ASHTABULA, OHIO Individualism is a fatal poison. But individuality is the salt of common life. In each person the to is a store of individuality. In some people this individuality is barely perceptible; in others it is very evident. True individuality lends a strength to its possessor. It is the foundation upon which destiny depends. School life affords many opportunities for a student to nurture his own individuality. But anyone who is attuned only to its academic aspects will overlook much of the material from which individuality may come- -not only communion with books and learning but also the inter- play of mind with mind, of personality with personality. Observer or participant, every person who regularly inhabits a school is involved in its social, cultural, athletic, scholastic, 017 other activities. These pages will reflect Harborites in many such in- volvements, some as observers, some as actors, all adding to their individuality, the salt of common life. Miraculously, the weather eliminaLeci one long day from the constant struggle with books and schedules. Other days were brightened by the late afternoon loneliness of classrooms and the thrill of rally sounds. Spirit and pride are a tradition at Harbor. Their expression may he a5 appa rent as a pep 3550111ny or as obscure as individual achievement . Two of the more. apparent d 11: nur hand and the It's Academic contestants. We reach beyond books for the most im- portant pants 01' an education: the experi- unces which create mature individuals. Harbor's success or failure must be meas- ured here. Our experiences at Harbor this year have, we believe, advanced us all in that direction. DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1900, Harbor lligh School, dedicates its yearbook to Mrs. lidna Bcckmun. WC 411' cspucidlly priVilUgctl 10 take this oppurtunity to cxprcas 0th sincerest appreciation for her xxurm friendship and guidance . Thought of by all Harbor students as much more than secretary to thc prilr cipal, Mrs. Beckman has cheerfully ful - filled the difficult task Ol' being friend, adviser, confcssor, and oltcn muthcr 10 all Harboritcs. Through her deep concern for the wcll-being of our School as a whole and for the countless individuals who come to her with personal problems, Mrs. Beckman has become the perfect bridge between student and faculty, a Very im- portant relationship in any school . To be sure, years later when we re- turn Lo Harbor, we know she will greet us with the same smile and will remem- ber us . And we shall certainly rvmcrmhu r hC'r. Va. S R m N E S As we near our graduation, we look back in our memories and experiences as high school students In '62 we left the peaceful world of our seventh and eighth grades to enter the more mature and active world Of high school. We set goals for ourselves, not only as individuals but also as members of a group. As freshmen we sold sweatshirts, displayed Our dramatic ability in Feudin' Mountain Boys, and held bake sales. Our sophomore year began with the consolidation of Harbor, Ashtabula, and Saybrook schools. On the first day of school that year everyone was hesitant about meeting the new students, teachers, and administrators and doubtful about the Change to the six period day. Despite these innovations we found courage to become and to continue as a whole, especially as we adjusted to these new situations. In a short time we were saying, Now don't forget your bottles for the sophomore class or Cometo the Snack Shack , for these were our special projects for the year. Now our Class, larger and more confident, was looking forward to the junior year, the halfway point of our high school career. THE CLASS OF I966 Senior Class officers are Penelope Robinson, secretary; Jo Ann Macaulay, vice presi- dent; Jennifer Peterson, presi- dent; and Lynda DeBold, treasurer. Advisers to the Senior Class are Richard Lenhart and Salvadore Carnabucci. SENIORS OF HARBOR HIGH At the beginning of our junior year the class officers and advisers selected the prom committee to plan the prom. We worked with a zeal such as no other class had shown. Taking orders for Homecoming mums was next on our agenda, We worked late into the afternoon, keeping our flowers fresh to show that our Class could accomplish any goal. Then came the long -awaited arrival of our class rings. To us they symbolized many years of hard work and 0f striving to do our best to succeed. Our class was the first here to have the oval-shaped rings, a mark of our individuality. Another project was selling candy. Through this ambitious drive we earned enough money to end most of our financial worries. This and all projects of the preceding years were held for the purpose of raising money for our junior- senior prom, which was called The Inaugural Ball. The spirit, enthusiasm, and Cheerfulness with which we all worked was a sight to see: the building of the columns, the garden walk, the fish pond, and the Capitol. There were the all too familiar cries of Keep those seniors out of the gym! Yes, that big event came and went, but it will be hard for us to forget. In the senior assembly at the end of that year, the graduating class had us take an oath to uphold the senior pride and honor. This marked the real start of another fun-filled year for us. At last we were BIG seniors! We were approaching the turning point of our lives. Our year was filled with guidance meetings, tests, and conferences . But it was far from all work and no play. Going along with the Christmas spirit, many of us decorated our lockers appropriately. After first semester exams there were more busy days: measur- ing for caps and gowns, ordering announcements, and other chores. The year was passing, and we were increasingly aware that graduation was drawing near. Although outwardly we could not wait for the big day, inwardly we felt a sad- ness at having to leave behind the familiar halls and faces, to enter into a strange world of new people and places. We will always cherish the guidance of our faculty, our joys and sorrows, and most ofall the solid education we have received here. DENNIS AHO KENNETH ALTONEN MICHAEL W. Jan migu is con- soled by her maid and millionaire boyfriend. The glorious week of construction . . . THE INAUGURAL BALL The car stopped slowly at the curb when from the entrance walked the doorman, dressed in stunning black tails. He escorted her to the door while her date left to pa rk the car. Soon this couple and many more were seen walking into our Inaugural Ball. The lobby was draped in white, and as the couples entered the transformed gym, they saw the beautiful white columns at the edge of the terraced garden walk, the fish pond, the dec- orated tables, and the mural of the Capitol. Soon they were walking along the terrace, excitement mounting inside them. Having left their wraps at the hatcheck, the couples des- cended into the ballroom. We inaugurate our President and First Lady. Enjoying the fruits of our labor Throughout the evening the juniors and sen- iors danced to the music of the Premiers. At 10:30 Nancy Stapleton and Allen Ray were announced as our President and First Lady. Then came the traditional break- -the serv- ing of the food. At midnight the After Prom party began. During the latter part of the evening every- one danced to the beat of the Bumble Bees. As the evening drew to a Close, all realized that this prom would soon be over, but deep in their hearts they knew they would always remember the beauty and excitement of the Inaugural Ball . . . . . that day of destruction. Since it is an honorary organization, it does not have officers or regular meetings. At the beginning of this year there were only two student members, Brian Salmen and Suzanne Smalley, the two yearbook editors. As the year's activities of yearbook and newspaper staffs proved their merit, others were able to qualify, so that the group increased in quantity and quality. To qualify, a student must be of junior or senior standing, he must rank in the upper third of his class at the time of his selection, and he must be recommended for outstanding work in connection with a school publication. Initiations are held, usually in the spring, and there is a banquet fol- lowing the initiation. HOMECOMING QUEEN l965 Our Homecoming Queen for 1965 was Penny Robinson, pictured at the upper right. Members of her Court Were Lynda DeBold, at upper left, and, in the lower row from left to right, Karen Jopperi, Jayne Madison, Emily Genato, and Susie Erickson. 24th.. -' HOMECOMING, l965 The week of Homecoming was a rainy and windy one. Everyone hoped that the weather would clear, but it didn't. Throughout the first half of the Homecoming game, Harbor vs. Conneaut, it drizzled. Although the weather was bad, the Harbor Mariners were leading at half-time, 6-0. The candidates, nominated by the Senior Class on October 1, . . . Lynda DeBold, Susie Erickson, Emily Genato; our honorary candidate, Karen Jopperi, Jayne Madison, and Penny Robinson . . . were anxiously awaiting the half-time. Their escorts . . . Roger Hall, Brian Salmen, Ron Kantorak, Ken Frisbie, Dave Tobias, and Greg Schillo . . . drove them out on the field as it began to rain again. The 1964 Homecoming Queen Jayne Mar- tino presented the Homecoming Queen for 1965. Penny Robinson. The co -captains of the football team, Al Burns and Mike Potter, crowned her, while Mr. Baker, our principal, gave her a bouquet of yellow roses with pur- ple ribbons. At the Homecoming Dance Saturday eve- ning, the coronation ceremonies were carried out by Doug Payne, Student Council President. Penny was crowned with a floral wreath. The Premiers played for this dance which was sponsored by the Senior Girls' Club. The night was a memorable one, especially for Penny and her court.
