HUFF The claw of 1905, Harbor High School, dedicates its yearbook to Robert L. HUN. Our class adviser for six years, N11 . Huff hag worked hard to make our years . hcrc happy and worthwhile. Touching Aliiorican History and Govern- ment, Sociology. Economics, and World History, he is a vcrsuLiie mem- ber of the Harbor faculty. Besides his wurk with our cluss--our fish dinner, smorgasbord, and prom, among other projects, Mr. Huff is adviser to the Junior Red Cross Club. Also, hC has been in Charge of the Youth Govcrmncnt Program ever since its inception at Harbor High. Mr. Huff is an asset to his community. He is an active member of Lake Ave. Methodist Church. He teaches an adult night course at Ashtabula High. WC dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Huff because he has dedicated so much of MR. ROBERT L- HUFF his time and himself to us. We have come to know Mr. Huff not only as a teacher, but also as a friend, and the pleasure has been ours. . '4 Hr ' Anni xi Working, smiling, teaching Mr. Edward Armstrong, MI. Robert Huff. ADVISERS The two head directors for the colossal production called the Class of '65 were Robert Huff and Edward Armstrong. Both have been working on the show with us since we entered the world of higher edu- cation in seventh grade. We think they deserve a special round of applause at this time. We will always remember those projects--fish fries, smorgasbords, Homecoming mums, class plays that helped us to develop a spirit of cooperation and, surprisingly, made money, too. And how could we ever forget the prom. Mr. Huff and Mr. Armstrong helped us create what we think has set a precedent for excellence in HHS proms . For their patience, hard work, and understanding, our many, many thanks go to Mr. Huff and Mr. Armstrong. Our theater is directed by our adminis- tration. Just as a play cannot possible sur- vive without directors to encourage, adviSe, and enlighten the actors, Harbor High School can certainly not exist without our directors, the administration. In a play the director cannot act a player's part for him, but hr: can and does show him how to do it. At Harbor High School the teachers cannot learn for the students. but they can and do, open our minds to learning. IRECTORS . Mr. J. B. E. Baker, Principal MI. Murray M. Blake, Ass't Principal In an account of u sucewsmi ascent of Ml. Everest, the :mllml' told how camps were set 41 MM! ous heights--10,LMU feet uud vuth additional 4,000 feet. We m-ver would have reached the Mllnmil, he said, if we had thought of 11 11S 41 single climb, but we were able to reach our goal by gomg from camp to camp. I congratulate you lfor having reached one of your goals. Most of you have Lukeu the highway this year from camp to camp, from minor goal to minor goal. This climb of life hus been, though sometimes difficult, infinitely worth the effort. Each goal you reach 011 the high- way through school makes the next goal closer and your de- termination greater; each fail- ure works the opposite way. So, underelussmen, :15 you wil- ness the seniors, who have succeeded, make your resolu- tion stronger to go from minor goal to minor goal until you have reached your major aim. J. 13. 1i. Baker When Thomas A. Edison explored the possibilities of the strange energye source culled electricity, he had a vision that few men of his time under- stood. Today the vision of men con- cerning the exploration of the unknown and the expansion of the known is not hampered by the lack of understanding. We know man has only scratched the surface. Graduates of 1965, your school years establish the kind of adult you will be and largely determine your degree of success in life. You have been led through the gates of knowledge, making possible your future career and training you for the strenuous pace of a fast- moving, complex society. You have not completed your education but just opened the door, knowing that education is the seed of all work. Murray M. Blake Yours ago, a very common Class motto wus Hitch Your Wagon to a Star. This motto may be an actual fact of life during your lifetime. Your school hopes that it has provided you with the basic building tools of learning-xtools which you will further develop and use for the benefit of L111 mankind. Best wishes are extended to each and every one of the graduates. As you have been a credit to your home and school in the pa st, may your life he lived in such a way that you will continue to ho a credit to the institutions which have brought you to the thre shold of adult Citizenship. Just as the leading role actors are the essential part of any show; so are the seniors very important to our yearbook. These seniors have achieved their slams through many years of hard work a? deserve the first spot in our year- b k. J , . SENIORS KKJA NOSTALGIA i65 The class of 1965 has done much to im- mortalize itself in this final year with such exploits as the famous Chiquita banana campaign, during which it was impossible not to find a Chiquita banana book cover on English or chemistry books . There were such things as foot- prints on ceilings and phantom seniors who never failed to liven up a history movie. Senior lockers always held sur- prises for those who defied the signs that read private . There were days when seniors stumbled in late for fifth period because the luncheon group at Mrs. Stanbery's delicatessen ran overtime. Remember when John Palo dressed up as Santa Claus and he and a group of earolers singing Jingle Bells visited each classroom and threw candy canes in the spirit of Christmas? Always ready to broaden their cultural horizons, one group of ladies sat in the restroom reading Peter Rabbit. Un- fortunately, the book fell out of the win- dow and they raced madly outside to re- cover it before anyone could learn that it was in reality a Helen Gurley Brown best seller . ' Mark Plagakis came closest to martyr- dom during his adventures in chemistry lab, and Dave DeLuea wins the look-a- like award for his realistic impersona- tion of Mr. Clean. Our famous Phi Tau Singers appeared on Cleveland's Big Five Show. Our It's Academic group not only made a good showing, but returned with some interesting mementoes of the trip, among them a citation for restroom cleanliness. Everyone knows who the seven Gold- water Girls were in the election. Remember how close to physical vio- lence our senior debaters camel? Our Margrit amused her speech class by proposing to move the pyramids to Ashtabula. She later withdrew her motion when Joe Moroski asked how she would feel is the Alps were moved to the Gobi Desert. As we have left our indelible mark on teachers, so have they influenced us. Miss Boyce never failed to boost morale by saying, If you feel persecuted, I'll oblige . Mrs . Bartish did her best in beautifying the school with Ladies, get those clips out of your hair! Mr. Blake kept us on our toes: Your attention, please! Your attention, please! Mr. Wasulko always gave us bonus math problems on our tests, like How much dirt is there in a hole three feet deep and three feet wide? Mr. Moe's college-bowl type review at the end of American History in our junior year provided stimulating educa- tion. He called his game the buzzer- wuzzer-ding-a-ling. The curtain closes now and makes our senior year but a pleasant memory to turn to in the future years and never to be forgotten . David J. Hyslop, was quiet and shy, but also warm and friendly. His perennial smile has been missed in the halls of Harbor High School . To us, he was Gil, and we won't soon forget the many fish stories he would tell after one of his camping trips. He loved the outdoors, and often went hunt- ing. Gil enjoyed football and spent much time scrimmaging with his friends. Although he is now parted from us, we shall not forget our classmate, John Hyslop. Margrit Judith Bertschi was Harbor's for- eign exchange student for the 1964-65 school year . This petite Swiss miss lives with her grandmother in Safenwil, Switz- erland. She has a twenty-one-year old brother named Hans Peter and a pet: dog named Jutta. Margrit's American parents are Dr. and Mrs . Carl Pearson. Their daughter Betsy, a junior, has been Margrit's Sister during her year of study in Ashtabula. Tne Pear sons have two sons, John and Peter, who are away at college. They also have a French poodle named Michel . When Margrit was asked her Opinion of America, she stated simply, Americans are very nice and so much fun. On Ash' tabula, she laughed and said, It is so hard to say anything. I like it very much. Margrit views our yearbook. OUR SWISS MISS Pearson, Margrit Dr. Pearson plays for a small, but enthusiastic audience. She added pcnsively, That sounds like a generalization. I don't like generalizations because they sound stupid, but to say '1 love it' is the simple truth. Recalling Margrit's early days in America, Betsy said, We had some amusing lan- guage problems at first. I remember that Margrit had never seen marshmallows, jello, or walk-in closets before. She also stated that she especially enjoys having a sister because she had never had one before. Mr. Lowell Lamb is adviser of the HHS Chapter of the American Field Service, which sponsored Margrit's stay here. As Alice entered her wonderland through 4 looking glass, starry-eycd prom-gocrs entered a sparkling storybook dance through an enchanted ele- vator. Our hard labor of the previous week had transformed Fawcett Gym into a New York wonder- land that was so realistic that the entrance of Broadway celebri- ties would not have surprised us at all. The sophomore pages and hat- check girls greeted us at the door. The chandeliers sparkled blue and red, reflecting the colors of thc lighted walls . The Manhattan skyline at mid- night, the fountain, and the mu- sic gave all in attendance that special feeling of accomplish- ment . The King and Queen of the prom, the highlight to the magical eve- ning, were Terry Anthony and Sally Sulin . N A T TI A H N A M THURBER CARNIVAL The first glimpse of men and women gayly riding red, blue, and green rabbits swept the audience into the mad, merry mood of A Thurber Carnival . Wild scenes such as the one in which Grant surrendered to Lee and another in which a billionaire banker was saved from ductal obstreosis sustained the zany atmosphere through the final Word Dance. Yes, our wild, wild junior class play was in the established tradition for '65. During the weeks of rehearsals, the cast was captured by the spell of madness woven by James Thurber. There were sword fights in the stair wells, and one group from the Macbeth Mystery Murder sketch left a pumpkin on Mr. Moe's desk. And there were many more gaieties that made our junior play unforgettable, ending with a regular orgy of a cast party. Members of the cast were Jerry Salmen, Christine Wilkinson, Leta J0 Diffenbaeher, Joe Moroski, Lonnie Piipponen, Bill Rabell, Holly Leers, Eugene Perehak, John Loftus, Trudy Towers, Greg Mossford, Joan Bent, Pamela Spacek, Steve Mongonel, Barbara Merritt, Bob Stanbery, Jim Surbella, John Callihan, Penny Ray, Mary Ellen Anderson, Marsha Decker, Sandra Robinson, Mark Plagakis, Lois Olsen, Cheron Gelber, Linda Brown, Janice Watt, Carol Izzi, Becky Greenawalt, Bill Shaul, Cheryl Pearson, Sue Whipple, and Connie Barrickman. MANY MOODS OF MARCH The Variety Show, probably more than any other event of the school year, is truly repree sentative 0f the student body . Many hours are spent rehearsing and perfecting the various acts in the weeks preceding the show. This year, under the direction of Miss Betty Jean O'Dell and Mrs. Helia Lehtinen, the students of Harbor High School did an excellent job presenting the Many Moods of March. Our Homecoming Court-- Pamela Nelson, Marianne Wolfe, Gloria. Little, Cathy Williams, Margrit Bertschi, Jeanne Jokilchto, Mary Ellen Anderson, Jayne Mar- tino, queen; and Joyce Grippi. After a week's long campaign our homecoming queen had been selected. The entire student body had voted for their favorite from a. court of nine giris chosen by the senior class . All the votes had been cast and we were anxiously awaiting the game and the coronation . The day of the homecoming game begun 011a rather tlim note. It rained most of the afternoon, and we began to fear that the ceremonies would be ruined by the wet weather. However, as the sun begun to set, the ruin stopped and the weather cleared . At the start of halftime, our spirits were high; we were on our way to winning our first foot- ball game. As the teams left, the baud came on and marched a crown formation. The nine queen candidates were driven around the field in eon- vertibles by their escorts . The cars stopped in front of the home stands, and the candidates were escorted from the cars by their fathers .
