HARALSON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Tallapoosa, Georgia presents JOHNNY REB-1971 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction p. 1-17. Athleticsp. 18-61. Activities p. 62-93. Administration and Faculty p. 94-109. Classes p. 110-161. Senior Directory p. 160-165. Advertisements p. 164-192. A NEW BEGINNING.. . This school was once a pile of dirt, but this is what it has be- come. . .A place where new acquaintances have become old friends. . A place of phys- ical as well as mental dedica- tion. . A place to remember because this is where it all began. . . 2 •.. HARALSON COUNTY HIGH SCHO OL 3 DEDICATION There were many who had doubts as to whether or not Haralson County High School would exist this year. Yet, by the hard work of con- struction men. the Administration, the Faculty, and citizens of Haralson County. 1970-1971 became our first year as a consolidated school. What could make a beautiful building more beautiful? That which is found within---the student body. These are the people who repre- sent almost everything for which our school stands. In work, in play, and in sincerity our student body remains as one. It is with great pride that we, the 1971 Annual Staff, dedicate our first yearbook. THE JOHNNY REB, to the student body of H. C. H. a 5 A RENE WED SPIRIT. Spirit. . .an exciting word. . the thrill of the first ball- game. . .winning. . .losing. . tension mounting. . .sweaty football players. . .anxious crowds. . .hamburgers. . . popcorn. . confetti. . .bal- loons. . .Homecoming. . . band playing “Dixie”. . . “We can win, we will win, we're gonna win”.. .THAT’S REBEL SPIRIT! 6 TIME FOR EMOTIONS. .. Emotions come easily. . . excitement, thrills, happiness, and even sadness. . . To mature into a well-rounded individual, everyone must experience these emotions. In new surroundings, we at H.C.H., undergo each day in our activities the old emotions. 8 NEW FRIENDSHIPS The students of H.C.H came together from three small schools, Buchanan, Tallapoosa and West Haralson ... 1+D 1' 1 ... Results? a mingling ... old friends ... new friends ... Hi! How about a date? ... Did you hear about? ... Guess who I got for biology? ... Can’t wait till Homecoming Dance ... Are you going to wear a midi? ... That new boy with a beard is cute!... 10 NEW PROBLEMS Dang this combination lock! ... I’m in the wrong class room!... Is this E period? ... $5.00 Student Fee? ... This inflation's killing me! ... Braving mud and rain to come to school ... Stuck in the mud of the New parking lot ... One sided desks ... Lunch--mass confusion ... Nice stage: no curtains ... “To be or not to be’’: A gym and football stadium ... 12 A TIME TO LEARN. .. Even though we all enjoy the fun times at H.C.H ... we realize we are here for one main purpose ... TO LEARN ... learning involves homework ... a seemingly enemy to all students ... Study time and hard work spent by students and teachers alike ... learning is the light which shines on the future. 14 15 OLD, NEW- GOOD OR BAD.. . WE'RE REBELS TO THE END! APPRECIA TION... We, the 1970-71 Annual Staff, would like to express our sincerest appreciation to Miss Dora Walls and Mr. Robert King, our annual advisors, without whom ‘JOHNNY REB could not have been possible. They could not have been more generous with their time, efforts, understanding, and patience. To you both each annual staff member says thank you for just being you! 17 FOOTBALL. Football. . .just the simple sound of the word means thrills, chills, and the feeling of excitement. . .It’s a no man’s land for those who aren’t willing to stick it out-- win or lose. . .It’s not a game to be played by one man . .It takes the WHOLE team. . . a terrific coaching staff. . .spirited cheer- leaders. . .and the support of the student body and fans. . .It takes this and more to have a winning team. . .But no matter how good things seem to go. . .You can’t win ’em all. . Yet being a Rebel doesn’t mean being superhuman. . .And 6 out of 10 just isn’t that bad. . .Thank you Rebels for a team we’re all proud of! Another year of Haralson County Football has drawn to a close and the 1970 edition of Haralson County Rebels is now history. It is with great pride that I can state that this team has done more with what they had against greater odds than any other team in Rebel history. They faced a tougher schedule with less experience and through it all made a great showing. One that not only maintained the respect and pride of prior Rebel teams, but at the same time served notice that better things were yet to come. So to every student, player, band member, cheerleader, and faculty member that make up the Haralson County Rebels, I want to ex- tend my sincere appreciation for your support and cooperation throughout the season. What- ever success we have enjoyed is due to the combined efforts of everyone pulling together. I would like to also state that it is an honor and a privilege to serve as your head coach and that my assistants and I will continue to do everything in our power to put the name of the Rebels on top where it so rightly be- longs. I can think of no better words to de- scribe my true feelings than to quote a slogan adopted by our cheerleaders--“If I have but one life to live, let me live it as a Haralson County Rebel!” 21 j eaus tteoeisr« o 16-12 Win Over Trion BY MIKE NIXON Friday night the Haralson County Rebels traveled to a., to play the Tnon Bulldogs, where both teams made 70 debut. It seems like it comes around faster and faster as each year rolls by. Everyone looks forward to all of the games to be played but before anyone can think about the games, we have to start with practice. There are only fifteen girls who will be eligible to receive a suit, so the season starts off with about thirty or more girls competing for these limited number of uniforms. After a number of weeks of really hard work and sincere dedication the girls are slowly cut down to the ‘fifteen’. These girls have been chosen to represent the Haralson County High School in the field of varsity basketball. That’s a pretty big job. The day the suits are given out is really some- thing else. When the coach hands you that Rebel uniform it seems to light a tiny spark inside you, which burns all through the season. Each member of the team strives so that this spark will carry them through the very last game at the State Tournaments in Macon. Regular practice has begun and this is when all of the players and coach have to give 110% of everything they have. Each game is taken one at a time and the mis- takes are to be as few as possible. Each indi- vidual strives to build on the experience of her mistakes. We all make mistakes but we work together to turn these mistakes into Victories. 46 Coach Jane Williamson Elaine Witcher Donna Caswell Managers Jeanna Durr Junior 49 50 Becky Madden Paulette Allen 51 52 Bertha Williamson 53 Billie Banks BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM 54 FOUL SHOT With two 60’s stuck on the scoreboard And two seconds hanging on the clock. The solemn boy in the center of eyes, Squeezed by silence, Seeks out the line with his feet, Soothes his hands along his uniform, Gently drums the ball against the floor, Then measures the waiting net, Raises the ball on his right hand, Balances it with his left, Calms it with fingertips, Breathes, Crouches, Waits, And then through a stretching of stillness, Nudges it upward. The ball slides up and out, Lands, Leans, Wobbles, Wavers, Hesitates, Exasperates, Plays it coy, until every face begs with un- sounding screams — And then And then, And then, Right before ROAR-UP, Dives down and through. These people say there is none. This group is a new experience for most of us and in years to come we hope that this group will become the most outstanding of its type in the state of Georgia. 69 CHORUS Sing, Sang, Sung! Theory Classes! Mr. Martin? All these go to make up what is known as chorus at H.C.H. By combining all these things with a little practice and hard work, these members are able to blend their voices and bring through the real “sound of music.” 70 THE BETA CLUB The 1971 Beta Club got off to a roaring start as they began this school year as guides for the beautiful new building. They continued this trend throughout the year with their various activities such as the con- vention, cake sales, basketball games, and just plain fun. The out- going Betas would like to issue a challenge to each of the upcoming Betas to carry on the “spirit of ’71.” 71 THE 4-H CLUB Senior Club EXPLORERS CLUB This coed club is based on science in association with the Boys Scouts of America. Some of its activities involve field trips and camping expeditions. 73 F.H.A Sewing, cooking, family life, crafts, home projects, and tests. Yes, all these things make up The Future Homemakers of America. These girls strive in every field to prepare themselves for wholesome living in their future homes. 74 Although the modern world has turned to the age of manufacturing, the agricultural way of living is still rated among the most important a young person may enter into today. The cycle from producer to con- sumer will never stop and for this reason we will always need our Future Farmers of America. 75 THE PAPER STAFF 76 Junior Staff ATHLETIC CLUB This group is composed of those who have lettered in sports this year. I want to see each of you become good citizens who contribute to the well being of his neighbor. I want you to be able to think and reach intelli- gent conclusions in order that you may know how to become a good follower as well as a good leader. May you believe that learning and growth know no age limit. By practicing this you will serve your generation well and leave a rich heritage for posterity. I am pleased that I can say that you have shown to your friends, parents and teachers that you have the intelligence, character, and ability to accomplish the tasks required of all those who will make this changing world a better place in which to live. The joy of living your respective lives may be interrupted in the future by occasional dis- appointments and reversals, but these experi- ences need not lead you to chant a perpetual calamity. May you be strengthened by them. With an unfaltering trust in God’s great wis- dom, may you always have the courage to do and to dare, to think and to plan, to persevere and fulfill.
