You have looked forward to Commencement for ati least six years. As it dawns upon you that this is the end - Commencement - you will have mingled feelings of Joy and regret, Joy that you have succeeded, regret that you must part with so many friendsg that you must enter a new environment of life. Graduation is not the end of study, it 1s really the beginning, Now you must not only study books, but you must intro- spect yourself, Now you must find your interests and abilities. Now you must decide what you wish to do, continue your education or start in some life occupa- tion, r Your success in life will continue to be based on the kind of report you receive, On the Report Card of Life you will be graded on your ability to think analytically and critically. Thinkers always plan the world's work, They chart the direction of progress or the woes of all generations, Analytical thinkers are willing to work hard themselves and they require others to do the same, You must develop attractive personality traits, those which are depend- able and regular if you are to have the ability to inspire confidence in others, Only to the degree that you can gain the confidence of your fellow- man will you succeed in gaining worthy recognition for yourself. As you enter this new realm of life, you will find a very competitive world, Others will be trying to gain from life the things you value most. You will find that you must be tolerant to the hostile action of groups who seek to use ruthless methods to achieve their ends. A most commendable trait that any human being can possess is the cour- age of conviction, We must not be so straitlaced in our thinking that we cannot think and act with others - to do this, we lose our influence, We must not be so compromising that we lack moral principles - to do this will take away all our purpose for living and render us useless to ourselves and those who need us, Good social tact and finesse will greatly aid you, even when you are in the minority. Finally, on the Report Card of Life you will be graded according to your faith - faith in things - faith in people, This faith will express 1t- self in your ability to resist fear. Companionship with others in the experiences of religious living will always bring you to the realization that the great achievements of this world exemplify the Golden Rule, We think you have made your contribution to the heritage of good educa- tion in our schools, As you leave us, we will miss you, We hope that we who remain are better because of our associations with you. The faculty, Board of Education, and I hope that you experience the Joys of a great Commencement, We wish you Godspeed as you leave us, I I You are approaching the climax of SUPT. RALPH S. Just a moment ------ the old crystal ball is nearly all shined up in preparation for its annual delving into the past, Theref It's beginning to clear and as the mist fades away, we can visualize a typical September day back in 1939 when fourteen of the present seniors, wide-eyed with anticipation of their first contact with education, entered Miss T1lton's kindergarten class at the Washington Building. A1- though a little frightened at first, Shirley Norris, Pamela Bush, Clyde Alckin, Gloria Hershberg, Carol Lackson, Carl Lackson, ward Johnson, Jane Braski, Norma Krans, Dick Sievlnen, Carole Rennick, Rosemary Kondas, Martha Ellen Johnson, and David Depue soon were right at home with the rabbits, white mice, Ramsey the turtle, the trapeze, the naps, and ------ the other children, The days passed quickly and soon we were big first graders and Perry Johnson, Ronnie Jarvela, and Herman Ritonen had joined the Class of '53, Those were the days when we began to learn to read, looked forward to the much longed for quarter-holidays and cavorted on the stage in the operetta nSpr1ng Glown as Merry Bees and Little Rain Drops. Kathleen Butler was the nnew girln in second grade and she was just in time to play first triangle in the circus band for HThe Spring Circusn, Before we knew it, we were third-graders and Lola Backlund and Charles Yocum had Joined the ranks, Ah, yes, 1943, It was just a decade ago that we worked long and hard on a life-size paper mache polar bear under the able supervision of Miss Edna Johnson. Clyde Aickin and David Depue were fish- ermen in the operetta HSeasons of Happ1ness,n and the current rage was to be a member of a Play Mate Club, Fourth grade passed quickly and we were fifth graders before we knew it. The new additions were Louise Michelson, Harry Green, Linda Doxsie, and Loretta Eyajan, who fascinated all the boys with her long, dark curls. At last our great moment arrived and we became sixth graders. The long awaited for privileges of singing nSilent Nightn at the Christmas pro- gram and doing the Maypole dance on May Day were ours, Lois Matha and Duke Gregory increased our class by two. Martha Ellen Johnson and Pamela Bush portrayed Wimble and Nlmble in nThe Magic Christmas Belln and Harry Green gave his rendition of Hwhite Chr1stmas', After bidding grade school adleu, we stood on the threshold of our first year of Junior high, Betsy Lehtinen, Dick Farrar, and Dick Eskelln were the nnew kidsu this year. Seventh grade ------ first open house, new clubs to Join and Dr, Wenner's immortal WOle Sjarsonn were the highlights, Bonnie Lesperance and Paul Carlo became Harborites in eighth grade, This was the year that we dutifully studied pictures of Mrs, Casbourne's chickensnset up around the blackboard and heckled Nthose little seventh graders. 1949 came and the title of nfreshmenu was bestowed upon us. Nedra Lanham, Tom White, Rosemary Kondas, Tom Hassett and David Heino were the newcomers. Now we were in high schoolf Marilyn Louys, Roberta Hall, and Fred Walsh came from near and far to become part of the class of '53. We had really narrivedfn Besides being allowed to sit in the balcony during as- sembly, we also had our first class play and cheered on our classmates who were playing for the first time in high school sports. Before we knew it, we, the juniors, were in rehearsal for our class play nRoom For One Moren with Marilyn Louys playing the lead, Jerry Rossum Joined the class and we were continually busy with such things as the Gar- nival and the Junior-Senior Prom. An especially ncherlshedn experience was the annual Pilot Club initiation. Seniorsf The great day has come, Now, as we leave these hallowed halls, we will brush a tear from the corner of our eyes as we recall mem- ories both happy and sad. May the years to come be as pleasant as those we have passed and may the friends made here never be forgotten, Gloria Hershberg 'WAY BACK IN 1940 lst rowileft to rlghtbz Shirley Norris, Ward Johnson, Jerry Randolph, Carol Lackson, Ruth McDonald, Florence Duff, William Buonomo, 2nd row: Miss Harriet Tilton, Carl Lackson, Johnny weigren, Clyde Aickin, Ronald Cain, John Riddell, Jim Digney, Gerald Richardson, Rosemary Kondas. 3rd row: Katrine Aho, Ronnie Perkins, David Depue, Carole Rennick. F, Z We, the Class of 1954, do this day take pen and ink in hand and proph- esy what will become of our schoolmates, the Glass of 1953, within the en- suing ten years. In the year 1963 we expect to see the following: Clyde Aickln is now a famous women's hair stylist. He specializes in redheads. Gloria Hershberg and Paul Carlo are now great inventors, Their most recent invention is a baby crib that will automatically feed, rock and burp- little babies, An original book has just been published entitled MeL Myself and LL the Congueror. It was written, edited and published by the one and only Duke Gregory. Martha Ellen Johnson, now an accomplished nightclub singer, is appear- ing nightly in the Harbor Hotel, Hthe hotel with a background.n Bonnie Lesperance has recently graduated from the Ohio State School of Dentistry. She has taken on a very useful assistant, Harry uChlorophyllH Green. Besides being a dentist, Bonnie has three toothy children, NChloro- phylln Green is granted penmission to care for Wisdom, Eye and Molar during Bonn1e's office hours. Rosemary Kondas has finally invented a way to make cows contented in 3 easy lessons. Tom Hassett joined the Navy, but it was soon found out that his talents lay elsewhere, He was transfered to the waves and now is doing a fine Job as Inspection Officer. David Depue, a distinguished scientist, is now gaining great fame in Africa as the inventor of a sleeping pill that ls guaranteed to put asleep everything but plants. A prominent citizen of the U,S. is Miss Nedra Lanham. When last heard from, Nedra was campaigning enthusiastically for Gerald Rossum, who is the presidential candidate on the Prohlbitionlst ticket, If and when Jerry wins, we shall no longer have intoxicating beverages pouring from our public coke machines, The new Mrs. America of 1963 is our own Louise Michelson, A very stri- king photo of her appeared in nL1feH which pictured Lulu perched on a wash- ing machine singing HThe Wash Wash Blues,N Carole Rennick may be found in a hot spot downtown playing trumpet for Perry Johnson's trio which also features Fred Walsh on the wash tubs. This trio travels under the professional name of the Hook, Line and Sinker Trio. Ward Johnson is now known as the great Johnsonowski and is directing his own symphony orchestra in Carnegie Hall. Just think, all of this dates back to the days when Ward was captain of our own Harbor Band! Now on display every Wednesday night on TV are the talents of Marilyn Sorice, Marilyn is a professional tumbler and believe me, she really can tumble. Tom White has won his fame as a sports writer. His yearly articles appear in the Jefferson Gazette under the heading Uwe Know It All, So Shut P. Dick Farrar, now a teacher at Harbor, has taken the place of dear Mr. Edmunds and is following close in his footsteps. Another member of the fac- ulty, Dick Sievinen, is teaching drivers' training, Dick likes his Job, but is having a rough time with these new jet propelled cars. One of our most unusual cases is that of Charles Yocum. uChuckn is currently dancing the lead in the ballet nThe Dying Swann at the Harbor Palace. David Helno has made a name for himself as a television actor. Dave is featured as the NBad Mann on the local station, O,I,C,U, Dick Eskelin is still waiting for his lady fair. Five years ago she Joined the wacs and Dick promised to walt for her, He's still waiting. Lola Backlund has won nationwide renown as a soapbox derby racer. And to think that she builds all her racers with her own two hands. Carol Lackson is teaching dancing to children under three years of age. She is doing a fine job. CClass Prophecy con'tD The Dean at Gannon College for boys in Eire is Roberta Hall. She also teaches a few courses not listed in the curriculum. Have you ever heard the advertisement for Rival Dog Food? Norma Krans makes good use of her talents by supplying the Hwoof, woofn for the commer- cial. Henman Ritonen has developed a fine style and has become a great singen If you can remember the Johnny Ray we had back in 1953, you have a good idea of what Henman sounds like, A new sextet is to replace Martha Ellen at the Harbor Hotel next week, It consists of Lois Matha, Loretta Eyajan, Linda Doxsie, Kathleen Butler, Pamela Bush, and Jane Braski, These girls form the only sextet in the world that when singing sounds like an orchestra, choir and trombone all at one time. Carl Lackson is playing short stop for the Cleveland Indians. You probably haven't heard much about him, but give him time, Another author in our midst is Ronald Jarvela. Ronnie recently wrote a book based on how to keep young wives happy and contented. Marilyn Louys is head football coach at Ashtabula High, We don't con- sider Marilyn a traitor because during the four years that Marilyn has been coaching, Harbor has beaten Bula by horrible scores, Head tester in the local pickle factory is Shirley Norris, Shirley is making rapid advancements for her fine work in counting warts, She always lives up to the factory motto, HNever less than 16 warts to a p1ckle,H I t 1 the e d of her Betsy Lehtinen is still trying to tenth year as a Senior. Believe it or More power to you, Betsyf So ends our prophecy and with our future seniors of Harbor High, bid you graduate af er near ng n not, she only needs 67 more points, blessings and good wishes, we, the adieu, The Class of 1954 CMill1e Savericel we, the graduating Seniors of 1953, Harbor High School, city of Ashta- bula, county of Ashtabula, state of Ohio, United States of America, being in sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this our last will and testament. Zami During the past year the Concert and Marching Band of Harbor High School has striven toward one main goal---the three day tour to Erie, Buffalo, Nia- gara Falls, Hamilton, and Toronto, Ontario. The talents of the 75 band mem- bers have been put to very good use as is evident by their many appearances, such as: the North End Street Fair, their great variety of well presented halftime shows on the football field, a hard worked for and satisfying Winter Concert, a comedy skit nHey Pedron presented as one of the acts in the Vari- ety Show, a twin band festival with the Jefferson Bandiboth bands are under the direction of Mr. Frederick walkerl, a concert for the N.E.O,T.A. at Edge- wood Auditorium. and finally climaxed by the band tour April 23, 24, and 25. HMus1c--Musicianship--Sincere Expression--Art Form--These Are Our Goalsn is the motto of the Harbor Band and we think that they have more than lived up to it in the 1952-53 school year. p lst rowlleft to rightls Linda Backlund, Kathryn Hakala, Lola Backlund, Carol Lackson, Elizabeth Kotila, Elaine Lehtinen, Judy Laird, Karen Knudsen, Deborah McMorr1s, Carol Turner, Lynnore Karhu, Carl Olson. 2nd row: Marion Lundi, Loretta Eyajan, David Kulvlnen, Mary Fors, George Haapala, Bill Stegall, Elona Ruohonen, David Kotila, Kathleen Butler, Jane Braski, Wilma Wagner, Donna Davidson, Philip Maenpa, Darla Luce, Barbara Jackson, Mary Lois Lindenmayer. 3rd row: Linda Johnson, Carole Acierno, Eleanor Fuller, John Hyppa, Raymond Beckman, Bill Hill, Bill March, William Tiito, Alfred Talvola, David Belknap, Karen Haapala, Roger Hyppa, Robert McNutt, Sarah Hakala, Keith Lair, Ernest Lindenmayer, Gerald Nor- gren, Kathryn Laird, David Norris. 4th row: Lois Matha, Eleanor Lehtinen, Ralph Kuivinen, Jean Fisher, Marvis Esko, Charles Altonen, Richard Masaro, Henry Rossi, Ward Johnson, Jane Alford, Donald Tiito, John Urban, Peter Bell, Bruce Lehtinen, John Kanne, 5th row: Celeste Rinto, Janet Loveridge, Susan Hakala, Albert Lundstrom, Carl Lackson, B111 Hamilton, Jerry Miller, David Depue, Joan Jeffers, Jeannine DeNoble, Mary Elizabeth Stevens, Mariel Herlevi, Mr. Frederick Walker, director.
