Past-Present-Futu re Behind us, behind that big white door with the heavy hrass icnocicer are two years oi coiiege. Liice ieaves tossed in the autumn wind, are memories oi two years of friendships, dances, classes, and exams. Like ieaves, gathered in a heap oi coioriui profusion, are our past happy days. We are about to he scattered again. As we once gathered, we are going away, in separate directions to aii parts oi the country. After today, we shaii drift hacic to our respective homes, to picic up where we had ieit oii: oider, more efficient, and trained to do our johsg hetter citizens, because of our training here at Harcum. For this is June tiith, nineteen hundred and iorty-iour. Here we stand, in front of that white door in our gray caps and gowns, sadiy perhaps, waiting to march to the services that wiii graduate us into the woridg a world that needs us, and that we sincerely hope we are equipt to meet. For this is a war worid, a worid oi strife and hate and iii-gotten gains: a worid oi hard fighting, for preservation of what we hoid dear. And We are doing our part. And we don't date as we used to in peacetime, ior with many iiances, husbands and brothers overseas, dating seems too frivolous. This is the worid we face on a warm June morning. This is the worid we are to he a vitai part oi. But what wiii the morning oi June fifth, nineteen hundred and titty-iour find us doing? it wiii find some of us starting to work in offices, nurseries, hospitals, and studios. it wiii find more oi us seeing husbands oili to woric, taking care oi and cherishing homes. There Wiii he marketing without points, there wiii he as many pairs of shoes as we can aiiord, and the roads wiii he streaming with cars that sunny morning. The pay-as-you-go-income-tax wiii he a thing oi the past, and coid nights wiii mean warm homes. But most oi aii there wiii he happiness, happiness founded on peace and security. And it's up to us.
