This book not only contains memories of the present 1984-85 school year but also reflects on the past years of Hanover Schools. The 1985 Revonah is dedicated to the people of the community of Hanover for their continuing support, hard work, and efforts in maintaining quality education in the Hanover Community School, a school of which we can all be proud. I would like to thank Terry Miller for the extensive history and photographs of the past and Mr. Stone for his undivided time in taking numerous pictures throughout the year. His time and quality work was greatly appreciated. A special thanks goes to Mr. Wayne Chandler for his photography and to Mr. Howard Dusek, our yearbook representative, for his ideas and advice. I would like to thank Clancy Sheridan, my co-editor, for the time he spent helping me to make this book a success. Diana Carson spent many thankless hours doing research and typing. Her efforts and hard work did not go unnoticed. I would like to thank Suzi Geiger, Nisey Griffin, Mary Gable, Penny Bourrette, Julie Ball, and Roxanne Cliff for the time they spent doing layouts and proofreading. They certainly made my work much easier. The remaining yearbook staff also deserves much credit for their work of selling ads. A special thank you goes to my mom and dad for all their support and patience throughout the production of the 1985 Revonah.. I would like to thank all the Hanover businesses with a special thank you to Eaton, the Hanover State Bank, and Whistling Wings for their financial assis- tance. Also, the 1985 Revonah would not have been possible without the financial help of the Hanover Booster Club. After looking through this book, I am sure they will feel that their contribution was well spent. Saving the most important person for last, I would like to thank Ms. Farral, our yearbook advisor, for all her long hours and hard work on the 1985 Revonah. Without her deep dedication, this book would not have been possi- ble. Again, thank you, Ms. Farral. As editor of the 1985 Revonah, I had the pleasure of seeing this book gradually turn into a yearbook of lasting memories. I hope you will find as much enjoyment in this book as I have found while putting it together. The proceeds have fi- nanced the school athletic program and many extracurricular activities such as the yearbook. The Booster Club has hosted many money- raising events this year. During Duckfest, mem- bers worked hard selling donuts and raffling off a watercolor of the Hanover bridge. Other raffles included tickets to a Chicago Bears football game, a White Sox game, and a Cubs game. Also, the Booster Club sold pizzas and hosted a pizza supper. The 1985 Revonah gives special recognition to the Red Devil Booster Club for supporting the athletic program and for providing much of the financing for this special edition of the last Re- vonah. To all Booster Club members, a very spe- cial thank you! ... Jh Action Chunk ou Booster Club . . . 2. Ken and Linda Mulholland make donuts. 3. ADMJfflSZKAZJOfl JACUZZI psnsomec Annette Barrash - Secretary Chris Dunham Jerry Callahan - President Larry Straight John Liberg Peg Otis School Hoard’s Message Sending off well-prepared graduates has long been a source of pride to the Hanover School and community. Because declining enrollment and decreases in revenues resulted in a reduced program, the Hanover School Board knew that to make further cuts in the educational pro- gram would mean graduating our students with less than an equal opportunity to compete beyond high school with others. To pursue consolidation was a choice with which we wrestled. There was no wish to end a long and proud traditionthat meant so much to Hanover. But when the time to decide arrived, our primary and man- dated responsibility of providing an excellent educational opportunity was the reason we chose to pursue consolidation with Elizabeth. Since the first of the year, the school boards, administrations, facul- ties and students of both districts have been working and planning together. There will be, as promised, greater academic and co-curricular opportunities for all students. Let us all cheer our new River Ridge School District. Annette Barash I Don Crawford Jn Special Kecognitm Mrs. Marilyn Eherhardt Mrs. Marilyn Eberhardt, affectionately know as Marilyn by the Hanover students and faculty, has been a beneficial member of the Hanover School system for 35 years, serving as office secretary and bookkeeper. As she retires, Marilyn has the distinc- tion of having the most years of service in Hanover School's history as well as the most years in educa- tional duties in the Illinois Northwest Region. For the hundreds of Hanover students, Marilyn has served many roles: nurse, counselor, lunch provid- er, truant officer, and helper. Over the years, as Marilyn's duties increased because of new state re- ports and various new aspects of education, Mari- lyn has easily adapted to all of the changes. Marilyn graduated from Hanover High School in 1948 and has been a lifetime resident of the Hanover community. Currently, she is a member of the Han- over Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Organization. Marilyn was also a past member of the Eastern Star, serving as the youngest Worthy Matron of the Crescent Falls (Hanover) Chapter. During her leisure time, Marilyn and her husband Richard enjoy playing bridge and travel- ing. The 1985 Revonah says a very special thank you to a very special lady, Mrs. Marilyn Eberhardt, for her 35 years of loyalty, dedication, service, and help- fulness to the Hanover School system. Mr. Bertram Murphy Mr. Bertram Murphy began his career in educa- tion at the Long Hollow country school in 1950. In 1952 he began teaching sixth grade at Hanover. Since then, Mr. Murphy has spent over half of his life dedicated to the Hanover School system. In 1953 he became the seventh grade teacher, and from 1955 until 1957, Mr.Murphy served as the eighth grade instructor. During the 1957-58 school term, Mr. Murphy taught high school social studies and served as acting principal. In 1968 he became Han- over's first principal. Later, Mr. Murphy also served as Athletic Director. In 1984 Mr. Murphy retired after serving 34 years as an educator. Mr. Murphy is married to the former Nora Bal- lein, and they have a daughter, Erin, and three sons, Michael, Sean and Kevin. Mr. Murphy has been very active in the community as a member of the Red Devil Booster Club and the Lion's Club. Also, he has been a member of the Illinois Principals' Association. For Mr. Murphy's love, pride, and loyalty for the Hanover School system and for his dedication to America's youth and their education, the 1985 Re- vonah says a special thank you to Mr. Bertram Murphy. Superintendent’s Message My congratulations to the class of 1985! Your class has contributed to Hanover High School and in turn you have received the foundation you need to succeed. As you leave this school, it is my hope that you will use the knowledge and skills you have gained to better those around you and yourself. The class of 1985 will be remembered for being the last class to graduate from HHS. It can also be remembered as the class that mad an impact on our society in a very posi- tive way. Be proud to be remembered as the last class and work toward being remembered for the difference you can make. To our underclassmen, look forward to the future and the opportunities that exist. Your education is your number one priority. It will shape your life forever. Begin today to set your goals for next year and the year beyond. You have one chance in your life to participate in a high school experience. Congratulations again and best of luck. I have enjoyed being a part of your education. Kent A. Hammer, Superintendent Principal’s Message I have enjoyed my year in the Hanover School system because I had the opportunity to touch the lives of 280 young people two would have been strangers otherwise. Someone once said, “Strangers are only friends who haven't met. 1 feel that statement best describes my year at Han- over. I am appreciative for the support of the faculty, staff, students, and the community during the course of the year. It has made my job a pleasant experience. I wish the best of luck to our 1985 graduating class as they now become a part of Red Devil history. May you meet the world with the same pride with which you represented your school. A special wish of good luck to the underclassmen who will now become a part of the new district. Your coopera- tion, enthusiasm and willingness to work together will be needed now more than ever. To all of you. Goodbye and Good Luck! 12 Norm Coatney, Principal Superintendents 1863-65 Ms. Hammond 1865- 66 J. M. Wallace 1866- 71 H. P. Caverly 1871-75 C. B. Young 1875-77 Charles Davis 1877-81 W. Saw him the other night at this roadside bar. I was walking in and he was walking out. We went back inside, sat down, had a few drinks, but all he kept talking about was Glory Days, well, they'll pass you by; Glory Days in the wink of a young girl's eye; Glory Days, Glory Days There's a girl that lives up the block Back in school she could turn all the boys' heads. Sometimes on a Friday I II stop by and have a few drinks after she puts her kids to bed. Her and her husband Bobby, well they split up. I guess it's been two years gone by now. We just sit around talking about the old times. She says when she feels like crying, she starts laughing thinking about Glory Days, well, they’ll pass you by; Glory Days in the wink of a young girl's eye; Glory Days, Glory Days Think I’m going down to the well tonight and I'm going to drink till I get my fill and I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it but 1 probably will. Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture a little of the glory of, but time slips away and leaves you with nothing, mister, but boring stories of Glory Days. The girls' and mixed choruses sang at the annual school Christmas program as well as participated in Organiza- tion Contest. The Swing Choir sang for Contest, the Christmas program, and Spring Band Concert. Band stu- dents had several parades, played at all home basketball games and for Organizations Contest. Individual mem- bers were involved in Solo and Ensemble Contest. These days of the 1984-85 school year are to be remem- bered for many last activities of Hanover organizations. We must not look back, however, but look forward to a new beginning of our new school district. Get involved in the organizations there! The first showing was October 1, 1983; the people of the area turned out in great numbers to enjoy the parade, flea market, duck calling contest, and vendors of all types which were strategi- cally placed all over main street. Hanover students participated by entering floats in the parade and by providing food stands and game booths. Throughout the day buttons were sold, prizes were given, and a band played contin- ually. The evening's activities included dancing and a sit-down dinner of Whistling Wings' Mallard Duck at Storybrook Coun- try Club. When the chips were in and counted, the town agreed that Duckfest should be a year- ly event and that Hanover be named the Mallard Duck Capital of the World. FIRE IN OUR EYES, £ % I C r £ IfMITVTN GUR y s Hanover High School Loyalty Day be- gan only as a day for students to be loyal to their school by displaying the school colors in a proud manner. During the ear- ly years at HHS, Loyalty Day was consid- ered a special event because of the big'' pep rally that was held on this day. As school spirit, pride, and loyalty grew, so did the celebration of Loyalty Day. Not only was there a spectacular pep rally, but also the entire week before Loyalty Day was spent preparing posters for the gym, decorating the halls of HHS, and filling the students with Devil Spirit . Over the years, students have enjoyed the spirit of Loyalty Day week which has always culminated in the Loyalty Day game and dance. HHS has both won and lost many of its Loyalty Day games. For the students and the community, each game has been exciting and memorable. Also, the Loyalty Day dance after the game has always topped the week’s ac- tivities. Whether the music has been played by a band or provided by a disc jockey, the students have always enjoyed themselves. 86 . . .
