' AMERICAN HISTORY COMPETITION On November IZ, the Sun-Telegraph held its Sixth Annual American History Awards Competition with 125 ace students representing 87 city, county, and parochial schools, taking part. The purpose of this test was to emphasize the importance of history and to arouse interest in this important social science, Each contestant was rated on an essay and objective examination designed to reveal the breadth and depth of the person's historical knowledge. Among the participants were two Har-Braclc stu- dents, Nellie Shearer and Audrey Dodds, who spent several weeks of intense preparation for the competi- tion, Har-Braclc was fortunate in receiving one of the honorable mention awards in the form of a S25 United States Saving Bond to Nellie Shearer. Through the efforts of the two participants, the schoolis stan- dards were raised in the field of scholastic achieve- Iflent. Hall Editors and Advisers, l. to r.-Conwell, Ekas, Mr. Burney, Heck, Mrs. E. Briggs. Heidenreich. The Editorial Staff of the Tiger, consisting of three Seniors and one Junior worked to- gether with a common objective of publishing a memorable yearbook and getting it out to the students before the school year ended. Four Juniors were trained with the various groups of Seniors in all phases of the publi- cation of the yearbook to gain valuable experi- ence which may benefit them in organizing and publishing their yearbook next year. All committees worked diligently to meet the many date lines and have sufficient funds to cover the publication costs which have in- creased considerably. The typing of the entire yearbook was under the capable hands of Florence Reedy who had chosen Shirley Young, Carole Ekas, Leona Pawloslci, and Janet Nykiel to assist her. This group worked every night after school to get the copy ready for the Press. The 1949 Tiger was under the direction of Mrs. Erma K. Briggs and Mr. John Barney. The Tiger Staff sincerely hopes you enjoy the yearbook of 1949 and wishes to thank all who have in any way contributed toward its publication.
