The library, the teachers, the office, and the students-these are the focal points. Progress in the dissemina- tion of fundamental ideas is basic. Be- neath all the activities and excitement these things make HarlBrack an excep- tional high school. More and more the academic aspect of the high school is being stressed. A business English course is available for those persons who think their future in- cludes clerical or secretarial work. Har-Brack kept pace by offering all that was possible in the way of facilities and efficient instruction. The continued emphasis upon instruction of science in the elementary grades and the availability of chemistry courses for non-college high school students points up the Science Department's awareness of the need for everyone to obtain some scientific knowledge in preparation for life in this space age. With vigor and interest, the capable staff of the Science Department has tackled the two-fold iob of emphasizing the need for intensive scientific preparation and, also, the bringing of this newly acquired knowledge into harmonious relationship with the other fields of education that are so vital to the building of a strong future. N i bg v Future Craftsmen M The Industrial Arts Department includes Metal Shop, Wood Shop, Mechanical Drawing, and Graphic Arts. It serves to broaden areas offered in iunior high school and to acquaint the student with new ones. These courses are not designed to develop tradesmen, rather they are to give the student an opportunity to experiment with certain materials, products, and processes of industry. They also provide the student with the opportunity to pursue areas of individual interest or ability. It is hoped that the Industrial Arts program will provide a founda- tion upon which a student can enter a trade, advanced study, or everyday life with a broader knowledge of the concepts of industry, the principles of consumer buying, and the wide range of interesting and useful hobbies with which to occupy his leisure time. By September 1959 our pursuit of twelve years was reached- we assembled as Seniors. A most prosperous money raising proiect was the selling of Christmas wrappings. Along with the presentation of the Senior Class play The Little Dog Laughed under the direction of Mrs. Salvatore we had delight in attending a Senior Dinner Dance and the gratification of acquiring Har-Bracks first foreign exchange student Jean Jacques Fivaz. To terminate the year the Senior Class participated in the annual Move-up Day program. The pursuit of excellence displayed by students through par- ticipation in service groups is mirrored in their every at- tempt to make this year a better year, this club one of the most successful, and the service to school and community of an everlasting nature. Proiects are planned: dreams are put into reality, and people work diligently. Sometimes the proiects succeed, 'sometimes they fail. The student governing body of Har-Brack is composed of an Execu- tive Board and elected representatives from each class. Mr. Gill serves as ad- visor to the group. The Council attempts to represent the student body in any phase of school life, direct school activities, and promote student-faculty relationships. The members of Council, through their continued efforts to attain and maintain their aims, experience the workings of democracy in a practical situation. Directed by Mr. Shankovich, the Mixed Chorus spends long, tedious hours of vvorlc and practice for its many per- formances that serve to in- spire audiences. The Mixed Chorus is a select vocal group of the school. Numbering eighty, the group continually repre- sents the school tothe com- munity as it performs for such groups as the Rotary, Lions, P.T.A., c h u rc h groups, and other organia zations. The Chorus again displayed their ability to thrill both students and faculty with their perform- ances at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Long a leader in the development of the Upper Allegheny Valley Chorus Festival, the Mixed Chorus again joined with area schools to present a most unforgettable evening of music. The year 1959-1960 will go down in the history of the Har-Brack High School Band as one of its more successful terms. The highlight of the season was the return of Mr. Raphael Mendez as guest soloist at the an- nual Har-Brack Band concert held in the spring. Ably super- vised by Mrs. Salvatore, the Tigerettes utilized imaginative formations that indicated that many hours of practice had preceded their ap- pearance onto the field. Capably led by Josephine Kisiel, the Tig- erettes consistently delighted audiences both at home and away with their routines. The ma- iorettes also appeared with the band at Forbes Field and on WTAE television in addition to representing the school in several community parades during the past year. The Tigers drew first blood as a result of a 65- yard drive, on a four-yard scant by iunior halfback McKinley Combs. The touchdown was set u by fullback Jim Mazza, who ripped off runs of Siand 16 yards, respectively. The extra point attempt by Denny Gaydos was blocked by. a Vandy lineman. That play proved to be very costly to the Tigers, for Vandergrift received the ensuing kickoff and marched 70 yards for the game tying score. The all important extra point was good. Neither team could score again and the deiected Tigers were handed a heart-breaking set back. Westinghouse bounced back and in two plays tied the score. The conversion was successful. McKinley Combs climaxed a 55-yard drive by crashing over from the two to put the Tigers in the lead. Westinghouse tallied two quick scores to lead 20-l2 at the end of the first quarter. Following an- other Westinghouse score, Gaydos scored for Har- Brack to make the score 26-T8 at the half. l-lareBrack stiffened its defense in the second half and held the Bulldogs to one score while the Tigers tallied three times. J JAMES MAZZA Fullback Tornadoes Trounoe H-B in Close Contest The Big Green, attempting to gain its second triumph of the season, traveled to Butler, only to be shut out by a strong Golden Tornado defensive unit by the score of 12-O. The offense of the Tigers failed to click throughout the entire game, and as a result, they gained only 63 yards. Brilliant punting and a strong defense kept the Tigers tamed, mostly deep in their territory, time and time again. The closest the Tigers came to scoring occurred on the first play from scrimmage as quarterback Denny Gaydos lofted a long aerial which just slipped off the out-stretched fingertips of end Doug McCurdy. The deepest penetration of the Tigers came in the first quarter when McKinley Combs raced to the Butler 40, only to lose the ball on a fumble. Both Butler scores came as a result of short line bucks by their fullback. T5Clile Tigers Decisifvely Shatter The Big Green of Har-Brack visited McKeesport and proved to be an unwelcome guest as they de- feated the Tubers 21-14. It took the Tigers but two minutes after the opening kick-off to sustain a 70-yard drive for their first score. Brilliant running by junior fullback Jay Malobicky and halfback McKinley Combs set up the score. Malobicky got the honors by breaking over from the one-yard line. Denny Gaydos added the P.A.T. After Malobicky recovered a McKeesport tum- ble, Gaydos hit Dennis Walker with a pass in the end zone for the second score in five minutes for the Tigers. It was the second con secutive victory for Har-Brack and their third of the season as against the same number of defeats Central's only score came on a 60 yard drive with the second half kickoff. ' t 1 T 4 I' DENNIS NYLAND Haltback Gridclers Shackle Over-River Rivals Vicious tackling, blocking, and hard running by the Har-Brack High School Tigers resulted in a 21-13 victory over cross-river rival, Ken Hi. With less than two minutes gone in the game, the Tiger's Bob Masarik fumbled and Ken-Hi recovered on the Har-Brack 34. Eight plays later Ken Hi grabbed the lead on a Ballard touchdown. On the second play of the second period, Denny Gaydos hit Jim Mazza with a I6-yard pass to climax a 78-yard drive. Gaydos booted the extra point to knot the score at half time. The Tigers tallied twice again on a 2-yard plunge by Gaydos and a 9-yard dash by Mazza. For the second year in succession, the Tigers were too much for Ken Hi. AA champs, exploded for 20 points in the second half to defeat the Har-Brack Tigers before a huge crowd in Johns- town. ln the first half it appeared that the Tigers were to give the Trojans a run for their money. However, at the start of the second half, the Tigers suddenly becanne lifeless and virtually handed the game to their opponents. Foster displays brilliant defensive work by hauling down a goal-hungry ballcarrier. Powerful Johnstown Following two Johnstown scores, Har-Brack carne to life in the second quarter to produce a sustained drive that was climaxed on a Jerry Malecki pass to Dennis Walker from eight yards out. After giving up another Trojan T.D., Har-Brack's Doug McCurdy made a sensational one-hand snare of a Denny Gaydos aerial and out raced Johnstown de- fenders to the end zone of a 56-yard play. Spring comes to Har-Brack bringing not only mud and more rnud, but also all the sports that come with the spring season. ' Suddenly there is renewed activity on the cinder track, baseball practices last until there is no longer enough light to see the spheroid, and golf caps come out of winter storage This is the panorama of spring sports. 1 Baseball 9 Finishes Second in Section 9 Headed by Coach Nick Staresinic, Har-Brack's diamond men completed another successful season by finishing second in W.P.I.A.L. Section 9 with an over-all season record of ten wins and three losses. Led by the consistent hitting of seniors Mike Matsik, Leroy Eckenrod, and Bob Alcantara, the Tigers opened the season with a very decisive li-3 exhibition victory over Ford City. Also in exhibition, the Big Green proceeded to defeat Kittaning and Shaler respectively before opening section play. League action opened with W.P.l.A.l.. champions, Freeport. The defending champions proved no bar- rier for the high flying Tigers as they outfought them by the score of 3-1 behind the stalwart pitching of junior right-hander Stan Rafalko. Rafalko allowed the Yellowiackets a total of four hits in the decisive victory. The Tigers continued on their winning ways by whipping Springdale I-O in a league contest and Hurst 3-2 in exhibition before colliding with rival Ken Hi. It took the Raiders two extra innings, but they finally emerged victorious by scoring two runs in the ninth inning to end Har-Brack's five-game winning streak. After absorbing their first defeat of the season, the Tigers bounced back strong to defeat Arnold ll-6 in a section fracas. Following a l-O upset by Springdale, the Tigers revived their early season winning ways by defeating Kiski Prep, New Kensington, and Arnold respectively. As a season finale, the Big Green played host to Freeport to decide the section title. Har-Brack fought valiantly, but the defending champions proved to be too strong and virtually walked off the field with a 2-1 victory and another Section 9 championship. As a result of the loss, Har-Brack, for the second year in a row, had to accept being second best in Section 9. By finishing the season with a two and one record in duel competition and by also placing second in a triangular meet, the Tigers proved a worthy opponent to the opposition. Har-Brack opened the season by trouncing Ford City 90-13 on the loser's track. Junior Doug McCurdy grabbed high scoring honors for the Tigers by winning the low hurdles and tying teammate McKinley Combs for the 100- yard dash. The Big Green continued its winning ways by thump- ing Elders Ridge 672!3-36Va. Doug McCurdy again led the Tigers by scoring T5 points as a result of winning the 100-yard dash, the 220, and the low hurdles competi- tion. Shaler handed the Tigers their first setback of the campaign by a narrow 56-53 score. The Tigers closed the season by competing in an in- vitational triangular meet in Brentwood. Har-Brack, with a score of 49, finished second behind Brentwood's 89, but managed to outscore Bethel's 28.
