The 1973 Yearbook Staff proudly presents THE REBEL Volume III Cheryl Ellis-Editor in Chief Rebecca Sullivan-Advisor Pam Smith-Managing Editor Robert King-Financial Advisor Rebecca Alien-Copy Editor James Watts-Art Advisor Haralson County High School; Tallapoosa, Georgia The 1973 REBEL Staff would like to express our ap- preciation to a man who has shown us what a friend really is. He is always there when we need him and always willing to talk to us. In this world, where friendship is so often measured by social status, this man has shown us that friendship breaks all social boundaries. The REBEL Staff says thanks, Mr. Simmons, for being you. 2 3 In every school, one factor stands out as universal, yet unique-the spirit of the student body, and its activities. . . . Football, cheerleading, band, basketball; pep rallies, concerts, assemblies and initiations; the excitement of a foot- ball game-the glory in victory, the subdue, but ever present pride in defeat, the sense of oneness in the crowd that binds it together into a powerful support; everything, every action that goes into making students the student body, and making a school their school . . . We, the 1973 REBEL staff, have tried to capture this in- tangible feeling, to keep it, along with the memories, for the years to come. a 5 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 17 ESTABLISHMENT Superintendent ’s Board of Education: Sitting 1-r Johnny Davenport, Wilson Freeman, V.O. Sanders, Superintendent 1973-1976 Hogan Jones Coordinator of Federal Programs, and Director of Transportation To Students of H.C.H.S. Another year is being recorded for the history of H.C.H.S. and I hope that each of you have satisfaction in know- ing that you have been a part in making this its best year. 1 am glad to have been involved with you in working toward our aims and goals. It is only through participation that we can have a spirit of togetherness and meet our needs. There is one knowledge which it is every man's duty and interest to acquire, namely, self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is that acquaintance with ourselves which shows us what we are, and what we ought to be, in order to have a happy, worthwhile present that is necessary for a satisfying, wholesome future. Self-knowledge is best learned, not by contemplation, but by action. I trust that the experience that you have had at H.C.H.S. are results of careful planning between you, the dis- ciplines available at H.C.H.S. and the community. And that through the knowledge that you have acquired, you will be prepared to be successful in your future endeavors. To this I wish to offer my best wishes to you for much success and happiness in life. Sincerely, 20 George W. Kinzy Mr. Paul Dunn. Assistant Principal Mrs. Samuel T. Skaggs. Therefore, on every morrow, arc we wreathing A flowery band to bind us to the earth, Spite of despondence, of the inhuman death Of noble natures, of the gloomy days. Of all the unhealthy and o er-darkcned ways Made for our searching: yes, in spite of all. Some shape of beauty moves away the pall From our dark spirits. Such the sun, the moon. Pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink. Nor do we merely feel these essences For one short hour; no, even as the trees That whisper round a temple become soon Dear as the temple’s self, so does the moon. S. Rambo Kevin Owens I chose Mrs. Rambo as my STAR Teacher because she is, in my opinion, about as close as you can get to being an ideal teacher. She has all the qualities that students look for in a teacher to identify with. In my fifth grade class she was always patient, understanding, and strict, in her own way. It was not the kind of strictness that people use just for a show of power, but the kind that gets things done and doesn’t turn you against her in doing it. You could always take your problems to her if you needed to and she would understand and try to work with you to solve them. Her room always had an atmosphere of learning, and problems of discipline seldom arose, not because of the fear of punishment, but because she’s just the kind of a person who makes her students want to learn. She spent many years in the teaching profession, and during the whole time she didn’t close her mind to increasing her own knowledge. She knew how a young person’s mind works and used that knowledge to get the students to want to learn and progress. She was not the kind of teacher that is never wrong and can't be talked to on a one-to-one basis, but she did keep the necessary line drawn between student and teacher. Overall she’s just the kind of a person that makes a lasting impression on her students and sets a good example for them to follow. 54 --Kevin Owens Julie Craven David Laminack 55 56 Judy Robinson Freddie Parham 58 Kathy Eaves Richard Gentry B E S T P E R S 0 N A L 1 T Y 59 Christy Thornton Keith Miller 60 La Nay Munroe Bob Smith 61 Billie Banks Curtis Smith 63 64 FEATURES 65 crowns her successor.
