As we graduate from Haralson County High School, we will carry with us the memories of a very special person—Mr. Bill Simmons. Since HCH was founded nine years ago, Mr. Simmons has been a guiding force in the school. It would be hard to forget his dry wit or his firm, yet understanding guidance. He has shown through his dedicated work as guidance counselor that he really cares about people. He has truly earned the respect and admiration of every student and facility member. Therefore, it is with great pride and extreme pleasure that the annual staff dedicates the 1979 REBEL annual to a friend: Mr. Bill Simmons. Within the covers of this publication are recorded 'memories' which will be very pleasant to review in the years to come. It has been a very rewarding experience to be associated with you young men and women as you have demonstrated your abilities through these efforts. This REBEL will serve as one of your successful accomplishments. As you continue to learn and explore, I challenge you to further your formal education or become well-trained in a chosen trade or profession. Please be willing to uphold that which is honest and work to be a contributing member of a very happy and productive society. Always remember us. Our prayers and best wishes go with you. As you become Alumni, please be active in supporting your current underclassmen as they strive to reach their goals and objectives. Always help to perpetuate the HCHS pride, spirit and enthusiasm. Sincerely yours. Bob Watson, Superintendent Mr. Hogan Jones, Principal Sometimes it’s hard to realize how difficult a task looking after and pleasing 800 students and 40 teachers can be. Sometimes we forget to say “Thank you.” Mr. Hogan Jones is the kind of person and leader who is always willing to take time to listen and to try to help anyone with a problem. We do appreciate his efforts on behalf of all of us, and we do extend to him a well-deserved, if long overdue “Thank you!” Mr. Frank Hutcheson He is not only an administrator at HCH, but he is also a member of our teaching staff. He has been at HCH for five years, and has garnered the respect of teachers and students alike. We would like to extend our appreciation to our asst, principal, Mr. Frank Hutcheson. She was born in Cedartown, Ga., and is married to Mr. Charles Calhoun, Jr. Her hobbies are reading and eating sweet foods. Since she is the cheerleader sponsor, she devotes much of her time toward promoting the school spirit. Math is used constantly-every day of our lives. (Skip two spaces after each period.) We drive down the road (speed limit: 55) and cook our food (heat at 350° for 20 min.), but we never realize how often we use numbers and math. We can only COUNT our lucky stars that we have got these teachers to help us FIGURE out the fun of numbers. B. Calhoun Mr. Bill Calhoun is the youngest of the Calhoun clan at HCH. Despite the occasional heartbreaking ordeal of breaking a fin- gernail, or having to type a ten-page term paper over, the Bus. Ed. teachers at HCH make the typically boring job of learning how to type an un-TYPE-ical experience! B. Abney Mr. Benny Abney is the coordin- ator of Vocational Education (CVAE) at HCH. He was born in Cleburne Co., Alabama. He has attended Jacksonville State and West Georgia College. He is married and enjoys coin collect- ing, hunting, and fishing. This is her sixth year teaching at HCH. Her favorite colors are blue and green. If not a teacher, Ms. Poseywould have been a dental hygienist. The Vocational Department is a great asset to HCH. UGLY - Chris Brannam Scott Robinson HCH Rebels Battle Pepperell Dragons The Haralson County Rebels Weren’t exactly knights in shining armor, but they still had to battle the dragon, as ’twas long ago. Although the score was not in our favor when the buzzer sounded, the Rebels had stood their ground against a tough Pepperell team. Rebels Raise A “Ruckus” At Homecoming! Immediately following the ballgame, the Rebels changed from cleats to “boogie shoes.” Even though we were not victorious, the Rebel spirit was not dampened in the least. All the way from Atlanta, the Homecoming band, Ruckus, came and shook the halls of HCH with their music. The dance was to wind up the Homecoming festivities of 1978—a Homecoming HCH will never forget! “Now, we’re not ones to go ’round spreadin’ rumors . . A Touch Of Nostalgia At HCH I’m a lover, not a fighter” “If you’ve got it, flaunt it” “Eat your heart out, Fonzie” “The Laverne Shirley of HCH” No, you aren’t seeing things, and yes, this is the 1979 Rebel Yearbook. What you see on this page is a pictorial feature of one of the most popular student events of the year—’50’s Day. The HCHS Student Council sponsors the annual event with bubble-gum blowing contests, prizes for the best dressed, and fifties’ music in the lunchroom. Care to jitterbug? Steve Cauthen won racing’s triple crown (left) at age seventeen, appeared on the cover of TIME magazine, and became an adolescent hero. Woody Hayes ended his long football coaching career with one quick blow. Alabama was the number one college football team. The Falcons made it to the playoffs. The New York Yankees won the World Series, and Willie Mays was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Reggie Jackson became a millionaire baseball player and Sparky Anderson was fired from the Reds. And Muhammed Ali regained his heavyweight title from Leon Spinks. Norman Rockwell, illustrator of Americana, died in December. The big news on the home front was the Atlanta Falcons. This year the Falcons were able to play well enough to make it to the playoffs. Superbowl fever was hot, and hopes were high as the Falcons led in the first half of an exciting game against the Dallas Cowboys, in the decisive battle for the Superbowl. But despite the effort, the Falcons lost to the Cowboys 27-20. In a way, the Falcon fans got sweet revenge when the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Pittsburjgh Steelers in the Superbowl. Mickey Turned Fifty. Happy Birthday! The Year In Review John Belushi (above) had a surprise hit in one of the year’s top movies: National Lampoon’s “Animal House.” The picture has grossed over ninety-two million dollars so far, and it shows no signs of stopping. Other movies which lined them up at the box office were: “Midnight Express,” “Heaven Can Wait,” “Magic.” and, of course, “Superman.” The big success story of 1978 was John Travolta. From his spectacular opening walk in “Saturday Night Fever” to his boogie with Olivia Newton-John in “Grease,” John has made millions of dollars for himself and the entertainment industry. “Grease” was the number one movie of 1978, followed by “Saturday Night Fever” at number two; and the soundtracks from both pictures have a combined sales total of over fifty million copies world wide. If all this were not enough, he was also nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in “Saturday Night Fever.” and “Grease” changed Olivia Newton-John’s image: from country fashion to black tights. Comedian Steve Martin became the number one comic in the U.S. He ap- peared on the cover of NEWSWEEK, recorded a platinum album which won a Grammy, and appeared in Las Vegas for $12,000 — per day. Golda Meir, the beloved “mother of Israel,” died. Turkey Of The Year Award: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Margaret Mead died at her home in New York. The world was in shock as two popes died in the same year, and were followed by the first IN MEMORIAM Hubert H. Humphrey Pope Paul VI Pope John Paul I Edgar Bergen Totie Fields Bob Crane Nelson Rockefeller A reborn Jimmy Carter gave away the Panama Canal, stopped production of the neutron bomb, introduced a new energy bill, and brought together Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat at Camp David to begin a new era of peace in the Middle East. _________________ non-Italian pope in over 400 years.
