871-fir? DEDICATION To most of you the first day spent in high school was like entering a strange, new, world. But as time went past you found yourself in the midst of the events that make up high school life. You soon were a part of that life. As a part of that life, this book is dedicated to you-- THE STUDENTS OF HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL -2- if fAh f 1 w f - ,J if Q, A ff Q i , , f , . .. . . AE :SY ' , FOREWORD In making this book we would like to bring you a complete record of the school activities for the year. But such a record is, in reality, impossible to accomplish. In the first place, space would not permit such a record. Endless pages of printed material would be required to give a complete account of the school events. In the second place, much of this material loses importance with the lapse of a few years. So we have tried to select the high lights of the year and to record them in an interesting manner. It is our hope that this book will prove to be of lasting interest and enjoyment to you. -THE STAFF- ..3- 'H' ui H an hi .L 'L .aff ' Af 4 pf, 3 gs, M -i ?, , ,,a9 Nr, x.., g I j Hills. .Q -..-'Z'-'Q 5 3 - yi -n f . kb V y1.,f,,,,,,w. .r-,ww N' 1 ' V v 'LiffK1ilyL2f'1 5 X l ' K . A-11 SUNSET On a bright, sunny, September morning in l9L6 beaming and energetic boys and girls entered the H. H. S. The surprised expressions on the faces of ty of the student body told us that we were to be freshmen of l9u6 and l9b7. One of the first tasks class undertook was to elect officers as follows: Bill Vlachg Vice President, Lois Jean Tholl3Secret thirty-two portals of the facul- the Wgreen' which the President, ary, Joanne Knuffkeg Treasurer, Shirley sedlacek. Our appointed Sponsor was Miss Capps. Two weeks after we started our schooling at Hanover High the customary initiation day had arrived. For this event the girls had to wear pajamas, hair on top of their head with a corn cob stuck in it,a whiskey bottle tied around their neck, and one high heel and one low heel shoe, The boys had to dress like girls. Ye were then taken down main street and then back up to school. That night, they gave us a party. Though we didn't like all of the tasks we had to do, we will remember that day as one of our best times in our school life We took part in the class tournament by oecorating with the usual freshmen colors--green and white. They are Mr. Steven McNally, president of the world airlines, and his very attrac tive and efficient private secretary, Miss Shirley Gerleve, soon to become hrs. Steven McNally. They are on one of their numerous business trips to their branch office in this city. Seeing Shirley get into a separate taxi we decide to follow her. Soon her taxi draws up to the U. S. Air Force Base and she goes to one of the very pretty little cottages on the edge of the base that are the living quarters for the offi- cers and their families. At the second cottage we see two very cute little girls playing in the sand. Shirley seems to know the house and then we see why. Coming out 'on the porch to greet her is the former Rosemary Crimmins, now the very beautiful and respected wife of the commanding officer, Orville Rettig. After lunch they decide to take in the town.while walk. ing down Hollywood and Vine who should come up the street with a blonde on one arm and a brunette on the othcr, but Bill adams, who they say has already sailed the Seven Seas and has a yirl in every port, but from the looks of it, he has two in this one. AS they go by the Brown Derby Club they stop to look at the featured entertainment for the week. To their surprise they read that Charles Grancer is the featured nan with Guy Lombardo's Orchestra fplaying the bass hornlg also having top billinc are the Bremen Coons quartet with Ivan Stohs as their star soloistg and Charlotte Ready, the star dancer of the Rockettes. We have read rumors in the gossip columns lately that there might be some connection with the two acts being featured consecutively at the same club. As we so farther down the street we see that a new lunch room has been opened. It is the Nwilson Coffee Shoppen and we soon find out that the head cook is Lois Jean wilson, the for- mer Lois Jean Johnson of Hanover. She is very nlad to see us and we soon take up talking over old times at Hanover High. From a letter that she received last week from one of her friends we find that the faculty for Hanover High School has just been sinned for the coming school year. Que Laue has been rehired for the third year as the coach. We hear that last year his boys won the state championship. lr. Webb, who was the coach in 1950 has been hired for the second year as coach of Baker University. we hear that they won the Kansas Conference Championship last year. horma Riemann has been hired as the Commerce Teacher and Bob hemitz, who just could not set over bookkeeping and pestering the teacher, has been hired as her assistant. Things are looking bright and rosy for the commerce department. This year there has been some- thing new added to the High School. They have started a school bus system and the driver is Liss LaVerna Ruhkamp. They say she should be pretty good. -18.. mmm. . ,, .,,. H:'fwW':T--'M' I iff L , if wa W The Lutheran Church finally has a steady minister. hr. Bob Jones has just graduated from Lidland College and has taken over the position of minister with his beloved friend Rod Kruse as his chief Hcook and housekeeper.H They just couldn't separate the two after they graduated from Hanover High in 1950. The head nurse of the now enlarged Hanover Clinic is Mary Ann Krempel, Dr, Roccaforte's new assistant is Doctor Joanne Knuffke who is taking her internship in the hanover Hospital. Sometimes she sings her patients to sleep. Hanover now has a three man police force since Bob nettig joined his dad as a rookie cop a couple of years ago. We hear that there isn't too much speeding going on anymore: that is when the police are active and have their eyes and ears open. Lois Jean also told us that Lois Jean Tholl who had gone with Johnny Habr all four years of high school?is new married. The first bright highlight of school activities was the Freshmen Initiation. We paraded the school and streets dressed as UHill Billysn from Dogpatch. We then settled down to the routine of daily studies. Ralph Williams left us at the first of the school term, and at the endof the year, Elmer Buss, Daniel Pacenka, Richard Tuhey, and Elvin Holle left our class. We were a little WHigher Upn in our school career as we started our Sophomore year. The tables were turned this year and we were the ones dishing out the Initiation Activities. After Darlene Nienaber and Carol Schierkolk had left our dhss at the first of the year and Edward Ludvicek left the last semester, we had a grand total of twenty-three Sophomores. As we advanced to our Junior year of high school our class took on a more serious attiuide toward school. All year we concributed our time and efforts fsome of theml to earning money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. We were quite successful in doing so. When May came, the Juniors were found locked in rooms, sneaking to the gym, and even being cool m the Seniors Why? The work on the Prom had started and the task of keeping our theme secret was quite a job indeed. Anyway, the evening came, and all was revealed. An enjoyable evening was had by most of the Juniors and Seniors. The rest of the school term was bearable by the thoughts of picnics and Wjust being out for awhile.n Following is the cast of the Junior Play--WRime and Rime Again.W Mrs. Henry Thomas--Dorothea Beecher Henry Thomas ------- Norman Lohse Freddie Thomas ----- James Vlach Betty Thomas ------- Velora Meyer Johnny Johnson ----- Don Wehling Georgia ------------ Arlene Doebele Bertie ------------- Wilma Cook Gus Smith ---------- Bob Prall Helena Duval ------- Carol Schierkolk Prominent Club Women--Vernita Nieman Gevene Shaffer Marillys Tuhey ..23..- .f12'1f1f .ffa. fff uv mul + ,J 1 4. , 3 Y -+ lf- 3 tr 1 . , .
