MARINER 67 ASHTABULA HARBOR- HIGH SCHOOL ASHTABULA, OHIO , , . .........E:::.::.::::E:....::....:3:1:,1. . .. , Beside the blue waters of Lake Erie, our school stands. Day and night the waves r011 ceaselessly against the shore, and each new morning the tide rushes m. Waves of enthusiasm and spiril are re- flected In those who share in a combined effort to reach a commOD goal. The final realization of a job well done, whether it be a beautiful prom or a successful performance, results in waves of pleasure and emhnsiasm. Waves of understanding flow between stu- dents and teachers, developing a deeper ap- preciaLiOH of our world; for, as the tide goes out, so must we. Jain ?! -4. 4-5::4'. DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1967 of Harbor High School, dedicate our yearbook to Miss Betty Jean O'Dell. Besides teaching Junior English, speech, drama and debate, Miss O'Dell still finds time to sponsor the Junior and Senior class plays and the annual Variety Show. Those who have known her will never forget her patience, understanding, and sense of humor which have contributed so much to the success of our class plays. Therefore, we thank you, Miss O'Dell and salute you this year and in the future for your part in making our years at Harbor years to remember. DR. ROGER T. THE CLASS OF 1967 The Class of 1967 will be the last class to graduate from Harbor High that attended school here since the seventh grade, Although we weren't completely a part of the senior high activities, it was exciting just being around upperclassmen, and we gained early the experience of seeing what high school life was like. In our freshman year we officially became part of high school life. As activities, our class held bake sales and sold toothbrushes and Mariner stickers. By the end of the year we were seasoned veterans, but we had no idea of the hard work that was in store for us. Our sophomore year was one long scramble to earn money for our prom. We held the traditional sophomore bottle drive. For a month Fawcett Gym was a great glass menagerie of empty pop bottles, some of which broke the solitude of the lobby with an occasional crash. In the spring of the year we held our car wash. After hours of work in the hot sun, we finally polished our last car to a brilliant luster. We emerged grimy, butwith a deep feeling of satisfaction. The excitement mounted all through our junior year. The Prom Committee held regular meetings to make plans, while the rest of the Class wondered what the theme would be. Finally came the day when we were assigned to our committees and began working. In the beginning, spirits ran high, but as the week wore on, and we worked harder each day to finish in time, we grew more serious . We transported mountains of rocks from the gulf. Each rock in its own small way adorned the stream and added to the rustic beauty of the waterfall. Trees and bushes sprang from the sawdust gare den, while frail geishas peered from behind transparent lattice works. When it was finished at lust, we could look at our completed effort, and the beauty of it made up for the aching muscles and backs --;i little, anyway. At last came our senior year and the odd but exciting feeling that now we were at the top. We finally were those seniors who had seemed so far away from us in the seventh grade. Our minds are filled with many memories: Of the many fine teachers who have helped us on our way; Of some of our Classmates who were not allowed to graduate with us; Of aill the scrambling and tearing of hair that went on m the journalism room to get the yearbook out on time: Of Miss Boyce's oi'tvrepeated saying: That's not my comma. That's your comma until you tell me WHY you put it there , 0f seniors walking around the halls muttering a strange list that sounded something like, Knight, squire, yeoman, two nuns, three priests. . . and so on endlessly. We would also like to thank all the people connected with the school for putting up with us for six years. We know they have prepared the Class of 1967 to venture forth and make their own waves in the world, Pictured at the right LIED senior class advisers Mrs. Lila O'Connor and MI. Ed Armstrong. A year of planning and a long, tiring week of work changed the horner cocoon of our high school gym into a crepepaper world of dreams made real for one night. A huge buddhu cov- ered one wall and dominated both the garden path with its Stream and pool, and thc lighted silhouettes of Oriental geishas facing the gar- den on the opposite wall. C001, tranquil tones of blue and green provided the background for the gay scene of couples enjoying to the fullest their one night in paradise. Complementary to the magical night were our King and Queen, Dennis Jarvi and Paula Rennick, who danced to the music 01' the George Parrish Orchestra . At midnight the pace changed as the couples were entertained by Tony and the Bandits until finally the morning sun heralded the coming of a new day and the close of. our Oriental Par- adise. GEORGE Boston at the turn of the century set the stage for the Junior Class play, The Late George Apley. Directed by Miss Betty Jean O'Dell, the play re- volves around the inability of George Apley, portrayed by Chuck Ballo, to move out of the narrow world of custom and tradition in which he had been raised. Through the love affairs of his son and daughter, George Apley is forced to re -examine the world he lives in and the life he leads . APLEY,a The members of his family point out the choice George must make between living his life the way his father and grandfather did as custom dictates, or living it in such a way as to make new customs . As the plot develops, his two children must make their choices too, His daughter breaks away completely to live her own life, but George and his son finally return to and become im- mersed in their world of unchallenged tradition. Of course, no trip is perfect and our idyllic Dreamer's Holiday was interrupted temporarily by Cinderella, a nightmare presented by the National Thespiuns . Last Of all, we would like to thank you, the class of '67, for you are the '67 Mariner, and without you there would be no story to tell. OUR Regine Drasdo from deelsdorf, West Germany, was Harbor's exchange student during the 1966-67 school year. She lives with her parents, Mr . and Mrs. Armin Drasdo, her 14-year-old brother, Helmut, and her 21-year-old sister, Birgit. During her stay in Ashtabula, her American parents were Mr. and Mrs. John D. Huggins. Jill and Judy, who at- tend Harbor High School, and Peggy, who is ten years old, were her three American sisters. With her brother Peter away at college, Jill jokingly re- marked, Having Reg in our family adds to my father's harem. When asked her opinion of American food, all Reg could say was, I like it. She said American food is sweeter and ice cream is not eaten as much in Ger- FRAULEIN many. One of the biggest differences in eating habits is that Germans drink beer with their meals . Reg has a wide variety of interests including sports, music, reading, dan- cing, and acting. Her favorite hobby is sports, especially basketball and swim- ming. She has become a member of the Y.W.C.A. swim team. With her warm smile and cheerful, out-going personality, she has shown that aside from customs, teenagers the world over are basically the same. The H.H.S. chapter of the American Field Service made Regine's stay in America possible. The adviser is Mr. Lowell Lamb, and the student representatives are Grace Johnson, senior, and David Flower, junior. ROW 1: Mary Jo McMillan, Susan Rice. The highlight of the campaigning was the presentation of the candidates to the student body in a special assembly. On Friday morning the ballots were cast. creating excitement for both the voters and cun- didates, During the day the skies were threatening, but the night of the game was perfect. The first event of the evening was a parade of the candidates in their convertibles led by the band from Harbor to Warmer Field. At half time, as the band played Climb Every Mountain, and Give My Regards to Broadway, the can- didates were driven around the field to the home stands, where they were escorted from their cars by their fathers. Cheers rose from the crowd as Peggy Merritt was crewned Home- coming Queen for 1966. The formal coronation took place the fol- lowing night at the Homecoming Dance, tra- ditionally sponsored by the Senior Girls' Club. S N m T A K M G R O Q ROW 1: Mr. Mnrru Blgtkv.
