Referee signals TD for the Cowboys that put them on the scoreboard in the final seconds of the Matador game. The Cowboys held the state semi-finalists to a score of 20-7. 2. Kyle Todd and Johnny Payne stop the forward progress of the Matador Mata- dors. The 1973 football season had its ups and downs. The season opened with a lively contest with Claude. The Cowboys were outscored by the Mus- tangs 36-24, and junior halfback Johnny Payne suffered a shoulder sepa- ration that prevented him from playing the next two games. The Cow- boys seemed to hit their stride after a slow start by defeating New Home 73-0, and Whiteface 40-0. Junior quarterback Lonnie Tackitt sustained a serious back injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season in the Amherst game as the Cowboys yielded to the Bulldogs 23-13. 2. 1. The October 5 Homecoming Game was played on a soggy field, but the Cowboys treated the crowd to a 32-6 victory over the Nazareth Swifts. The Cowboys were defeated by Wilson 35-14 and in turn, defeated Lazbuddie 62-6, but they never seemed to regain their momentum and were overthrown by Matador 20-7, Sundown 20-0, and Meadow 40-7. Cowboy defense swarms the Matador ball-carrier. 16 The Cowboys had 3 players receive 1st Team All-District honors and several others were named to the 2nd Team. Those selected were Bobby Moudy, end - 1st Team Offense, lineman - 2nd Team Defense; Rockey Williams, center - 1st Team Offense, line- backer - 1st Team Defense; Greg Looney, back - 1st Team Offense, 2nd Team Defense; Andy Hand, tackle - 2nd Team Offense, lineman - 2nd Team Defense; Johnny Payne, back - Honorable Mention. Looney also received additional recognition when he was named to the All-State Team as an offensive running back. 6. 1. Ronnie Jackson and Lonnie Tackitt leave final pep rally. 2. The honored guests were Bi-District Boys Basket- ball Champs. Although rain made playing conditions less than favorable, the 1963 Cow- boys defeated the Nazareth Swifts 32-6. 22 1. 2. 1. Cowboys warm up before the Homecoming game. They defeated Nazareth 32-6 before a large crowd of ex-students. 2. Ex-student Sandy Morgan and Board Member Fay Hand enjoy the refreshments provided by the Ex-Students Association before the Homecoming Assembly. 3. Jana Wallace, Sr., was crowned Homecoming Queen at the after- noon program. Debbie McCarley, Jr., and Marilyn Venhaus, Sr., were named as attendants. The girls were escorted by Sr. Football Captains Tommy Tipps, Bobby Moudy, and Andy Hand. 4. The theme at this year’s Homecoming was ”1973 - The Year of the Cow- boys. The cheerleaders con- ducted a pep rally in the audito- rium following the Homecoming program. 5. Exes and guests were on hand for the Homecoming program and pep rally. 23 CouJxtys QdbGmk Wtgfi 1. Mark Peters, Soph., out jumps the Hart center. The 1974 boys’ basketball season ended with 18 wins and 8 losses. In district play, the team lost only to Spade. Four team members including Tim McNeill, Greg Looney, Lonnie Tackitt, and Johnny Payne were selected as members of the All District Team. Johnny Payne was named to the All South Plains Second Team and his teammate, Lonnie Tackitt, received Honorable Mention. 27 1. 1. They were: Tommy Tipps, intermediate hurdles; Greg Looney, 440, 6th - Regional; Andy Hand, shot; Tim McNeill, high hurdles, 5th - Regional. 1. The girls were coached bv Miss Connie Rich- ardson ana both qualified for the Regional Track Meet in the following areas: Connie Hand-shot, 1st District, 3rd Regional; discus, 3rd District. Pam Tatum - 80 yd. hurdles, 1st District, high jump, 2nd District. The volleyball team, coached by Mrs. Mallie Sheets, devoted a great deal of time and effort to preparation for the District Tournament. Several games were held with Whitharrel and Lazbuddie, and the team also competed in the Levelland Tournament. 34 2. The 1974 tennis team, coached by Mrs. Sherry Walker, had a busy season. Members of the team attended four tournaments during the season including the Plainview, Canyon, Amarillo, and District Tournaments. The varsity teams faced stiff compe- tition, meeting both the Regional and State champions in District play. Lisa Payne and Diane Johnson, freshman girls' doubles team, finished 2nd in District and also placed 2nd in the B division at the Plainview Tournament. Connie Hand played the part of Mrs. Hirshman in the play. 2. Viewing the remains of Esther Rubel (Mary Ann Sims) are Mr. Hirshman (Bobby Moudy) and the Caretaker (Zane Grubb). 3. Mrs. Bleeker (Gina Luker), Mrs. Lehr (Cathy Parker), and the young man (Tim McNeill) are saddened by the loss of Lena Grossman (Jini LaRoe). 39 NotixwoJl l-fcmyty Qo ety Ow ffeU oy Up The National Honor Society sponsored a door decorating contest this year that helped spark everyone's Christmas spirit. Officers this year were: Karen Hinton. President; Rhonda Fellers, Vice President; Tim McNeill, Secretary; Kyle Todd, Treasurer. The ten provisional members were inducted in a ceremony in the spring. 40 Pef QquuOuds BuMs QpVut Pep Squad took an active role in the building of the spirit of HHS under the leadership of the fol- lowing officers: Dana Cheek, President; Amy Wallace, Vice President; Becky McCarley, Sec- retary; Suzanne Watson, Trea- surer. A bus for members was taken to all out-of-town football games. Seniors who were mem- bers of Pep Squad made pillows for the Senior boys. Pillows were made by the Junior members for the Senior girls. Mrs. Moore again sponsored the group and was given an arrangement of flowers and a gift in apprecia- tion. 41 RA Gefe tmfolu L The Bennie Purnell FT A Chapter was once again very involved in district activities. Mary Ann Sims and Brenda Dietz served as district officers this year with Debbie McCarley being elected Financial Secretary at the November convention. The chapter received an award for Best Yearbook in district competition. At the State Convention. Mary Ann received a Distinguished Service Award. Chapter officers were: Mary Ann Sims, President: Brenda Dietz, Vice President; Debbie McCarley, Recording Secretary; Becky McCarley, Financial Secretary; Paula Heil, Parliamentarian; Suzanne Watson, Historian. 1. 42 1. Jini LaRoe and Mrs. Moore preside over festivities at the Sweetheart Banquet. 4. The seniors enjoy refreshments at the Senior Tea held during FHA week. 5. Cathy Parker serves punch at the annual Teacher Appreciation Tea, another project during FHA week. 6. Jini LaRoe, president, leads the chapter in the creed at the installation ceremony. 44 The highlight of the year for members of the Happy FHA was the installation of officers. Installation was incor- porated into the Ma-Pa-Me Supper. The annual Sweetheart Banquet was held February 16. The Little Sister Chapter hosted the member's fathers at Daddy Date Night. At the Area I meeting, Cathy Parker was elected as secretary-treasurer and the chapter received an award for participation in the Encounter program. At the state convention Jini LaRoe was installed as historian of the Texas Association. Officers of the chapter were: Jini LaRoe, President; Debbie McCarley, 1st V. Pres.; Cathy Parker, 2nd V. Pres.; Linda Railsback, 3rd V. Pres.; Estella Flores, 4th V. Pres.; Karen Hinton, 4th V. Pres.; Marilyn Venhaus, Song Leader; Megayla Thornton, Pianist; Dana Cheek, Secretary; Colette McCarley, Treasurer; Mary Ann Sims, Parliamentarian; Connie Hand, Historian; Susan SoRelle, President’s Aide. The group was sponsored by Mrs. Moore. The Happy Chapter of FFA topped off another good year with the Parent- Member Banquet. Members of the organization participated in Stock Shows and took an active interest in district and area projects. The group was sponsored by Mr. Lee Moore. The chapter officers were: President - Kyle Todd, Vice- President - Lonnie Tackitt, Secretary - Greg Looney, Treasurer - Ronnie Jackson, Parliamentarian - Tim McNeill, Reporter - Johnny Payne, Sentinel - Bobby Moudy, Chaplain - Alan Fowler. The Student Council sponsored Christmas Banquet brought the annual visit from Santa Claus. As its theme for the Sweetheart Banquet, the FHA chose, An Evening In Paris.
