave a Christmas program and had charge of the carols then. The Public.School Music course is given to music students wishing to teach. It is a full, two year course and one of the newest and most important given at Hardin. Educators of today have found that children respond to music quickly if they are taught correctly. If America is to become a nation of musical artists, a foundation for the love and appreciation of good music must be formed in very tender years. Every form of music is studied so that the teachers may be able to appeal to the emotions of every child. The students at Hardin are studying by observation and practice teaching to do this very thing-make musical Ameri- cans out of the coming generation. Upon completing the music work here, each student must give her graduation recital. It takes most of the senior year to prepare a program for this occasion because the highest grade of music is used. Professor Guerne is graduating two of his pupils this spring, Jean Bridges and Willie lVIorris. Miss Baker has Margaret Rainwater, Zelpha Piper, Winifred Evans graduating in voice. Miss Pilcher graduates Genevieve Gore in violin. The public school music department under Miss Jones gives five prospective teachers to the public schools, Sara Bartlett, Ruth Wilkerson, Lucille Newton, Dorothy Fick, and Jean Bridges. Page 58
