DAN RAY '! gX COACH POLLOCK fu it -fi 19 HUNTER GARY MILLS The 1955-56 Wilclc'at Baselmallers gave Cat fans their first glimpse of a proficient baseball team in three or four seasons. The '55-'56 Cats had all of the potential to he conference champions but seemed to melt under pressure when the chips were down. They ended the season with a 10-4 mark and an 11-6 over-all record. Lakeland politely dumped the Cats 3-0 in their season's opener. Then suddenly catching on fire. the Vvildcats sprinkled base hits all over Farr Field to capsize Ar- cadia. Bartow. and Lake Wales in their next three encounters. Running headlong into Lakeland again. the Wildcats came home purring. 11-3. The 'Cats then won their next six games intermingled with non-conference losses to Venice. 5-0. and Avon Park. 6-4. Entering the Southwest Florida Conference tournament in Bartow and boasting a perfect conference record of 10-0. the Cats squared off against Lake Wales in the first round. The Highlanders played some sad music out of their hagpipes as they were humhled 10-0. and the Cats advanced to the second round. The Wilclc'ats tasted hitter defeat for the first time in the second round against Haines City. Wvavlon Lee. Haines City hurler. provided the initial snap and crackle to pop the Cats' winning streak at eleven. Still stunned by the previous night's thumping. the Wildcats were outlasted by Plant City. the next night. 10-T. and thus eliminated from the tournament. Even though the 1955-56 Wildcats did not quite live up to expectations their fine play served as a preliminary showing what is to come.
